Summary of Interview: Mr. Hernández recalls that sometime during the late fifties or early sixties, he enlisted in the bracero program, and he went through a contracting center in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México; he comments that he went with one of his brothers-in-law, but they were separated during the x-ray portion of their processing; they did, however, meet up later while in the United States, and they picked cotton together; as a bracero, Dionisio labored in the fields of California and Texas until the program ended in 1964; he goes on to briefly recount the different worksites, housing, payment, treatment, and recreational activities; in addition, he describes working in Lamesa, Texas, and having to prepare his own meals, which was especially difficult, because he did not know anything about cooking; he also saw snow for the first time while in Texas; moreover, he explains that Hidalgo, Texas was the worst; there were about three hundred braceros there, and they were divided into smaller working groups; sometimes, they were not taken to the fields until 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM, at which point there was not much left to pick; eventually, by the early sixties, he had saved enough money to buy a car; he also explains that a group of braceros organized to demand better pay and appointed him their leader; in the end, they all backed out, but he refused to continue working for little pay, so he returned to México; he married in 1970, and a year later his wife had their first child; by 1972, he and his family moved to Manuel Doblado, Guanajuato, México, and settled there; his overall memories of the program are positive. Summary of Interview: Mr. de la Cruz briefly discusses his family and childhood; in 1954, the family moved to a place just outside of Empalme, Sonora, México, where he learned about the bracero program; he could not find work in México at the time, and he decided to enlist in the program; to begin the process, he went to Empalme to pick cotton and get a card and his name on the list of available workers; from there, he had to wait to be called, which could happen anywhere from ten days to one month; he describes waiting in line to be fumigated and the other medical procedures he underwent; his first contract took him to Holtville, California, where he worked in the beet fields for forty-five days; he then went to Palo Verde, Arizona, for three months, to pick onions and potatoes and load trucks, which was especially difficult; later, he returned to the beet fields, but this time in Burbank, California; he explains how he used the short hoe, and he stayed there for three months; in addition, he went to Suisun [City] Arizona, for a short time, and picked tomatoes; his last contract took him to Salinas, California, for one month, to pick strawberries; while there, he worked between ten and twelve hours a day; he would send money home to his parents and wife as often as he could; when he first started working in California, he earned 80¢ per day, but he had to pay $3.00 per day for food; in Arizona, he earned $1.25 per hour, and the work was easier; he goes on to describe his life after the bracero program ended; he eventually emigrated to the United States with his wife. Summary of Interview: Mr. Benítez vividly describes his family and childhood; in 1942, he learned about the bracero contracts and started exercising in order to build calluses on his hands, because he knew they would be checked; he details the medical exams he underwent and how he was bathed in a liquid he was unfamiliar with; shortly thereafter, he and other braceros were loaded on buses and taken to different cities throughout the United States; he was taken to Salinas, California, where he labored in the beet and lettuce fields, which he explains was very difficult; in addition, he talks about working for other ranchers on weekends and being paid in cash; he also went to Saint Louis, Missouri, but did not stay very long, because it was so cold; in 1950, he obtained a new contract, which took him to Nebraska, but he only stayed there for a few weeks; moreover, he mentions one incident where he fainted while working in the fields, but no one helped him; for a time, he was an undocumented worker, but he was later detained and eventually deported to México; years later, he went to school and began to research the bracero program; he was saddened to learn about the promises neither the Mexican nor American governments kept; finding out about the 10 percent that was taken from the braceros was especially disheartening for him. Summary of Interview: Sara’s father, Pedro Arrieta González, worked as a bracero; she vividly describes how poor she and her family were while she was growing up; there were times when they went days without eating, until her father was able to send them money from the United States; they were always happy to have him back home; prior to becoming a bracero, he made brooms; he repeatedly mentioned how fond he was of the United States, especially because it was so different; his first contract was in 1942, the year before Sara was born; she comments that virtually every time he returned home, he left her mom pregnant; he would frequently tell Sara about his different experiences in the United States, including an incident where he helped unload wounded soldiers from a train during World War II; while he was gone, which was often, his family also went through very difficult times; later, in 1967, Sara and her sister emigrated to the United States; after the bracero program ended, Pedro returned to México, and he continued making brooms; Sara also recalls that her father would come back home with boxes of clothes for the entire family; he would send money home by telegraph or by mail; in addition, he also told Sara about not being allowed into certain restaurants; consequently, neither Mexicans nor African Americans were permitted. Summary of Interview: Mr. Andrejal briefly describes his family; for a time he worked illegally in California, but his employer helped him become a bracero toward the end of 1958; he then completed an eighteen month contract; his boss wanted him to drive, but as a bracero he was not allowed to, so he was sent to Tijuana, Baja California, México, to arrange for legal residency; as a bracero, his primary responsibility was to feed and care for livestock; he initially returned to Empalme, Sonora, México, and he waited for fifteen days while he was sent money by his employer in the states on the condition that he return to work for the money he was given; in Mexicali, Baja California, he passed as a specialized worker; he was medically examined, and the next day he went to work; his employer had a list of workers’ names, which allowed men to pass much more quickly; while working illegally, he picked cotton, and he was treated horribly, including being severely underpaid; he goes on to describe the daily routines, duties, housing, provision, treatment, payments, remittances, friendships, and recreational activities; instead of writing letters home, he was fortunate enough to visit his wife in Mexicali, on a regular basis; he and other workers would often take turns leaving the camp in the evenings; later, he was able to establish residency for his wife; he goes on to detail the work he did after the program; overall, his memories of having been a bracero are positive, because he was able to work legally, become a legal resident, and ultimately a citizen. Summary of Interview: Mr. Álvarez talks about his family and childhood; in 1958, he paid to get his name on the list of eligible workers for the bracero program in Empalme, Sonora, México, but he was only cheated out of his money; later, in 1961, he paid again to get his name on the list, and five days later, he obtained a contract; consequently, he underwent rigorous medical exams while there; he comments that between the first and second time he went to Empalme, the city had grown tremendously, because thousands of people had to spend money while they were waiting there; as a bracero, he worked throughout California picking beets, cantaloupes, chiles, eggplants, and tomatoes; he goes on to detail the various worksites, duties, housing, provisions, recreational activities, and remittances; in addition, he explains how tremendously strenuous and painful it was to work in the beet fields, because he had to use the short hoe; even after a week of using it, he still found it difficult to sit, stand, or even eat; he repeatedly mentions that the heat was unbearable; in fact, many men left before fulfilling their contracts; furthermore, he states that in addition to the copious amounts of water, they were also given salt pills, because they would sweat so much; if they were able to survive the agonizing heat, they could renew their contracts without returning to México; he also describes working with his brother and cousin in 1962; after the program ended, he returned to México, and he continued working in agriculture; overall, having been a bracero proved to be a positive experience for him, because he was able to make a better life for himself and his family. Summary of Interview: Mr. Adame very briefly describes his family and childhood; he recalls going to Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, with his father and brother, to enlist as braceros; in order to be allowed into the contracting center, they had to pay, and even then they still had to stay there for a week, and sometimes even longer; they also had to spend money just to sleep on the floor of a hotel while they waited for a contract; once called, they were stripped and medically examined; from there they were transported by cargo train to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México, and then taken to El Paso, Texas, where they were assessed again and deloused; they were then transferred to Rio Vista, a processing center in Socorro, Texas, before finally being taken to their worksites; each time he was contracted he went through this entire process; as a bracero, he worked in the beet and cotton fields of Colorado, Montana, and Texas; he goes on to detail the various worksites, duties, living amenities, provisions, payment, treatment, recreational activities, and remittances; in addition, he mentions that he often worked for the same employer in Texas; moreover, he details the extreme difficulty of using the short hoe, for hours on end, when laboring in the beet fields; after the program ended, he worked in the United States illegally for a time, but he was ultimately able to gain citizenship; he concludes by stating that he is proud to have been a bracero, because he was able to help not only himself, but the United States as well. ML: ¿Dónde y cuándo nació usted? JG: Yo nací en el Municipio de Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco, México. ML: Y, ¿en qué año? JG: Mil novecientos treinta y uno. ML: Hábleme de su familia y el lugar donde nació. ¿Era una familia grande? JG: ¿Era qué? ML: Una familia grande o pequeña, su familia. JG: Pos sí, son bastantes. ML: ¿Cuántos? JG: Pos fuimos cinco hermanos y dos hermanas. ML: Y entre todos esos, ¿cuál era usted, el primero, el…? JG: El segundo. ML: El segundo. (risas) Y, ¿a qué se dedicaban sus padres? JG: Pues a la agricultura y ganadería. ML: Y, ¿usted fue a la escuela? JG: Pues me quedé en el segundo año nada más. ML: ¿Aprendió a leer y escribir? JG: Pues, no muy bien, pero un poquito. ML: ¿Cuántos años tenía cuando empezó a trabajar? JG: Yo tenía aproximadamente, todavía no cumplía los dieciocho años. ML: Y, ¿cuál fue su primer trabajo? JG: Bueno, de pequeño, al lado de mis padres, pos trabajamos en lo que se podía, la siembra, cuidar animales. Pero cuando ya llegué ya a la edad de los dieciocho años, me vine a Estados Unidos al estado de Texas. Estuve trabajando aproximadamente como seis meses ilegal. Después me contrató el patrón por seis meses, cumplí el contrato de seis meses y me renovó por otros seis meses, que fue un año completo. De ahí ya regresé a México, y regresé a Estados Unidos el [19]55. ML: ¿Fue como bracero? JG: En calidad de bracero. Yo me contraté en Chihuahua, México y de allí nos pasaron a El Paso, Texas, a La Asociación de El Paso, Texas y trabajé temporalmente en Pecos, Texas. El [19]56 me contraté en Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, pasando por Piedras Negras, Eagle Pass y de allí La Asociación nos mandó al condado de Big Spring, Texas. O sea con La Asociación de Big Spring, Texas, trabajé tres meses, después me renovaron por otros tres, fueron seis. Y así, temporalmente seguí contratado del [19]56 hasta el [19]59, cada que se terminaba mi contrato salía a Piedras Negras, Coahuila, México a pisar suelo mexicano. Y entraba en calidad especial recontratado otra vez hasta el [19]59. El [19]60 estuve en el condado de Jayton, Texas temporalmente. Regresé a México el [19]61, estuve en el condado de Plainview, Texas, temporalmente también. El [19]62 me contraté otra vez en Monterrey, Nuevo León, pasando por McAllen, Texas. Trabajé en el Valle de Río Grande y posteriormente nos mandaron al estado de Arkensó [Arkansas]. El [19]63 trabajé en Lamesa, Texas, que fue mi último contrato como, en calidad de bracero. ML: Usted tiene buena memoria, se acuerda de todo, lugares y en todos los años. ¿Cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero en México o en los Estados Unidos, cómo se enteró? JG: Bueno, porque desde, desde muy allá por pláticas, se decía que venían trabajadores en calidad de braceros, desde 1942, cuando la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Estaba yo chamaco, entonces, pero oía las pláticas y así jue pasando el tiempo y entonces ya pues traté también de venirme. Como le digo, traté de venir ilegalmente primero y así hasta que últimamente pos nos, nos quedamos en Estados Unidos, hasta la fecha, aquí estoy. ML: Y, ¿cómo le llamaban al Programa Bracero en México?, ¿le tenían otro nombre así al mismo programa? JG: Eh, contrataciones, se decía en México. Y ya cuando pasaba uno para de este lado, braceros. ML: Y, ¿dónde vivía usted en ese tiempo? JG: Vivía en San Antonio de Padua, Municipio de Valparaíso, estado de Zacatecas. ML: Y, ¿qué tipo de trabajo tenía usted allá? JG: ¿Tenía qué? ML: Tenía usted allá en México. JG: En México, bueno, este, allá vivía uno pobre, pero nunca, nunca le trabajamos a nadie nosotros. Nosotros trabajábamos en lo de nosotros, en la… Nos dedicábamos a la siembra y a los animales que teníamos, a… ML: ¿Estaba usted casado durante el tiempo que estuvo de bracero? JG: Sí, sí, sí estuve. El primer año, no, el [19]50 taba soltero. Yo me casé hasta el cincuenta y, hasta el [19]53. ML: Y, ¿tuvo hijos usted, mientras que usted trabajaba como bracero?, ¿iba y venía? JG: Sí, tengo, tengo siete hijos, cinco hijas, no, cuatro hijas y tres hijos. ML: Y, ¿todos nacieron durante ese tiempo?, ¿algunos nacieron durante ese tiempo que usted estaba de bracero? JG: No, por suer[te], por fortuna nacieron cuando yo estaba allá. (risas) ML: No, pero, ¿usted no iba a visitar y regresaba? JG: Sí, regresaba, sí. ML: ¿Alguna vez usted pensó en ir a los Estados Unidos cuando era menor? JG: Bueno, siempre, siempre tuve esos sueños de venirme a trabajar a los Estados Unidos y por último, pues se me concedió. ML: ¿Por qué decidió venirse la primera vez a los Estados Unidos? JG: Es, pos por la ilusión de prosperar, ¿verdá?, de pensando en el futuro. ML: ¿Cuáles eran? Déjeme decirle, mejor dicho, ¿influyó su familia de alguna forma su decisión?, ¿qué le decían en…? JG: Bueno, siempre yo me, me vine de acuerdo con mi familia, mi esposa, mis padres de soltero y de casado, pues… ML: Y, ¿qué decían? JG: Pos de acuerdo con mi esposa. ML: ¿Qué decía su esposa? JG: ¿Mande? ML: ¿Qué decía su esposa cuando se venía? JG: Bueno, pues que si era para el bien de la familia, que estaba bien. ML: Describa el proceso de contratación, ¿qué requisitos debía cumplir para ser bracero? JG: Pues se tenía uno que enlistar por Gobernación para venirse de bracero. El Estado le daba a uno una carta de Gobernación y una lista de varios compañeros, ¿verdá? Y llegaba uno al lugar donde, al centro de contratación, porque había tres centros de contratación. Uno era en Monterrey, Nuevo León, el otro era en Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, el otro era en Empalme, Sonora, México. Entonces de allí del estado de donde uno pertenecía o de donde uno vivía cuando lo enlistaban, daban el nombramiento a qué centro de contratación iba a ir, fuera al estado de Nuevo León o al estado de Chihuahua o a Empalme, Sonora. ML: ¿Hubo algún examen físico? JG: Siempre que pasaba uno, le hacían a uno examen físico, en primer lugar, pues, desde que se contrataba uno en su país de origen, o sea en el centro de contratación le pasaban a uno un examen físico y ya cuando pasaba uno para de este lado, ahí le sacaban rayos X, le sacaban a uno sangre, le hacían prueba de sangre y ya de ahí si todo salía bien, ya de ahí lo destinaban a donde iba a trabajar y si no, pos lo regresaban a México. ML: Y, ¿usted podía elegir dónde quería ir? JG: No, eso sí no, no se permitía, sino que hasta a donde lo mandaban tenía que uno que ir. ML: Y, ¿de qué forma viajó usted al lugar de reclutamiento, al centro de recepción en los Estados Unidos? JG: ¿En qué forma? Pues ya venía uno directamente de México con el… Cuando uno ya se contrataba allá, de allá lo mandaban directamente a la, al lugar donde se iba uno a contratar, por la frontera donde tenía uno que pasar. Porque eran cantidades, eran miles, eran miles de gente que venía a trabajar en calidad de braceros. Según, por la historia, pasaban 75,000 braceros por cada centro de contratación anualmente. ML: ¿Se le permitía a usted cuando pasaba traer algunos objetos personales? ¿Podía traerse objetos personales? JG: ¿De aquí para allá o de allá para acá? ML: Las dos cosas. JG: ¿Para acá? ML: Para acá. JG: No, pues nada más su, como se dice vulgarmente, su mochila de uno con una poca de ropa y nada más. ML: Y de allá para, ¿de aquí para allá? JG: De aquí para allá, bueno, pues llevaba uno lo dispensable, por ejemplo, pues ropa para la familia, ropa para uno y así, no cosas prohibidas, cosas electrónicas, por ejemplo, radios pues era lo que había entonces, puro, puro radio. ML: Y, ¿qué tipo de trabajo hacía usted cuando estaba en estos varios sitios? JG: Pues la agricultura, la agricultura, por ejemplo pisca de algodón, por lo regular, pisca de pepino y riegos, desahijar, limpiar la labor. Esos fueron los tipos de trabajo que yo hice. ML: Y, ¿cuántos braceros trabajaban con usted? JG: Este, pues en un campo en el condado de Plainview, habíamos sietecientos, sietecientos y pues un lugar pues malo, se puede decir porque no, no había suficiente trabajo para todos. Muchas de las veces le daban a uno nada más dos, tres días por semana nomás para pagar el borde y pues como para mí, fueron lugares mucho muy malos y entonces cuando había la oportunidad, yo siempre trataba de irme con rancheros que más bien no ocuparan más que uno o dos. A mí me gustó trabajar solo, yo trabajé con un, (risas) con un patrón tres años, yo solo nada más. Y este, en tiempo de la pisca de algodón, él contrataba ocho, nueve manos más y yo, yo era el que me encargaba de ellos, de pesador con la báscula, de pesar el algodón a todos ellos. ML: Y, ¿hizo algunas amistades duraderas con otros braceros? JG: ¿Mande? ML: ¿Hizo amistades duraderas con otros braceros? JG: Bueno, con mis compañeros de trabajo. ML: ¿Sí? JG: Y se terminaba el trabajo, lo regresaban para México y yo me quedaba, nomás yo me quedaba en el rancho. Yo quebraba la vara del algodón, disqueaba, bordeaba. Cuando se terminaba ya todo eso, manejando pues el tractor, cuando ya se terminaba, yo me regresaba a México por el mes de marzo. Y regresaba en el mes de junio a desahijar y a regar. En agosto se terminaba todo ese trabajo e iba a visitar a mi familia por un mes y regresaba en septiembre a piscar algodón, hasta diciembre se terminaba otra vez. ML: ¿Contrataron los patrones a algún ilegal que estuviera trabajando con usted? JG: No, no, nunca. ML: ¿Nunca? JG: Nunca. ML: ¿Alguna vez fueron las autoridades mexicanas a donde trabajaba? JG: ¿Autoridades mexicanas? ML: Sí. JG: No. ML: ¿En alguna ocasión fue La Migración a revisar documentación de los trabajadores? JG: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? JG: Sí. ML: ¿Cuándo y en dónde? JG: En el condado de Midland, Texas una vez y otra vez en Lamesa, Texas. ML: Y, ¿qué es lo que sucedía cuando entraba? JG: No, pos nomás les, nomás le pedían a uno sus documentos. Presentaba uno, le daban a uno una tarjetita o juera el contrato. Por ejemplo, cuando estuve en Lamesa, Texas, habíamos entregado el permiso, una tarjetita para renovarnos otro contrato, pero le quedaban a uno los contratos que era un paquete de hojas así por ejemplo como este, ¿verdá? Los presentaba uno y ya no decían nada, se iba La Migración. ML: Y, ¿usted tuvo mucho contacto con sus patrones? JG: ¿Con los patrones? Bueno este, únicamente, pues lo relacionado con el trabajo. ML: Y, ¿cómo se comunicaba con su familia en México, por carta, por teléfono? JG: Por carta, porque en ese tiempo donde, por donde yo, en el municipio donde yo vivía, pos no había teléfonos, pura carta. (risas) ML: Y, ¿visitaba a su familia mucho usted? JG: Pues sí, sí los visitaba como cada cinco, seis meses. O había veces que cuando ya se acababa el trabajo, me iba por un mes a mi casa, estaba un mes, mes y medio allá y me regresaba otra vez a trabajar. ML: Y allá, ¿iba y visitaba a su esposa y sus hijos? JG: ¿Mande? ML: ¿Visitaba a su esposa y sus hijos? JG: Pues naturalmente, pues a eso iba. (risas) ML: ¿Cuántos días a la semana trabajaba? JG: Los seis días de la semana. ML: ¿Cuántas horas por día? JG: Diez días, este, diez horas por día. ML: Describa el día normal, ¿a qué horas se levantaba? JG: Bueno, yo me levantaba a las seis de la mañana para empezar a trabajar a las siete, pero hubo una temporada de que trabajaba hasta trece horas diarias porque regaba y limpiaba la labor. Por ejemplo, entraba a las siete de la mañana, a las doce del medio día cambiaba el agua y me iba a comer, agarraba una hora para el lonche. A la una empezaba a trabajar otra vez, a las seis de la tarde cambiaba el agua y me iba a hacer mi cena y a descansar. A las doce de la noche me levantaba a cambiar el agua otra vez. ML: ¿Qué es lo que comía? JG: Bueno, pues… ML: Durante el almuerzo, el desayuno, la cena. JG: Pues arroz, frijoles, papas. ML: ¿Quién se lo hacía?, ¿usted hacía su…? JG: Yo, todo el tiempo me abordaba yo, yo solo. Cuando estaba solo, me gustaba estar solo, porque dormía uno pos bien y comía uno lo que quería. Porque donde estaba en compañías, donde había mucho, muchos braceros, como en el condado de Plainview, tenía uno que hacer, que hacer línea desde las tres de la mañana para venir almorzando a las cinco de la mañana. Y si no madrugaba uno a hacer línea, pos ahí se estaba hasta las ocho de la mañana haciendo línea. Entonces dormía uno bien poco por el ruido de tanta gente, porque había, le nombraban barracas, eran unos bildes [buildings] muy grandes y las camas estaban, pues empalmadas, unas sobre de otras y era un ruidazo, mucho, mucha molestia. ML: Y cuando comía ahí en las barracas, ¿qué es lo que le daban? JG: Pues tenían, tenían un comedor para darle comida a la gente, pero cuando ya se iba uno al trabajo, le daban a uno como una hamburguesa con papas, con huevos guisados y una soda para la hora del lonche. ML: Describa donde vivía, durante todo ese tiempo que estuvo de bracero, de seguro vivió en muchos sitios. JG: ¿Mi familia? ML: No, usted. ¿Cómo eran las situaciones de hospedaje en cada lugar? JG: Un no, pues este, cuando… ML: ¿Tenían muebles o camas todos los lugares? JG: Sí, cuando, como le digo, cuando trabajaba uno en compañías que había mucha gente y muchos trabajadores, este, eran barracas, eran unos bildes grandes, eran barracas y pos allí dormía toda, toda la gente. Ponían puras líneas de camas ahí, ahí dormía uno. Y cuando yo trabajaba solo con rancheros, el patrón me daba mi casita, ahí tenía yo mi cama, tenía mi estufa, tenía mi mesa y ahí arreglaba yo mi casa, la limpieza y todo. ML: Y, ¿habían baños con drenaje? JG: Este, no, no, tenían unos bañitos así como, como baños movibles allá afuera. ML: Y, ¿cómo hacía para lavar su ropa? JG: ¿Para lavar la ropa? ML: Sí. JG: Pues es triste, pero con un tallador en una tina, tallaba uno la ropa. (risas) ML: ¿Le proporcionaban sus patrones artículos de uso personal, como cepillo de dientes, jabón, toallas, rastrillo? JG: No, no, uno tenía que comprar todo lo que uno necesitaba. Pero con ese patrón que yo trabajé tres años, estuve muy a gusto con él porque eran muy amables, no, no eran discriminatorios ni él ni su familia. De lo contrario, me prestaban su lavadora para que yo lavara, para que yo lavara mi ropa, lo que en ningún otro lugar tuve ésa, ése, ¿cómo se dice?, ese privilegio, ¿verdá? ML: Y, ¿cuánto le pagaban en el trabajo de bracero? JG: A $0.50 centavos la hora. Por eso tenía que trabajar diez horas para ganarme $5 dólares por día. ML: Y, ¿cambió el pago dependiendo en qué lugar estuvo? JG: ¿Mande? ML: ¿Cambió el pago? JG: ¿El pago? ML: Sí, que le daban, el sueldo. JG: Oh, sí. Sí, onde, el último año que fue el [19]63, ese año sí me pagaron ya a $0.75 centavos la hora en Lamesa, Texas. ML: Y, ¿le pagaban con cheque o en efectivo? JG: Con cheque. ML: Y, ¿qué hacía usted con su dinero? JG: Bueno, lo mandaba a mi familia, a México. Cuando estuve del [19]56 al [19]69, mandaba cuando necesitaban en mi casa, le pedía yo dinero al patrón porque no me pagaba, le pedía yo dinero para mandar y me daba lo que yo le pedía y él mismo me lo ponía. ML: ¿Por qué no le pagaba? JG: Porque tenía confianza en él. Cuando ya me iba yo para México, él agarraba la lista del tiempo que tenía yo trabajando y me hacía un solo cheque. Me prestaba dinero para comer y luego me descontaba lo que me había prestado y él mismo me llevaba al banco a cambiar mi dinero. ML: Y, ¿a usted le gustaba esa situación? JG: Sí, él me llevaba al banco a cambiar mi dinero, encluso [incluso] me llegó a llevar hasta la frontera a agarrar el autobús, como dice uno ahora en México, el autobús, para irme para mi tierra. Sí, este, [es]tuve yo muy a gusto con ese hombre, le quedé muy agradecido porque fue muy legal conmigo y me pagaba pos, lo que estaba de acuerdo entre los dos gobiernos, lo que iba en el contrato, $0.50 centavos la hora. ML: ¿Alguna vez tuvo usted algún problema en sus trabajos? JG: No, ninguno. ML: ¿Qué sucedía en caso de un accidente o una enfermedad? JG: Bueno, pos lo llevaban a uno al doctor, pero por fortuna yo no tuve ningún acidente en ese tiempo. Es que pos taba yo muy joven, taba muy joven, creo que tenía buena salud porque nunca tuve que ir al médico. Hasta ahora de viejo, sí, seguido voy a ver al doctor. (risas) ML: ¿Cuáles eran las quejas más comunes? JG: ¿Las qué? ML: Las quejas más comunes. JG: No, pues… ML: Comida, hospedaje, patrones, salario. JG: No, pues no, no tuve yo ninguna, ninguna queja con nadie. ML: ¿Qué podía hacer usted si no le gustaba un trabajo? JG: Pues pedir cambio a La Asociación que quería cambio de… Pero no, por fortuna nunca, nunca pasó eso en mí. Siempre, parece que siempre les gustó mi modo de trabajar a los patrones que yo estuve, nunca, nunca tuve problemas. ML: ¿Encontró algún tipo de discriminación en sus trabajos? JG: Bueno, el único este, algo discriminatorio era de que, por ejemplo, en muchos lugares o estados, los patrones casi no, no permitían que se acercara uno mucho a su casa, así de la yarda para atrás, sí. ML: ¿Qué hacía usted en su día de descanso? JG: Pues el día de, mi día de descanso pues lo dedicaba a lavar mi ropa, (risas) sí, porque entre semana pos no había tiempo. ML: ¿Era libre usted de ir y venir de un lugar a otro como lo deseara? JG: No le oí. ML: ¿Era libre usted de ir y venir de un lugar a otro? JG: Ah, no, no, nada más cuando trabajaba uno así con rancheros, ellos mismos lo llevaban a uno al pueblo cada ocho días a agarrar uno su comida, llevaba uno su provisión para toda la semana. Cuando trabajaba uno en compañías, no, ellos llevaban todo, a uno le daban la comida ya hecha. Pero era muy, muy triste porque no, pues las comidas pues muy malas en otras palabras, ey. ML: Y, ¿qué hacía usted y sus compañeros para divertirse? JG: No, pues no, no había ninguna diversión porque se dedicaba uno a trabajar y… ML: ¿No practicaban deportes? JG: Y salía uno en la, ya tarde del trabajo y tener que ir a hacer uno su cena y a descansar, pos a dormir para estar listo otro día a temprana hora. ML: ¿Tenían radios? JG: Sí, sí teníamos un radio. ML: Y, ¿escuchaban estaciones en español?, ¿había estaciones en español? JG: Pues en ese tiempo había muy pocas estaciones en español, no escuchábamos más de, como el día de descanso, escuchábamos el español a las, de seis a siete de la mañana y en la tarde de cinco a seis de la tarde. ML: ¿Había una iglesia católica cercas de los lugares donde trabajaban?, ¿iban a la iglesia? JG: ¿Una, una, qué?, ¿a la iglesia? ML: Sí, los domingos. JG: El patrón con que trabajé el [19]56, el [19]57, [19]58, [19]59, ellos eran muy católicos, ellos me llevaban cada ocho días a misa. Ellos eran de origen alemán. ML: ¿Celebraban ustedes Semana Santa ahí en el campo? JG: No. ML: ¿Navidad? JG: No, no, pos de eso no. ML: ¿No? JG: Puro trabajar. ML: ¿Regresó usted a México cuando terminó su contrato final? JG: Sí, regresé a México. ML: ¿Cuántos años estuvo ahí? JG: Mire, yo le hago la cuenta que el tiempo que yo estuve contratado fueron ocho años. ML: Luego, después de eso estuvo en México, ¿cuántos años? JG: Pos ya cuando terminé mi último contrato, porque el [19]64 fueron los últimos braceros, pero yo nomás estuve hasta el [19]63 y de ahí vine aquí a California el [19]64, pero inlegal. Trabajé cinco, cinco meses y el servicio de migración me agarró y me mandaron para México otra vez. Me fui a mi casa y regresé otra vez inlegal el [19]66 y trabajé otro año de inlegal aquí y el [19]67 me volvió a agarrar otra vez el servicio de migración y me mandaron otra vez a México. ML: Y, ¿luego regresó de nuevo? JG: Sí. ML: ¿En qué año? JG: De ahí ya no, ya no regresé yo hasta el [19]70, que hasta la fecha aquí estoy. ML: ¿Arregló papeles? JG: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? JG: Actualmente yo soy ciudadano de los Estados Unidos, desde el [19]84 me hice yo ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. ML: Y, ¿trajo a sus hijos? JG: Mis hijos todos están aquí. Aquí en San José tengo dos hijas casadas, otra hija en Modesto y un hijo en Modesto también, otra hija en Mercedes, que ahorita en la actualidad ella es enfermera. Tengo un hijo, el mayor, no, el segundo, que entró al servicio militar el [19]76 y hasta la fecha todavía está dando servicio al Gobierno, orita está en Ajakistán [Afganistán]. ML: Y, ¿para usted qué significa el término bracero? JG: Bueno, pos este, fue una experiencia muy buena para mí, porque nunca le faltó nada a mi familia, siempre tuvimos todo lo, todo lo necesario. ML: ¿Cómo se siente usted de que lo llamen bracero? JG: Pues, pos bueno, no muy bien ni muy mal, así, entre comillas. ML: ¿El haber sido bracero cambió su vida de alguna manera? JG: Pues sí, sí, sí cambió porque como le digo, es que siempre vive uno más pobre en México, los pobres vivimos más pobres en México y aquí, pues bueno, hay que trabajar también duro, pero pos pobremente, pero siempre no está uno con los deseos de nada, siempre, siempre ta uno ganando para, pos para vivir más o menos. ML: Pues gracias. ¿Hay alguna cosa que quiere decir sobre su experiencia de ser bracero? JG: Bueno, pues por la experiencia de bracero, lo que quisiera agradecer a nuestro Gobierno Mexicano que ojalá y se cumpliera la promesa de, esa promesa que hay que nos van a regresar el diez por ciento que dicen que nos quitaban cuando anduvimos de braceros. Ojalá y se hiciera realidad. Eso es, eso es lo que, lo que puedo decir. ML: Gracias. ML: ¿Cuántos años tenía usted cuando empezó a trabajar? JB: Desde diez años. ML: ¿Cuál fue su primer trabajo? JB: Agricultura. ML: ¿Cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero? JB: Porque cuando reventó el volcán de Paricutín en Michoacán, entonces hubo contrataciones en Uruapan y entonces yo fui a ver si me contrataba y no me tocó suerte de contratarme, después me vine ansina sin papeles. ML: La primera vez que se vino fue sin papeles. JB: Sí. ML: ¿No fue como bracero? JB: No. ML: No, okay. ¿Cómo le llamaron al Programa Bracero en México cuando usted escuchó por primera vez? ¿Le llamaban Programa Bracero como aquí? JB: Igual, braceros. ML: Okay. ¿Dónde vivía usted en ese tiempo? JB: En Aguililla, Michoacán. ML: ¿Estaba usted casado cuando vino primero? JB: Sí, sí. ML: ¿Alguna vez llegó a pensar en trabajar en los Estados Unidos antes de aquella época? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Cuándo y por qué? JB: Porque yo, yo como no tuve escuela, yo de todos modos yo quería salir adelante, porque entonces allá el sueldo de los trabajadores allá en Aguililla era de $2 pesos de sol a sol y por eso yo me vine. ML: Y, ¿usted después de esa primera vez vino como bracero o se iba nomás así? JB: No, la mera, primera vez ilegal, te digo. Y entré por Tijuana, trabajé cuarenta días piscando ejote a $0.50 centavos la hora. A los cuarenta días me echaron para fuera y después me contraté en Mexicali y me tocó trabajar un día a un lado de Los Ángeles, pero ya fue a finales de la pisca de naranja. Y ya ahí se acabó la pisca de la naranja, entonces de ahí nos cambiaron a Riverside a un campo de braceros, pero resulta que no había nada de trabajo, estuvimos como un mes sin trabajar nada, sin sueldo, nomás comiendo. Y el que era vicioso salía a la calle a buscar pachichas para hacer cigarro para poder fumar, porque no teníamos ni un centavo. ML: Y, ¿cómo es que usted sobrevivió durante ese tiempo? JB: (risas) Bueno… ML: Con el dinero. JB: Enseguida no, enseguida, de todos modos allá mi familia, pos éramos familia grande. Allá, ellos, allá sostienen a mi familia allá a mis, mi papá, mis hermanos. Ya después se, ese año tocó que heló mucho y nos sacaron a trabajar por horas, a $0.75 centavos la hora ahí en Riverside a tumbar la naranja que estaba helada. Y ya después ya seguimos ya piscando naranja, pero pues muy barato, no hacíamos dinero nada, allá pa malvivir. Y el borde a veces estaba pésimo, pero a veces algunos compañeros iban a poner la queja al Cónsul de San Bernandino y el cónsul avisaba qué día iba a venir para que ellos previnieran buena comida y entonces ya. Entonces el cónsul, el cónsul nos decía, ¿no?, pos que la comida estaba muy sabrosa, que no tenía nada de malo y, pero siempre lo hacían ansina los que entendían con el comedor. Era una señora texana que cuando había oportunidad de comprar carne barata, se compraba riñones o pollo ya muy pasado o pescado también ya. A veces los pescados ya con unos clavos negros y eso nos daban de comer porque era muy barato eso y ellos aprovechaban lo barato pa darnos. ML: A ver dénos un segundo. (entrevista interrumpida) ML: La primera vez que se vino, antes de venir como bracero, ¿cuál eran sus expectativas del Programa Bracero? JB: Pues tener algún dinero pa poder trabajar allá en mi tierra. Pero que pues nunca lo pude lograr porque nos pagan muy barato. Después en 1955 sí, entonces ya de ahí nos daba, nos daban a todos, ¿veá? El que salía buen trabajador, nos daban una mica y al salir nos las recogían y ya cuando regresamos nos daban otra nueva y la última, la última que me dieron ya fue pues cuando ya se acabaron los braceros en 1964 y es la que tengo. ML: Y la primera vez que usted vino como bracero, ¿en qué año fue eso? JB: Mil novecientos cuarenta y nueve. ML: Cuarenta y nueve. Describa el proceso de contratación. ¿Cómo fue ese proceso de contratación? Usted dijo que fue a la Ciudad de México, ¿verdad? JB: No, tocó que hubo contrataciones en Mexicali y yo andaba ahí en Mexicali pos en la lucha de poderme pasar para acá o contratarme. Me tocó contratarme y de ese modo pasé ya contratado y ya así ya duré años contratado. Podíamos, con un contrato podíamos durar dieciocho meses, cada seis meses nos podían reformar el contrato, pero a los dieciocho meses tenía uno que salir por juerza a pisar tierra mexicana y de ahí si queríamos volver, volvíamos y ya nos daban uno la mica como especiales, como buen trabajador y ya. MA: Y, ¿qué requisitos debían cumplir para ser braceros? ¿Tenían requisitos para los braceros? JB: Pues, como la gente que éramos del rancho, pues nos miraban que éramos del rancho, nos miraban las manos, si tenían callos, pos luego luego pasamos, si no teníamos callos, no pasábamos, como el que era panadero. ML: Y, ¿necesitaron algunos documentos para ser braceros? JB: Sí, necesitabamos acta de nacimiento. ML: Y, ¿qué otras cosas?, ¿sólo la acta? JB: Nomás. ML: ¿Nomás? Así que, ¿usted fue y se registró con sus manos y su acta? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Hubo algún examen físico? JB: Sí, en El Centro. Ahí nos pasaban y tenían un aparato para sacarnos una radiografía de aquí del pecho y nos sacaban sangre a todos, una, sí, una ampolleta de sangre a todos pa ver si estábamos malos de la sangre. A mí me tocó suerte que nunca salí malo de la sangre. ML: Y, ¿qué le dijeron las autoridades ya sean mexicanas o norteamericanas que podía esperar de su trabajo? ¿Le explicaron algo del trabajo que iba a ir a hacer usted, antes de llegar a los Estados Unidos? JB: No. ML: ¿No? JB: No. ML: ¿Le informaron ellas algo acerca de su salario, condiciones de vida, alimento o transportación? JB: Sí, allá en Empalme, Sonora cuando nos contratábamos, pos ya ahí nos daban luego luego un lonche y tocaba, nos echaban en unos autobuses que veníamos como sardinas, sin clima, nada o si nos echaban en un tren, entonces era un tren carguero. En el tren había unos furgones con bancas de madera para sentarnos ahí y de ese modo veníamos. Y en cuestión de los encargados de los braceros, pos siempre llevamos la de perder, porque si no teníamos dinero, no podíamos ir a enlistarnos y los que tenían dinero llegaban a las vías del tren, pos había algún coyote que hacía una lista de cien o doscientos con, pagando. Entonces pasaban primero y los que iban, venían en lista de gobernaciones, nos llevaban pa el último que no pagábamos nada y ansina era la contratación. ML: ¿Así era? ¿Dónde cruzó usted la frontera las varias veces que vino? JB: Por Tijuana y Mexicali. ML: Siempre por Tijuana. Decriba físicamente el centro de recepción. ¿Cómo era el centro donde llegaba? JB: Ese, ahí había como para dormir ahí y era onde nos hacían el examen del pulmón y de la sangre, pero no durábamos, siempre llegábamos y enseguida, luego luego nos mandaban a nosotros a los lugares que le tocaban a uno. ML: ¿Qué tuvo que obtener, qué tuvo que hacer para obtener su permiso de trabajo? ¿Necesitaba enseñar que tenía inmunizaciones o necesitaba otros papeles médicos, más de lo que le hacían? JB: No. ML: ¿Tuvo alguna opción para escoger entre el tipo de trabajo durante el tiempo de empleo? JB: No. ML: O sea salario. JB: No, no, no. ML: ¿No? ¿Tuvo usted algo que decir acerca de donde llegaba? JB: No. ML: O sea podía elegir, no podía elegir si se iba a Texas o California. JB: No, cuando eran las contrataciones ahí en Empalme, siempre eran aquí a California o Arizona. De aquí, ya con las que se contrataban era pa Texas, las contrataciones eran allá en aquel lado, allá por León o no sé dónde, yo nunca me contraté por allá. ML: ¿Se permitía tener con usted algunos objetos personales cuando se iba como bracero, dejaban que pasara con cosas? JB: ¡Ah!, otra cosa que se nos estaba pasando, de que si llevaba uno mucha ropa, tenía uno, a la salida tenía uno que pagar que porque llevaba mucha ropa, tenía uno que pagar un dinero ahí. Si llevaba una televisión, ahí de salida otra vuelta comprada, con lo que tenía que pagar. Pero yo nunca llevé ni una, le salía comprarla con lo que tenía uno que pagar y muchos ahí mejor las dejaban ahí las cosas y allá en Sonorita, pos ahí tenían una bodega de todas las cosas que habían recogido de los braceros. ML: ¿Qué sucedía después de que usted terminaba el proceso y recibía su permiso de trabajo? Ya cuando le daban la identificación, ¿qué es lo que sucedía exactamente? JB: Cuando ya, como por ejemplo cuando llegaba uno de México de contratado, que no, pos nomás… Bueno, si nos tocaba a la naranja, nos daban el saco y las tijeras pa ir a la naranja. Si era por ejemplo, si era desahije de lechuga y betabel, ahí nos daban el azadón, que nos daban el azadón cortito porque después hubo, hubo problema con eso, con la aseguranza, porque todos nos enfermamos del riñón por trabajar con ese azadón cortito. Después lo quitaron, no sé ahora cómo desahijarán o plantarán mata por mata, no sé ahora. Yo ya, ya no me ha tocado trabajar en eso. ML: ¿En cuántos lugares diferentes trabajó usted como bracero? JB: En Riverside, en Fullerton, y en San Luis Rey. Ahí en San Luis Rey con unos japoneses. ML: Y se acuerda… JB: Era, era, el nombre de ellos era Yasukochi Corporation, japoneses. ML: Y, ¿se acuerda en qué año fue eso? JB: En el [19]55, con los japoneses en el [19]55. ML: En el [19]55. Y, ¿cómo lo trataban los japoneses? JB: No, no en el [19]56. Pues bien, más o menos, pero sólo los fines de, los fines de semana había una hija de ellos, se llamaba María, y los fines de semana le llevaban a ella una cuadrilla para que ella dirigiera esa cuadrilla y lo que hacía de andar, decía: “Hurry up, señor. Ándele, ándele más”. Pos ya a mí nunca me gustó que me anduvieran así arreando, yo siempre iba adelante. ML: Y, ¿notó diferencia en el trato que le daban los japoneses con los otros, en comparación a los otros dueños de las otras fincas donde trabajaba? JB: Sí, sí. ML: Y, ¿qué era la diferencia? JB: Pues, nomás nos trataban mejor. ML: ¿Los japoneses? JB: Sí. Ya cuando yo me hice ya de conociencia con ellos, primero pos yo les caí mal, pero a poquito yo, pos no sé y después me daban a mí a veces hasta unos cinco, seis trabajadores pa que yo juera a hacer algún trabajo. Y como ellos, como llega el invierno que no tenían trabajo, me daban preferencia hasta ir a limpiar la casa de ellos, para que ahí de todos modos yo ganara, después ya eran muy buenos ya. ML: Y, ¿qué tipo de trabajo hacía con los japoneses? JB: Como era verdura, ellos sembraban lechuga, como unas tres clases de lechuga, sembraban camote, sembraban chile, chile mexicano y chile california y chile de ese güerito, pues nomás. ML: ¿Como cuántos braceros trabajaban con usted? JB: Eran como unos treinta y cinco, cuarenta. Era un campo chiquito, pero después la compañía de braceros pos le interesó mejor hacer un campo grande para reunir de todos los braceros que había en los rancheros ahí en ese vallecito de San Luis Rey, hizo un campo grande pa reunir, reunirnos todos allá y cobrarnos el borde ya por la compañía de Asociación de Braceros. ML: Hábleme de los otros braceros que trabajaban ahí. ¿Hizo usted algunas amistades duraderas? JB: No. ML: ¿No? ¿Contrataron los patrones algún ilegal que estuviera ahí trabajando con usted? JB: Si, si contrataban algún ilegal ahí donde yo trabajaba, les quitaban los braceros. ML: Así que en ningún lugar donde usted trabajó tenían trabajadores ilegales. JB: No. ML: ¿No? Con los otros patrones de las otras fincas donde usted trabajó, ¿tenía mucho contacto con ellos como con los japoneses? JB: No. ML: ¿No? JB: No. ML: ¿No hablaba usted con ellos nunca? JB: No, no. ML: Y en las otras fincas, ¿cómo lo trataban? JB: Pues bien, sí. Yo hasta eso que no, no me quejo yo mucho. A veces, como en algunos trabajos, los que nos trataban mal eran los mayordomos. Por ejemplo, en la lechuga allá en, me tocó trabajar un tiempecito allá en Arizona y esos, mayordomos allá, pues eran muy exigentes. ML: ¿Alguna vez fueron autoridades mexicanas al lugar donde trabajaba usted? JB: Nunca. ML: ¿Nunca? ¿En alguna ocasión fue La Migración a revisar la documentación de los trabajadores? JB: Una vez sí andaba allá en, allá pa Blythe piscando algodón, jue una temporadita de cuatro meses y sí, una vez jue La Migración ahí a revisarnos ahí, pero sólo encontraron uno que no tenía papeles, todos teníamos papeles. ML: Y hábleme de su familia que se quedó en México, ¿cómo se comunicaban? JB: Todo por carta. ML: Y en ese tiempo, ¿cuántos hijos tenía usted?, o, ¿tenía hijos? JB: Tres. ML: ¿Tres? JB: Tres. ML: Y, ¿todos estaban en México? JB: Sí. ML: Y, ¿dónde vivía su esposa? JB: En Aguililla. ML: En Aguililla, y hablaban a veces por teléfono o usted iba a verla, yo supongo. JB: No había teléfono en Aguililla. (risas) No, solamente por cartas. En ese entonces había muy buen servicio de correo, lo que ahora ya no hay. Ora dura como quince días una carta pa llegar, no sé por qué. Entonces llegaba una carta a los cuatro días y entonces me costaba la estampilla de, por aérea me costaba $0.05 centavos y hasta con una estampilla de a $0.03 podía yo mandar cartas allá, lo que ahora vale a como a treinta y tantos centavos. ML: Y, ¿usted le mandaba dinero, inclusive, en las cartas? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? JB: Todo por carta. ML: Y, ¿cuánto dinero le mandaba usted? ¿De vez en cuando le mandaba dinero o seguido le mandaba? JB: Sí, yo le mandaba de $100 dólares, sí. ML: Y, ¿cómo se sentía su esposa que usted se fuera de bracero? JB: A ella les daba gusto, allá me platica una hija, que ella era la que iba a recibir el dinero allá, le daba mucho gusto porque entonces valía $12.50 el dólar y que andaba, lo cambiaba los $100 dólares y ella miraba pues bastante dinero, ey. ML: Vamos a hablar un poquito de su rutina diaria y condiciones de vida. ¿Cuántos días a la semana trabajaba cuando era bracero más o menos? JB: Los seis días. ML: ¿Seis días? ¿Qué hacía en su día libre? JB: ¿Qué, qué hacía yo? ML: En su día libre. JB: Pues dormir. ML: ¿Sí? JB: Tomar así pa descansar. Los demás muchachos que estaban pues, que estaban entrenándose a jugar al futbol, jugaban futbol. Pos yo nomás me ponía a mirarlos, algunos se ponían nomás a jugar baraja allí, todo el día hasta en la noche. ML: Y, ¿cuántas horas por día trabajaba normalmente? JB: Siempre eran unas ocho horas o menos, a veces que era un pedido chico de naranja y terminábamos pronto el pedido y pos trabajábamos unas cuatro, cinco horas a veces. ML: Describa el día normal de trabajo. JB: ¿Eh? ML: ¿Cómo era su día normal de trabajo? ¿A qué horas se levantaba? JB: Nos levantaban a oscura la mañana todavía, sonaba, sonaban un fierro ahí pa que nos levantáramos a ir a desayunar y uno mismo a hacer el lonche allá en el comedor, para llevar su lonche para comer allá al medio día. ML: Y, ¿qué es lo que comían? JB: Carne, sí. Siempre el mayordomo hacía su, hacía la lumbre y nos echaba un pitido en el troque pa que nos fuéramos todos a comer, calentar las tortillas, el lonche. ML: ¿Tenían que pagar por la comida? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Le pagaban al mayordomo o a quién? JB: No, a las, había una… Nos rebajaban el pago, nos rebajaban lo del lonche porque el lonche era por la compañía. ML: Y, ¿su cena? ¿Dónde cenaba? JB: Allí. ML: ¿Ahí también? JB: Sí. ML: Y, ¿le rebajaban también por la cena o no? JB: Sí, todo. ML: Y, ¿dónde vivía? JB: En el campo. ML: ¿En el campo? JB: Pos sí, el campo de braceros pues, por la compañía. ML: Y, ¿los cuartos tenían mesas o sillas o camas? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Qué tenían? JB: Camas. ML: ¿Camas? ¿Solamente camas? JB: Camas y mesas, pues no, mesas había en el comedor, sí. ML: Y, ¿habían baños con drenaje? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? Y, ¿cómo hacía para lavar su ropa? JB: Pos había modo, nos tenían un modo de a uno mismo lavar la ropa. Si quería uno, si no la mandaba a lavar, pero con lo que ganábamos, pos si nos poníamos a pagar por mandar lavar, no quedaba nada. (risas) ML: Y, ¿le proporcionaba su patrón artículos personales como cepillo de dientes, jabón, toallas, rastrillos? ¿Cómo conseguía esas cosas? JB: Compraba uno. ML: ¿En dónde? JB: Iba uno a la tienda, se compraba lo que necesitaba uno de eso. ML: Y, ¿cuánto le pagaban? JB: Depende. Si era, si trabajábamos por contrato como en la pisca de naranja, pues depende, lo que haiga uno hecho de cajas, pero si era por hora, era $0.75 centavos la hora. ML: Y, ¿le pagaban en efectivo o con cheque? JB: Allá en Riverside me pagaban en efectivo, sí. ML: Y, ¿cada cuánto le pagaban? ¿Cada semana? JB: Cada semana. ML: ¿Qué hacía usted con su dinero? Ya que se lo daban en efectivo, ¿cómo lo guardaba? JB: Pos lo guardaba en el veliz, sí. ML: Y, ¿no habían robos? JB: Robos no, hasta eso que no. ML: ¿Todos los braceros guardaban su dinero así? JB: Pues, pero poquito, ¿eh? Nunca tenía uno así bastante dinero que diga uno: “No, no me lo vayan a robar”. (risas) Sí, poquito y ya juntaba uno algo ahí, pues lo mandaba uno pa su casa. ML: ¿Todos los braceros ganaban igual? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? JB: Bueno, por hora sí. Pero por contrato, el que le entraba a trabajar más, más recio, pues ganaba más. ML: ¿Alguna vez usted tuvo problema para recibir su pago, su sueldo? JB: No. ML: ¿Ninguna vez? ¿Siempre recibió usted el pago correcto por las horas trabajadas? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Alguna vez le descontaron dinero de su salario? JB: No. ML: Vamos a hablar un poquito de problemas del trabajo. ¿Alguna vez usted tuvo un problema con su mayordomo, con el dueño? JB: No. ML: ¿Nunca? JB: No. ML: ¿Qué sucedía en caso de un accidente o una enfermedad? JB: Pues nos llevaban al doctor, pero yo no ocupé. ML: Y, ¿cuáles eran las quejas más comunes entre los braceros? JB: El de la comida. ML: ¿Por qué? JB: Porque como te digo, a veces que daban de las comidas, pues de la carne, si era carnes, ya más pasadas, que ya tenían más tiempo en la tienda y que no se vendían, eso era, pero yo de todos modos, yo no, yo no nunca me quejé de eso. Otros sí se quejaron, como te digo, le decían al Cónsul de San Bernardino y el cónsul avisaba qué día iba a ir pa que los de la cocina hicieran buena comida y taparlos, ¿verdá? “No, pues la comida está muy buena, mira nomás”. ML: ¿Qué podían hacer si no les gustaba algo del trabajo? ¿Tenían dónde quejarse o no?, o, ¿con quién quejarse? JB: Pues con el cónsul, pero a mí no me tocó nunca. ML: ¿Encontró usted algún tipo de discriminación en el trabajo? JB: No. ML: ¿Alguna vez usted o alguno de sus compañeros de trabajo organizó una protesta laboral o algo de ese tipo? JB: No. ML: ¿No? Vamos a hablar un poco ya de sus pasatiempos. ¿Era libre de ir y venir de un lugar a otro como usted deseara cuando estaba trabajando como bracero? JB: Pues a lo lejos necesitaba permiso. Por ejemplo, un vez estaba yo allá trabajando en Blythe y ya se iba a acabar el trabajo y nos iban a echar para México. Entonces yo vine a Riverside, como yo acá yo había estado trabajando, ya tenía conociencia acá con el manejador de los braceros y vine a Riverside. Entonces era un jefe, un capitán del Ejército el que se entendía con los braceros y yo a él ya me conocí, vine yo acá a Riverside a decirle que si me podía dar el cambio. Entonces él me dio una tarjeta. Entonces le dije yo que quería traerme a unos compañeros conmigo y me dijo que los podía traer con esa tarjeta y yo me traje seis compañeros conmigo de allá de Blythe a Riverside. ML: Y, ¿qué hacía usted con sus compañeros para divertirse? Usted dijo que a veces practicaban deportes, ¿no? JB: Sí, los que sí sabían de deporte, jugaban pues deporte y los que les gustaba la baraja, pos se ponían a la baraja o los dados. Y yo mirando nomás, yo me llegué a calar también a la baraja, pero no tenía suerte, nunca ganaba nada. (risas) Era mejor así, así ya no, nunca me enseñé a jugar. ML: ¿Alguna vez ustedes iban al pueblo a ver películas o…? JB: Sí, pos ahí Riverside solamente había, necesitábamos de alguien que tuviera carro para ir a San Bernardino, sólo allá había cine mexicano, en San Bernardino. ML: Y, ¿tenían radios ustedes? JB: ¿Uh? ML: ¿Tenían radios ahí en su dormitorio? JB: Sí, sí. ML: ¿Habían estaciones de radio que tocaran música en español? JB: Pos nomás en Los Ángeles había una, pero de ahí de Riverside agarrábamos bien de Tijuana y de Mexicali, esas sí agarrábamos bien. ML: Y, ¿iban ustedes a veces a la iglesia católica o no? JB: Ahí en Riverside, ahí en Riverside nos dejaban una barraca para que juera el padre allá a decirnos misa, pero no sé quién o cómo estuvo; yo figuro que sería algo otra, de otra religión que la prendió, la quemó. ML: ¿En qué año fue esto? JB: ¿Eh? ML: ¿En qué año fue esto que prendieron la barraca? JB: En el [19]54, en el [19]55. ML: Y después de eso, ¿ya no tenían misa ahí? JB: No. ML: ¿No? ¿Alguna vez fue usted a vacacionar a México a visitar su familia? JB: Sí, y siempre en el invierno. Si quería ir, me daban un permiso por un mes, un mes iba y venía. ML: Iba y venía. ¿Ustedes celebraban cosas como Semana Santa, hacían algún tipo de celebraciones en los campos? JB: Aquí no. ML: ¿No? JB: No, no nada. ML: ¿Regresó usted a México cuando terminó su contrato ya el ultimo año? JB: Sí. ML: ¿Sí? ¿Le facilitó su patrón transporte para regresar a México? JB: No, pos ya, cuando uno ya termina el contrato…Es que yo me quedé, me quedé en Mexicali esa vez para ver si podía arreglar para pasar otra vuelta pa acá y en eso me acabé el dinero y después me tocó que trabajara en la autopista de Tijuana a Ensenada para sacar el pasaje pa irme pa México. Después regresé, pero ilegal ya, aquí regresé aquí a Redwood City. ML: ¿Alguna vez usted renunció su trabajo como bracero y regresó así cuando ya estaba trabajando como bracero en el campo? JB: No. ML: ¿No? JB: No. ML: ¿Cuándo es que usted regresó a los Estados Unidos como ilegal? JB: En [19]79. ML: En [19]79. Y, ¿cuántos años estuvo aquí? ¿Vino acá a California o a dónde fue? JB: No, aquí a California. ML: Y, ¿se trajo su familia con usted? JB: No. ML: ¿No? JB: No, pues si no ganaba uno pa mantenerse uno, apenas. No, yo me vine y me tocó trabajar en, el primero que llegué tenía una hermana aquí en Redwood City, llegué a casa de ella ahí pues, por un mes ya no le faltaba nada ahí, tenía onde dormir y comida. Pos luego agarré un trabajo en la tienda esa de Goodwill, agarré trabajo allí, ahí trabajé un tiempo. Y luego ya de ahí hubo chanza de agarrar otro trabajo allá en Woodside, allá en el, limpiando los establos de los caballos y dándoles comida a los caballos. Ahí trabajé yo unos seis años, pero eso sí, sin fallar ni un día, duré como cinco años sin fallar ni un día era 4 de Julio o era 25 de Diciembre, yo de todos modos trabajé cinco años sin fallar ni un día. Y hasta que ya vino entonces, ya hubo la amnistía. Entonces ya arreglé y ya, ya cuando arreglé, entonces ya. Entonces apliqué al Seguro Social hasta los sesenta y ocho años y ya ahorita estoy con el seguro nomás, pos ya no trabajo. ML: Y, ¿en qué año aplicó para la amnistía?, ¿se acuerda? JB: No me acuerdo en qué año. ML: Y, ¿usted en su familia tuvo otros hermanos que fueron braceros? JB: Un hermano, pero él trabajó nomás cuatro meses nomás de bracero. ML: ¿Ningún otro hermano? JB: Y ya él después en el [19]63, cuando se acabaron los braceros, entonces les tocó arreglar y ya ahora sí, hace poco que se hizo ciudadano. ML: Y en su pueblo había… JB: Tiene tres hijas aquí trabajando ya legal, legalmente ya, porque él les arregló ya. ML: Y, ¿sus hijos están en México? JB: Nomás una hija tengo en México. Otra hija aquí está en San José y el otro hijo en Redwood City. ML: Y, ¿para usted qué significa el término bracero? En sí la palabra bracero. JB: Sí. ML: ¿Tiene algún significado para usted? JB: Mucho mira, porque nosotros, se puede nombrar así mira, que nosotros los braceros fuimos los que abrimos el camino. Cuando vino el bracero, ya supimos en qué partes había trabajo y entonces abrimos el camino pa que los demás ya después vinieran. A los ilegales, ya sabían a dónde venir, ónde podían agarrar trabajo. Después, antes de que se acabaran los braceros, se venía mucha gente de allá de Aguililla pues aquí a San José y a Redwood City, se llenó Redwood City, pos de hecho a Redwood City le dicen Aguililla Chiquito. Negocios y todo y trabajadores ahí en Redwood City, está lleno de gente de Aguililla. ML: Y, ¿había muchos de Aguililla que vinieron de braceros? JB: No, no muchos, ey. Siempre los de, venían de por acá de otros lados, de Jalisco o de Michoacán, pero de acá de este lado, ahí como Aguililla es de los últimos pueblos que hay allá, se necesita pasar todo Michoacán pa llegar allá a Aguililla y Coalcomn son los que están allá en la orilla ya. Ya de este lado de Aguililla está Apatzingán, más acá está Uruapan, Zamora, Morelia pos es la capital. Sí, tiene muchas ciudades Michoacán. Es muy bonito Michoacán. ML: ¿Sí? Y, ¿cómo se siente usted cuando le llaman bracero, cuando le dicen a usted bracero? JB: Mira primero, primero sentía uno como ofensa, pos no sabíamos nada, ¿verdá?, que bracero y luego nos, a veces la gente se reía de nosotros y mayormente que la gente de aquí, que porque los braceros nos sentíamos inferiores que la gente de aquí, que bracero, que quién sabe cuánto. Pero ahora me siento orgulloso. Yo siento orgulloso de haber sido bracero. Oye si quieres si te traigo un contrato, tengo un contrato de braceros. ML: Para hacerle fotocopia. JB: Ey, pa que, pa que escribas tú ya… El licenciado ese que nos ha ayudado a nosotros acá los, como los de José, a eso lo de la licencia y todo, no sé como se llama uno que tiene cabeza así, calvito. Ese también me pidió un contrato, le di un contrato, quería estudiarlo. Y luego unas señoras también que nos ayudábamos mucho en años pasados, porque yo ya tengo tres años con José y había una señora que nos ayudaba mucho también, también una de ellas hablaba muy bien español y inglés y me pidió un contrato, también le di un contrato. Y ya, hasta eso, ya ni las he visto, ese año pasado que vine, ya no las he visto. He mirado, he mirado otras, que nos han estado ayudando, pero a ellas ya no, como que se enfadaron o no sé. ML: Y en general, ¿sus recuerdos de haber trabajado como bracero son positivos o negativos? JB: No, positivos. Sí, tengo ganas de ir a Riverside, tengo ganas de ir a San Luis Rey, pero pa eso se necesita que haiga, yo ahorita ya no tengo carro, necesitaba que alguna gente tuviera por ahí un tiempo para ir allá. Ahí no, ya no, ya no está igual como estaba antes. Antes yo trabajé también un tiempo en Parlier. Ahora he pasado por Parlier, ahí ya no conozco, porque ya, antes había una gasolinera allí y ahora ya se extendió mucho, está muy grande todo, todo ha crecido mucho. Antes, cuando yo estaba en los primeros años que contratado en Riverside, nomás se oía mentar el freeway Santa Ana, ahora se trata de puros freeways por onde quiera. Antes podía, podía uno cruzar la 101, la 99, sin haber puente, porque no había tráfico, fácil cruzaba uno, ahora ya no. Si, si trata uno de cruzar la 101 o la 5, o cualquier, cualquier freeway de esos, si quiere uno pasarlo sin, sin puente no pasa, yo creo ni en la noche a como hay de tráfico y antes no había tráfico. La 99, y me acuerdo ya de cualquier carreterilla nomás de dos líneas, una para allá y otra para acá. Ahora hasta de tres o cuatro líneas. ML: El haber sido bracero, ¿cambió su vida de alguna manera? JB: Pos sí, porque algo me, me civilicé tantito. Porque pos ya te digo, que yo no tuve escuela. Ahí me enseñé a hacer letras, acá yo, cuando estaba yo acá en Riverside, le daba duro y pues yo, yo sé poner mi nombre, pero no, no tuve escuela, nada. ML: Y, ¿cómo lo trataban los méxico americanos en los pueblos a donde iba a trabajar? JB: Bien, bien. Pos yo no me andaba revolviendo, mira algo, otros de mis compañeros, por ejemplo, cuando estábamos en Riverside se iban pa dar la vuelta allá a donde hay, pues cantinas y borracheras allá a San Bernardino y de ahí venían todos con los ojos morados, todos golpeados, allá que los golpeaban. Entonces eran, no, entonces no eran cholos, eran pachucos. Los pachucos los golpeaban pa allá, pa andar… ML: Y, ¿por qué los golpeaban? JB: Pues por ahí en las cantinas allá, a veces que de la nada y ya los borrachos ya pelean. O si andaban de enamorados, pos también, con más razón. (risas) ML: Pues muchas gracias. JB: De nada. Summary of Interview: Mr. Báez briefly describes his family and childhood; later, he worked in the United States illegally for a short time before returning to México through Mexicali, Baja California, and obtaining a bracero contract in 1949; he goes on to explain the requirements, including how their hands were checked, physical exams, x-rays, and blood samples; consequently, he underwent similar procedures when going through the contracting center in Empalme, Sonora; he also talks about transportation from the centers to the border by bus and train; as a bracero he worked in Arizona and California; he also details the various worksites, daily routines, housing, amenities, provisions, working relationships, payments, deductions, remittances, and recreational activities; moreover, he explains the difference between contract and hourly pay; he also describes contract renewals and how every eighteen months, braceros had to return to México; at one of the camps the cook would often buy chicken, fish, and meat, that was cheap, because it was old; when the workers complained to the Mexican consul, they would announce their visit and the food would be different, which nullified the grievance; in 1979, he returned to the United States as an undocumented worker; he later applied for amnesty and arranged for legal residency; overall he has positive memories of the bracero program, and he comments on how it changed his life for the better.
