well, it was a long long time ago. So long i barely remember all the detail. ALL i remember is the pain and hardship that was caused to me and my brothers. It was not a time i wish to recount in any detail as it brings tears to my eyes and trembles that make my very soul shimmer.

I was born on January 23rd 1947 in Pomona California. As far back as I can remember my father was a Farm Labor Foreman. He had a 1947 red ford truck with a cabin in the back to transport the workers. Most of the time he would pick them up in Irwindale, California, but sometimes at the camp in Pomona or Upland California. As time went on he bought a 1956 Chevrolet truck and later a 1965 Chevrolet truck. Each time the cabin in the back got larger. My father would leave our house in San Dimas, Califorina at about 4:30 a.m. each morning, usually 7 days a week. My mother would gut up earlier to make him breakfast, and lunch which consisted of burritosn and were packed in a Thermos lunchbox. As kids my older brother and I would go with him on Saturdays and pick Oranges, Lemons, Tomatoes, Cucumbert, Peas, Grapefruit, or whatever was in season. Each Noverber we would go to Porterville, California, for the Orange season. This lasted until about 1965 when the program ended. I still have many pictures of my father in groves with the Braceros, and of his trucks.

My father, Refugio Villalobos Perez came to the US via the Bracero Program in 1955. He left five of my brothers/sisters and my mother in Santa Maria Transportina, Jalisco for the opportunity to get to 'El Norte' via the Bracero Program. Once established, my father broughy my brothers/sisters and mohter to the US. Three siblings were born in the US.
My father worked many diferent jobs to support his nine children. He ended up working in the SF laborers union until his retirement. He and my mother spend his retiremtn between his ranch in Mexico and his hom ein northern CA.
I am proud of my jefe and the sacrifices he made to make a better life for his famila.
Four of his children attended UC Berkeley and the other five children took on union trades/careers. His oldest daughter, born in Mexico, is a year away from obtaining her PHD. He is the proud grandfather of over 20 grandchilren and recnetly welomed great grand children to the familia. Several of his grandchildren are in college and a grandchild recently graduated from UC Berkeley.
My fathers favorite sayings are:

A couple of days ago I found out that my father had been part of the Bracero Program. He passed away when I was about four years old, so I would like to know about him. Hopefully I can find some sort of information here. His name was Manuel Lopez Hurtado he was from Jalisco and was probably about twenty years around the time. He was a cotton picker and worked mostly in Texas until his boss help him and some other men immigrate and he then moved to McFarland, CA. It would be nice to know a little about his life during this time since what my mom has told me is very little.

Actividad:
1. Divida la clase en grupos pequeños. En grupos pequeños, los estudiantes deberán discutir lo siguiente: ¿Qué es inmigración? ¿Qué noticias, comentarios o historias has leído o escuchado acerca de inmigración en los Estados Unidos? ¿Conoces a alguien que haya emigrado a Estados Unidos, ya sea recientemente o en el pasado?
Esta discusión está diseñada para incitar el diálogo entre los estudiantes y no deberá incluir cátedra. Además, cada estudiante deberá tener oportunidades similares y extensas para describir qué ha escuchado o aprendido acerca de inmigración fuera del contexto del aula.
Para extender esta discusión, considere hacer que los estudiantes creen un página de internet. 2. Haga que los estudiantes escriban enunciados cortos resumiendo sus conocimientos a cerca del tema de inmigración.
3. Presente a los estudiantes la historia del Programa Bracero usando la hoja de antecedentes aquí adjunta. Quizá usted quiera compartir el contenido oralmente o haga que los estudiantes lean el ensayo de manera individual.
4. Dividida la clase en grupos pequeños.
5. Entregue a cada grupo una de las fotografías aquí adjuntas, para ser analizada. Así mismo, entregue la Hoja de Análisis de las Fotografías del Bracero. Haga que llenen las primeras dos columnas (“evidencia” y “conclusión”) basándose en la fotografía entregada.
6. Después de que los grupos hayan llenado las primeras dos columnas de la Hoja de Análisis de las Fotografías del Bracero, haga que los estudiantes ingresen a internet y lean la información que describe a la fotografía.
7. Haga que los grupos comparen su “conclusión” con la que se encuentra en línea. Los estudiantes deberán comparar sus conclusiones (columna tres en la Hoja de Análisis de las Fotografías del Bracero) con la información prevista en el título y descripción de la fotografía que se encuentra en línea.
8. Haga que los estudiantes tomen notas con respecto a sus conclusiones, si éstas coinciden o no con lo que se encuentra en línea. ¿Son éstas las mismas? ¿Son diferentes? ¿Qué otra información se puede aprender de los títulos y descripciones de las fotografías que se encuentran en línea? Agreguen estas notas en la columna cuatro de la Hoja de Análisis de las Fotografías del Bracero.
9. Haga que todos los grupos antes formados se incorporen a la clase y comuniquen a sus compañeros acerca de lo que encontraron. Asegúrese de pedirles que comenten acerca de algo que hayan encontrado en las fotografías que los llevó a tomar esa conclusión.
Para ampliar esta actividad, considere hacer que los estudiantes asocien sus conocimientos a cerca del Programa Bracero con lo que anteriormente conocían sobre inmigración. Pida a los estudiantes que reflexionen acerca de cómo esto que acaban de aprender tiene efecto (cambia o afirma) en cuanto a lo que ellos anteriormente anotaron (paso 2).
