Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: Cris Luna was born on January 27, 1925, in Ozuluama, Veracruz, México; he was the oldest of fourteen children; at an early age, he help his father do field work; he did not attend school during this time; at age sixteen, he studied with a private tutor, and was able to earn his elementary school certificate; at age nineteen, he joined the bracero program; he worked in Arizona doing railroad work.
Summary of Interview: Mr. Luna recalls growing up in Ozuluama, Veracruz, México, and working in agriculture; he states that he was unable to attend formal schooling during this time, and completed his elementary training at age sixteen through private tutoring; afterwards, he explains that he attended high school for a year, but was forced to return to field work for subsistence; at age nineteen, he remembers joining the bracero program to earn money and to create connections in the United States to continue his education; he describes the hiring process he went through, his trip to the border, and his time at the processing center; additionally, he recounts that they were not fumigated at the United States border; he worked in Arizona doing railroad work; furthermore, he details the harsh conditions he encountered in Arizona, the racist treatment he received from foremen, and his appeal to be transferred to different work; he expresses that after his contract was done, he returned to México, and decided to get legal papers to migrate to the United States; once in the U.S., he relates that he finished high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and later went to college in Illinois; he reflects on his time as a bracero with positive sentiment, but regrets some of the treatment he received in the camps.
