Title A name given to the resource Vidal Tafoya Subject The topic of the resource bracero Description An account of the resource Vidal Tafoya was born April 28, 1948, on a ranch in Tarengo, [Jalisco] México; his parents were campesinos, and he had six siblings; he was formally educated through the third grade; by the time he was eleven years old, he was already working in the fields; later, when he was eighteen, he enlisted in the bracero program; he completed one contract in California picking tomatoes; eventually, he married and had six children; during the late 1960s, he immigrated to the United States with his family. Summary of Interview: Mr. Tafoya briefly talks about his family and what his life was like growing up in México; he recalls that a great flood ruined all the crops, which led to government officials giving out cards to enlist in the bracero program on several ejidos; he went to Empalme, Sonora, México, where he encountered difficulties, because he had not completed his military service; eventually, he was able to pass through to the center in Mexicali, Baja California, México, where he was examined and fumigated; he was then transported by bus to the San Joaquin Valley Association where ranchers chose the workers they wanted; as a bracero, he completed one contract in California picking tomatoes; he goes on to detail housing, accommodations, provisions, duties, routines, treatment, payment, deductions, remittances and recreational activities, including trips into town; at the camp, he had to work in fields that had already been picked, which did not allow him to earn very much; soon after, he followed the older men there and walked out on strike; he describes the events and difficulties that ensued and how he was transferred to a new camp; after his contract ended, he returned to México and continued working in the fields with his father; eventually, he married and had six children; during the late 1960s, he immigrated to the United States; although he felt that as a bracero, he was viewed as less by the locals, the program still afforded him the opportunity to work and provide a better life for his wife and children. AS: Podemos empezar con su niñez, entonces, ¿dónde y cuándo nació usted? JA: Nací el mes 12, 14 del [19]41. [14 de diciembre de 1941] AS: Y hábleme de su familia y del lugar donde nació. JA: En Buenavista, Chinantla, Puebla. AS: Y, ¿a qué se dedicaban sus padres? JA: Este, trabajar en el campo, en el campo, sembrar maíz, cacahuates, ajonjolí, nomás puro de temporal nomás. AS: Y, ¿viene usted de una familia grande? JA: Sí. AS: ¿Cuántos hermanos y hermanas? JA: Cinco hermanos, siete. AS: Y, ¿ellos dónde están ahora? JA: Aquí están, allá solamente está uno en México, en México. AS: Y hábleme de cuando fue a la escuela, ¿fue usted a la escuela de pequeño? JA: Sí. AS: ¿Dónde y por cuántos años? JA: Hasta el segundo año nomás. AS: Y, ¿aprendió usted a leer y a escribir? JA: Sí, pues poco, no mucho. AS: Bueno y, ¿cuántos años tenía cuando empezó a trabajar? JA: ¿Allá en el campo? AS: Sí, sí. JA: Ya grande, como de unos trece años, por ahí así, catorce años. AS: Y, ¿me puede contar de su primer trabajo? JA: ¿De allá de mi tierra? AS: Oh, sí, sí, de cuando empezó a trabajar por primera vez. JA: Pos a sembrar maíz, trabajar con la yunta y… AS: Y, ¿cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero? JA: Porque allá, pos se oía, se oía por radio que iba a haber braceros, pues. Y entonces ya, de allá nosotros nos venimos al estado de Puebla, porque allá era donde se contrataba uno. AS: Y, ¿dónde vivía usted en ese tiempo? JA: En Buena Vista, Chinantla, Puebla. AS: Y, ¿qué tipo de trabajo tenía? JA: ¿En la casa? AS: Sí, antes de que se fue para ser bracero. JA: Sembramos maíz, cacahuate, ajonjolí, frijol. AS: Y, ¿estaba ya casado? JA: Soltero. AS: ¿Soltero? JA: Soltero. AS: ¿Cuántos años tenía? JA: Como trece años cuando ya comenzamos a trabajar, de trece, catorce años. AS: Y, ¿cuándo decidió contratarse para ser un bracero? JA: Eso ya de veinte años, veintiuno. AS: Y, ¿todavía estaba soltero? JA: Soltero, sí. AS: Y, ¿por qué decidió ir a los Estados Unidos? JA: Pues por, a veces por necesidad, ¿verdad? Porque allá sí, si no llueve, este, no hay cosecha. A veces cuando no llueve no ha levantado uno casi nada y por eso es nuestra necesidad de venir para acá. AS: ¿Influyó su familia de alguna forma en su decisión? JA: No, ¿como de qué? AS: Para venirse a los Estados Unidos o, ¿fue su decisión solamente? JA: No, por, pos permiso de mi papá porque entonces todavía vivía mi papá, mi mamá también. AS: ¿Puede describir el proceso de contratación? JA: ¿A dónde yo trabajé aquí en Estados Unidos? AS: Más como, desde cuando decidió aplicar para ser un bracero y el proceso que tuvo que ir para coger su permiso y para llegar a la frontera y escoger su trabajo, ¿cómo fue todo eso? JA: Es que cuando, de allá de Puebla cuando salimos, este, la lista decía: “Se van de aquí hasta Empalme, Sonora”. Y ahí era donde nos contratábamos nosotros, porque si llegaba uno, al otro día nos contratábamos y ya de ahí, al otro día nos mandaban pa acá pa la frontera. Y ya de ahí nos sacaban sangre, nos revisaban todo, si veníamos bueno y sanos. Y ya ahí sí ya, este, esperando nada más el patrón que cuántos necesitaba, cincuenta o sesenta hombres. Y ahí son de, pues nosotros veníamos a trabajar, pues cualquier patrón que venía. Pues a veces aunque nos engañaban, decían: “Se van a ir a cortar higo”. Pero no, cuando veníamos a cortar tomate era puro tomate. AS: Y, ¿qué requisitos debían cumplir para ser braceros? JA: Nos daban, nos pedían que tuviéramos cartilla, una cartilla de preferencia para que nosotros cruzáramos para acá. Y era, lo único que teníamos era una cartilla, porque los que no tenían cartilla no habían dado servicio al… Porque ahí marchaba uno de dieciocho años y con eso nosotros teníamos el permiso pues, nos daban el permiso pa venirnos para acá, con la cartilla. AS: Y, ¿qué tenían que hacer para demostrar que reunían esos requisitos? JA: Pues ellos, primero nos veían que si de veras sabíamos trabajar, nos ponían como quinientas hojas, meterlas en una bolsa y ahí nos veían que si éramos de trabajo o no. Y ahí comenzábamos a meterlas de cuantas hojas, dice: “¿Cuántas hojas van a ir metiendo por cada, por cada bolsita?”. Porque esas bolsas nos ocupábamos, las ocupábamos nosotros para el lonche y todo, ajá. Y teníamos, es como le digo, teníamos que estar bueno y sanos para trabajar y luego hacer el lonche también en el trabajo. Y si no salíamos, ellos veían que si uno sale, uno enfermo, nos regresaban para atrás. Todo aquél que no, no, estaba bueno y sano, lo regresaban para atrás. Nos ponía una máquina aquí por delante y se revisaba que si [es]taba uno bueno de los pulmones y todo. Y todo, pues gracias a Dios nosotros salíamos bien y… Pero otros, había otros paisanos que de ahí los regresaban para atrás. Nos chispaba unas jeringotas de sangre y algunos como no aguantaban, se caiban [caían], pero como había mucha sangre les metían de la misma sangre. AS: Y, ¿dónde y cuándo se enlistó en el programa? JA: El, jue el, primeramente la primera vez entramos, entré por Ciudad Juárez, creo que fue en Texas. ¿Nunca le oirá llamar a un lugar que le decían Harlingen, Texas? Ahí fue la primera vez que entramos a cortar algodón. AS: Y, ¿cómo fue el viaje para llegar a la frontera y para llegar a Texas? JA: Pues pagábamos nosotros de allá de México, nos veníamos pagando nuestro transporte, nomás que ya como del, como de, por ejemplo de Sonora para acá, Empalme, ya veníamos por parte de ellos, según ellos decían. AS: Y, ¿venían en bus? JA: Autobús. AS: ¿Autobús? JA: Y ya de Empalme pa acá, nos subían a veces en el tren, en el tren carguero, hasta la frontera. AS: Y, ¿tuvo usted algo que decir acerca del lugar donde lo mandaron a trabajar? JA: Sí. Y la segunda vez, eso jue, la primera vez fue en Texas. La segunda fue aquí por California en, el lugar se llamaba Gilroy, fue el [19]64. Y el [19]65, ése ya fue en Hollister, California a cortar tomate, chícharo, frijol. Como las máquinas nomás lo arrancaba e iban poniendo, así por fila, el frijol y ya los trabajadores tenía uno que ir agarrando y aventándole en la banda así. AS: Y, ¿se le permitía tener con usted algunos objetos personales? JA: ¿Cómo, qué? AS: Fotos, entre usted y su familia, libros o su propia plata, ropa. JA: No, pues lo que ganábamos, pues era una cosa que, si trabajábamos en el tomate nos pagaban a $0.14 centavos la caja de tomate. Entonces para ganar $14 dólares teníamos que hacer cien cajas de tomate. Pero no las hacíamos, apenas llegábamos a setenta, ochenta cajas, pues no nos ganábamos ni $14 dólares. Y lo que ganábamos, pues les mandábamos a nuestros padres, lo poquillo. AS: ¿Entonces le pagaban en cheque o en efectivo? JA: En efectivo. AS: Y, ¿cada cuándo le pagaban? JA: Cuando yo hacía, ochocientas sesenta cajas me daban $84 dólares, en quince días porque pagaban por quincena. AS: Y, ¿cómo enviaba su dinero a su familia? JA: Por carta certificada. AS: Y, ¿cómo se comunicabas con sus padres? JA: Por carta nomás. AS: ¿Por carta? JA: Por carta. AS: Y, ¿los visitaba entre el tiempo que estaba trabajando? JA: Sí, sí, pos este, en el tiempo que se nos terminaba, por ejemplo el permiso, ¿verdad? Salíamos y volvíamos a entrar. AS: ¿Cuántas veces regresó a los Estados Unidos, trabajo del contrato? JA: Serían como unas dos, tres veces por ahí. AS: ¿Tres veces? JA: Pero de ahí sí después, pues casi nos quedamos aquí, ya no volvimos para allá. AS: Entonces, ¿cuántos años trabajó usted oficialmente como bracero? JA: Como unos, como bracero, como unos tres años. AS: ¿Tres años? Y, ¿en cuántos lugares diferentes trabajó? JA: En, ya le dije, en Gilroy estuvimos ahí y en Hollister, California, y en Texas. AS: Y, ¿cómo llegó ahí desde el centro de recepción de braceros? JA: Pos tráibamos listas nosotros del estado de Puebla, ¿verdad? Para, nos decían qué lugar teníamos que estar y nos veníamos en autobús. AS: Y, ¿el patrón pagaba por eso? JA: No, de Empalme para acá, según ellos pagaban $18 dólares para, este, pues casi no nos pagaban todo, sino que nomás daban casi una ayuda nomás. AS: Y, ¿cómo era el viaje? JA: Para allá, lo que nos costaban $260 pesos mexicanos. AS: Y, ¿cuántos braceros trabajaban junto con usted? JA: Como sesenta braceros. AS: Y, ¿todos los que trabajaron eran braceros o habían unos locales o unos ilegales? JA: Puro bracero. AS: ¿Puro? JA: Ey. AS: Y, ¿como cuánto te comunicabas con los locales? JA: No, pues casi no porque hubo un tiempo que sí nos daban, hasta fuimos, íbamos en las tiendas y nomás de que nos veían a nosotros se enojaban con nosotros porque dicen que ellos no trabajan más, que ellos les trabajaban, los americanos solamente por $5 dólares la hora y nosotros vinimos a trabajar por $0.14 centavos la caja de tomate. Pero pues nosotros veníamos contratados. AS: ¿Entonces las relaciones entre los locales y los braceros…? JA: No, no nos aceptaban ellos, se enojaban. AS: Y, ¿en alguna ocasión La Migra o las autoridades mexicanas fueron a donde usted estaba? JA: No, al contrario si nos encontraban en el camino nomás nos preguntaban el lugar donde vivíamos y nos llevaban hasta el campo. AS: Y, ¿encontró algún tipo de discriminación? JA: Pues solamente con los patrones porque ellos, trabajando nos, que no nos querían ver que nos enderezáramos, que todo el tiempo agachado, agachado. Porque entonces se usaba azadón chiquito y por ser el mismo azadón, no como ora son grandotes hasta del mango. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez tuvo algún problema en el trabajo? JA: Me enfermé. AS: Y, ¿qué sucedió? JA: Me pegó un dolor en el pecho y tuvieron ellos que llevarme al doctor. AS: ¿El mayordomo te llevó? JA: El mayordomo. Eso jue en Gilroy, no en Hollister, California. AS: Y, ¿ellos cuidaban de los braceros cuando se enfermaban? JA: Sí. AS: ¿Entonces no era problema? JA: Ellos nos llevaban. Nomás nos reportábamos que estamos enfermos y ellos nomás iban a dejar a los demás compañeros al trabajo y ya iban por nosotros a llevarnos al doctor. AS: Y, ¿cómo te trababan como el mayordomo, el patrón? JA: Pues ellos nos trataban bien, ¿verdad? Como el mayordomo, el único que jueron los cocineros, los cocineros, el patrón nomás o el mayordomo decía: “Y vete en la cocina que te den una cuchara para que tomes tu medecina”. Íbamos: “¿Nos pueden dar una cucharita?”. “No”, dicen. No nos hacían caso. Y en la tarde venía el patrón y sí, ya entonces, nos acusábamos con él, le decíamos: “Patrón, aquí no nos, no nos quieren ni siquiera prestar una cucharita para tomar nuestra medecina”. Y él entraba y les decía: “Si ya no quieren trabajar ustedes, por eso les estamos pagando”, decía el patrón, “si ya no quieren trabajar”, dice, “váyanse y podemos poner otro”. Ellos preferían más, tenían unos perros, creo que les daban más de comer más a los perros que nosotros. AS: ¿Qué tipo de comida les daban? JA: Pos a veces hacían como guisadito de res, papita, taquitos de papita así frita. AS: Y, ¿era suficiente la comida? JA: Pos no, pos nos daban, en la mañana nos daban desayuno, café pues, con leche y un panecito. Y ya como a las nueve de la mañana ya nos daban comida. AS: Y, ¿ustedes tenían que pagar por la comida? JA: Sí, nos cobraban, nos cobraban $26 dólares por quincena. AS: Y, ¿cómo le sacaban la plata, de su salario? JA: Nos los descontaban, ey. AS: Y, ¿siempre recibió el pago correcto? JA: Sí, sí de lo que trabajamos sí, ¿verdad? Pero pos ni nos dábamos cuenta, nos pagaban pues nomás lo que ellos, pues querían porque a veces nos engañaban que: “Vamos a ir a trabajar por horas”, onde era por contrato. AS: ¿Cuál era mejor para ganar más plata, en contrato o por hora? JA: Pues yo creo que por contrato, porque el que se hacía, por ejemplo, cien cajas, se ganaría $14 dólares y por horas no. Porque la hora, lo mínimo, lo que pagaban entonces era $1.05 la hora. AS: Y, ¿cuántos días a la semana trabajaban? JA: De lunes hasta sábado. AS: Y, ¿cuántas horas cada día? JA: Casi como las ocho horas, las ocho, sí. De seis hasta como las tres de la tarde. AS: Okay. Entonces un día típico sería levantarse como a la… JA: A las cinco de la mañana, a las cuatro ya teníamos que estar listos. AS: Y, ¿les daban tiempo de descanso al mediodía para el almuerzo? JA: Brei [break], el brei [break] nomás, pos es una media hora nomás. AS: Y, ¿qué hacía en su día libre? JA: Descansar, nomás los domingos era día de descanso. AS: Y, ¿se quedaba en el campo o se iba? JA: En el campo, en el campo. AS: ¿De vez en cuando se iban al pueblo? JA: De vez en cuando, porque entonces no teníamos la libertad más de irse por donde quiera. Como ahí, como nosotros como estamos contratados ahí. AS: ¿No podían salir como lo deseaban? JA: No, no. AS: Y entonces, ¿qué hacían en el campo para divertirse? JA: Nada, descansando nomás. AS: Descansando. JA: Descansando. AS: ¿Unos de los braceros tenían cosas como radios o algo así? JA: Radios, grabadoras. AS: Y cuando se iban para el pueblo, ¿cómo llegaban allá? JA: Caminando. AS: Y, ¿había iglesias por allá? JA: Sí, iglesias. AS: ¿Podían ir a misa? JA: Iglesias evangélicas. AS: Y, ¿cómo celebraban los festivos como Semana Santa y la Navidad? JA: Pues nosotros pertenecemos desde muy chicos, somos de la, evangélicos nosotros. Pos así es que cuando, como ahora en los domingos íbamos, pos solamente nuestra iglesia, nuestra secta nosotros. AS: Y, ¿les daban días libres? JA: Los domingos, es que los mismos pastores, pos ellos dicen: “Nosotros no podemos ir, pero podemos venir por ustedes una hora, dos horas”, y ellos nos traiban [traían]. AS: Y, ¿también celebraban días festivos mexicanos como el 16 de Septiembre en los campos? JA: No, pos yo lo que me doy cuenta, solamente el dieciséis era cuando se tiraban de arriba los como, con paracaídas, es lo que nos divertíamos a veces. AS: Y, ¿cómo era donde vivía y dormía? JA: Son unos, eran como nosotros le decíamos, barracas. Onde eran muy grandes, onde alcanzaban como cuatrocientos hombres ahí. Porque no nomás cada patrón tenía, cada quien su lugar onde tuviera su gente, sino que ahí estábamos casi de varios patrones, su gente, por donde eran como cuatrocientos hombres. Nomás que allí pues es como, así en la primera una camita aquí abajo, luego otra aquí onde dormían tres en cada… Ni siquiera juera colchón, era de piso macizo. Nomás que pos le poníamos arriba una cobijita así arriba para dormir. AS: Y, ¿el patrón les daba las cobijas? JA: No, no. AS: ¿Tenían que comprar? JA: Comprarlas. AS: Y, ¿dónde estaban los baños, estaban cerca del cuarto o aparte? JA: No, los baños, por ejemplo, como aquí era onde dormíamos y por un lado estaba, los baños ahí. AS: Y, ¿cómo hacían para lavar su ropa? JA: Pues la ropa la lavábamos nosotros mismos, pues, mismos. AS: Y usted pasó, ¿cuántos años trabajando como bracero? JA: Pos no completos diré los años, pero jueron meses. Por ejemplo como el [19]64 duraría yo como unos siete meses. El [19]65 como seis meses. En Texas, como tres meses, porque según como, en Texas pos era puro algodón y ahí es onde, pues ése es nomás una pasada que daba, no había mucho trabajo, puro algodón, puro algodón. AS: Y cuando uno de los contratos se terminó, ¿regresaba a México? JA: A México, a México. AS: Y después… JA: Y después nos… AS: Y, ¿como cuánto tiempo duró entre cada…? JA: No, pos nomás visitábamos nuestra familia, ajá. Y cuando pasábamos en la frontera y nos decían: “Bueno, y, ¿tienes documentos?”. Pos nomás le enseñábamos, teníamos una miquita, dice: “¿Pos a poco desde ese tiempo ustedes están?”. “Sí, pos por allá estamos nosotros, trabajando”. Era La Migración mexicana. AS: Y, ¿regresó usted a México cuando terminó su contrato final? JA: Pues nomás unos días, pero de ahí nos volvimos a venirnos para acá y ya de ahí pos ya no, cuando se acuerda que antes comenzó a traer entre la gente aquí, pues ya había trabajo aquí y a trabajar. Y, pos un tiempo anduvimos aquí trabajando, también sin papeles, también aquí y aquí anduvimos con varios patrones trabajando, cortando ocra, jitomate, iba al jitomate, a cortar, limón, en la uva también, lo que sea, pero ya sin, no teníamos nosotros pues, permisos. AS: Y, ¿cuántos años usted pasó aquí trabajando así sin permisos? JA: Pues aquí, casi digo desde el [19]80 y… Desde el [19]80, por ahí. Pues nosotros ya no hemos salido a México. AS: Y entonces se casaron, ¿cuándo? JA: Pues ya desde entonces… AS: ¿En México? JA: Cuando fue La Amnistía, ¿se acuerda? Fue La Amnistía, entonces tuvimos que traer nuestra familia para acá. AS: Entonces ustedes se casaron después de que terminó el programa, pero antes de que se regresó a los Estados Unidos. Y entonces, ¿usted se vino solo y dejó a la familia? JA: La familia en México. AS: Y después, ¿cuántos años duraron todos? JA: Pues hasta cuando fue el [19]89. AS: Y, ¿después en el [19]89 vino? JA: Sí, porque ya después decían que todo aquél que tenía su familia que se podía venir para acá. AS: Y, ¿se hicieron residentes? JA: Sí. AS: Y, ¿tienen su ciudadanía? JA: No, residentes. AS: ¿Para usted qué significa el término bracero para usted? JA: Pues, pues para mí, pues… Pues como le digo, fue una necesidad que nosotros veníamos, porque no teníamos, ¿verdad? Porque si allá no había cosecha, pos a veces es por nuestra necesidad, veníamos nosotros aquí. Aunque ganábamos poco pero allá en México, entonces nos pagaban aquí, si por ejemplo allá nos los pagaban a $12 dólares, $12.50 el dólar y pues era allá una ayuda para nuestra familia y pues, aunque no, digo, aunque sufrimos pero pues ni modo, a eso veníamos nosotros, como braceros a trabajar. AS: ¿En qué forma sufrieron en tener que trabajar? JA: Porque nos sacaban un, digo, porque muchos patrones eran como filipinos, que eran muy malos, ya nomás les faltaba como, pos el chicote para, como hasta para pegarnos así, ¿verdad? Esos eran muy malos, filipinos y no quería que ni siquiera nos enderezáramos, bien dobladitos y decía: “Bien agachados, hacer muchas cajas”, decía. Pero sí, si a veces ya no aguantábamos así agachados, nos medio así, poníamos la rodilla abajo. “Nada, nada, agachado”, dice, “sentado no muchas cajas”. AS: Y en los tres diferentes campos que fue a, ¿sus mayordomos fueron todos filipinos? JA: No, no, uno nomás. AS: ¿Uno? JA: Uno nomás. AS: Y, ¿los otros dos? JA: Los otros fueron americanos. AS: Oh, ¿sí?, ¿cómo ellos los trataban? JA: Uno bien, los otros bien, digo, no eran iguales como los filipinos. Un patrón pues era, hasta ahora me acuerdo, se llamaba Martín Corona. Pues eran más buenos, digo, pues si quiera que no nos maltrataban como unos. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez ustedes trataron de pelear contra los mayordomos que los maltrataban? JA: No, no, no. AS: Simplemente… JA: No. AS: ¿No? JA: Solamente como digo son los locales, los que querían pelear así. Hasta pelearon una vez, no con el grupo de nosotros, sino fue con otros. Se pegaron y se encontraron una tienda y se agarraron se aventaron sillitas y todo, por causa del trabajo que les viene uno a quitar el trabajo y todo que dicen. AS: Y, ¿cómo se siente usted de que lo llamen bracero? JA: Pues bien, bien, ¿verdad? Aunque digo, no jue una, no jue un gusto nada más por venirnos, sino que fue por nuestra necesidad y pues ésa era… Nuestro deseo es que a veces por conocer también aquí en Estados Unidos. Cuando veníamos las primeras veces, cuando entramos, dicen: “No, pos nos vamos a trabajar a Estados Unidos”. Pero nadien sabía el sufrimiento como, por eso decían que si ahora juera la gente como antes, yo creo que la gente no, no les gustaría el trabajo como era antes. AS: ¿Entonces usted piensa que sus recuerdos de haber trabajado como bracero son positivos o negativos en general? JA: Pues positivos. AS: Y, ¿el haber sido bracero cambió su vida de alguna manera? JA: Pos, porque digo, pa nuestra necesidad en México, aquí aunque sea poco, pues era un poquito muncho ahí en México. AS: Y usted crees que sabiendo cómo era, pues como, usted ya sabe cómo, duro el trabajo, fue sufrimiento y todo, si usted hubieras sabido eso cuando era joven, ¿cree que otra vez hubiera decidido ser bracero? JA: Pues yo creo que, yo creo que sí, ¿verdad? Como le digo, por nuestra necesidad, sí. Es como ahorita, mucha gente en nuestro México, la gente casi digo, allá semos la familia siempre pobres y venimos hasta arriesgando la vida. Mucha gente arriesga la vida por venir a ganarse un centavo aquí, porque allá no hay trabajo. Todo lo que no haiga del temporal, si no llueve no hay cosecha, por eso mucha gente se está viniendo pa acá y así era nosotros, nuestra necesidad. AS: No sé, de pronto hay algo más que usted quiere decir algo, no sé, una historia o algo que no hemos hablado de… JA: Pues de lo que digo, otras cosas como lo que nosotros sufríamos, ¿verdad? AS: Sí. JA: Decían mis compañeros, decían: “Si estuvieras en tu pueblo, en tu tierra, hoy hay una feria ahí, [es]tuvieras allá o tu esposa”, dice, “a lo mejor”, dice, “está”, dice, “ahí con el Sancho allá en México”. Pero sí en ese tiempo yo les digo: “Si supieran que yo soy soltero, no soy casado”. Pos yo me sentía pues bien, pues la gente aquí. Porque allá en ese tiempo había mucha gente, digo, de nuestro grupo, sino que de otro le sacaban las cartas y les ponían mala información, que tu esposa, las que tenía su esposa, les ponían: “Tu esposa ya se jue con otro”. Y había una vez que, como les platico, que un muchacho se puso loco un viernes, se jue al pueblo y cuando llegó como a las cuatro de la mañana, lo traiba la Policía, se volvió loco, trastornado nomás por [ha]berle dicho que su esposa se había ido con otro. Sí, porque entonces no era como ahora en este tiempo que puede uno ir por donde quiera, ahí nomás es, de tu trabajo al campo y nomás quedan los recuerdos, nomás. (risas) AS: Pues claro. Y, ¿cómo? Pues aunque usted fue soltero mientras que estaba en el programa, ¿cómo cree que siendo un bracero afectó a su familia y su esposa? JA: Pos sí, porque digo, todos aquellos que tenían sus esposas decían: “Nosotros queremos nuestras esposas, esposos que se vengan”. Y decíanos, decían: “[Es]tán ganando dinero, déjenlos que trabaje”. Pero las esposas decían: “No”, dice, “nosotros queremos nuestros esposos que se vengan para acá”. Porque en ese tiempo mucha, mucha gente se desertaba y se, o hasta se quedaban aquí. AS: Y, ¿usted cree que hubiera estado casado antes de irse, todavía hubiera, todavía se hubiera ido a ser bracero? JA: Casado, pues, pues más, con más razón yo digo, porque ya casado tiene uno que mantener la familia. AS: Y, ¿usted cree que aunque no se casó hasta después, que todavía su experiencia como bracero afectó su familia y su esposa y sus hijos ahora? JA: No. 2do: No, pos era poquito tiempo, era poquito tiempo. JA: Malo pongo ya que mucha gente… 2do: Como ora, que ya no regresa. JA: Munchas gentes se quedan aquí diez años, cinco años y ya no van a las esposas. 2do: No llegan con sus mujeres, muy triste, ahora en este tiempo ya están muchas mujeres solas. AS: Entonces, ésas son todas las preguntas que yo planeaba decirle. JA: Tá bien. AS: ¿Quiere decir algo más o algo que no hablé de, que no le pregunté o algo? JA: No, está bien, está bien. AS: ¿Sí? AC: Yo nací el día 20, es el mes 9, veintitrés del [19]34. AS: Y, hábleme de su familia, ¿tenía muchos hermanos, hermanas? AC: Oh, sí. Hermanos, fuimos seis hermanos, todavía vivimos los seis y cuatro hermanas, diez, ey. Esos vivimos ahorita, diez hermanos. AS: Y, ¿dónde viven sus hermanos y hermanas ahora? AC: Mis hermanas están allá en este, en el Valle de San Fernando, allí pues como, pues no, a lo mejor no famosas, pero es, ahí está San Fernando y luego allí están en Pacoima, ahí [es]tá junto los pueblitos esos. Ahí están mis hermanos y mis hermanas y otro hermano está, ahí nomás están dos hermanos, y otro hermano está en Merced y dos están en México, ésos van y vienen. Uno vive en Majacolma, Michoacán y el otro allá en Jaripa, Michoacán pero van y vienen, van y vienen. Nomás que estos casi, estos aquí están con su familia pues casi (ininteligible) como yo también casi no llego a ir pa allá ya. Toda mi familia aquí está también todos… AS: Y, ¿a qué se dedicaban sus padres? AC: Pos al trabajo también del, en el campo, la agricultura, por decir. AS: Y, ¿fue usted a la escuela? AC: En México estuve en la escuela poquito, como hasta segundo, más o menos, ey, poquito. AS: Y, ¿aprendió usted a leer y a escribir? AC: Sí, poquito, no muy, más o menos, no. AS: Y, ¿cuántos años tenía cuando empezó a trabajar? AC: ¿Allá o aquí? AS: Allá, por decir su primer trabajo. AC: Allá en cuanto, en cuanto podía primero con un azadón, después con una yunta de mulas andaba sembrando maíz y frijol y esos, garbanzo. AS: Y, ¿cuántos años tenía? AC: Más o menos pos unos dieciséis años, dieciocho, ya a los veinte me vine para acá y ya. Y, pero seguía trabajando en lo mismo, casi. Aquí no, pero allá, digo, cuando iba sí. AS: Y, ¿cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero? AC: Pos allá en México supimos que pagaba uno un dinero por venir a contratarse. La primera vez vine a Hermosillo, Sonora, pero se cerraron las contrataciones y no me pude contratar. Y luego fui pa, y luego me vine a Mexicali el primer año y ahí me contraté en Mexicali. Y ya después de allí luego otra vez fui a Irapuato, Guanajuato pero tampoco, no pudimos contratarnos. Y ya después en Empalme, todas las veces en Empalme, Sonora ahí fue cuando uno contrataba y venía y así. Diez años estuve viniendo del [19]54 hasta el [19]64. AS: Y, ¿cuántos años tenía cuando primero, en el [19]54 cuando primero se vino a trabajar? AC: Pos yo digo veintiuno, yo creo veinte y veintiuno, por ahí más o menos. AS: Y, ¿estaba usted casado? AC: No, soltero. Todo el tiempo que vine, vine soltero. Me casé ya grande, de treinta y un años. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez llegó a pensar en los Estados Unidos antes de aquella época? AC: No, hasta cuando vine de bracero la primera vez, fue el primer año. AS: Y, ¿por qué decidió irse a contratarse como un bracero? AC: Pos decidí por, para pasar para ayudar a mis padres, ellos nunca, mi apá nunca vino. Yo, cuando venía la primera vez, como está allí, los ayudaba a ellos, ahí estaban allá, nomás yo venía y así. AS: Entonces y, ¿cuáles eran sus medios y sus expectativas para ser bracero o qué pensaba que iba a sacar de trabajar en los Estados Unidos? AC: Pos no, nomás así dijera, pos como todos venían pa acá, yo también venía, dije: “A ver si, y sí”. Pero, pos es que ganaba uno muy poco en aquel tiempo, pagaban muy barato. AS: ¿Puede describir el proceso de contratación? AC: ¿Cómo? AS: Como, ¿cómo fue el proceso en que decidió que quería aplicar y que le dieron el permiso? Y los pasos que tuvo que tomar para llegar a su trabajo en los Estados Unidos. AC: Pos la, pos venía uno como, por ejemplo si veníamos a Empalme, se contrataba uno y luego de ahí nos traiban [traían] en el tren hasta la frontera, hasta Mexicali. Luego de Mexicali allí nos entraban a un corralón allí en El Centro y allí ya nos contrataban, ya nos daban un pasaporte por un tiempo, por cuarenta y cinco días te contrataban y ya luego pos sí, ahí trabajábamos y luego de allí a los cuarenta y cinco días si había tiempo, te volvían a contra[tar], a renovar el contrato si no, pues luego lo echaban a uno a veces pa juera. Pero si había chanza que te renovaban el contrato, pos seguías trabajando y así, así era, así era la bracereada. (risas) Y allí lo, pos lo que pasa es que lo trataban a uno poquito mal porque allí pos en la entrada luego luego lo desnudaban a uno y le esprayaban a uno. Ayer estaban diciendo unos ahí, ¿verdad? Y luego le sacaban la sangre pa saber si no estaba enfermo de alguna enfermedad mal, yo creo pegadiza, sería. Alguno hasta se desmayaban cuando les sacaban la sangre, que estaban muy débiles, pos estaba uno mal comido y así. Yo, me tocó suerte que nunca me desmayé, pero algunos sí cuando sacaban la sangre. Y eso de la esprayada nomás era pa saber qué, que si no traiba uno, sería piojos, no sé pa qué sería. (risas) Le daban su esprayada y ya lo traiban a uno pa acá. AS: Y, ¿cómo te sentías cuando estabas yendo a lo del proceso? AC: Pos por las ganas de venir se sentía uno bien. No discutía uno como diciendo, no, que se enojara uno, no, todos muy voluntarios pa acá. AS: Y, ¿qué requisitos debían cumplir para ser braceros? AC: Pos cumplir con los contratos aquí de como ellos querían que trabajara uno. Si había un, algunas personas se salían de allí y se iban a trabajar por fuera ilegales, pos si los agarraba La Migra, pos los iba a echar pa fuera. No, yo nunca, yo siempre ahí hasta que ellos querían. Nos llevaban a La Asociación a este, a Fresno, ahí una Asociación y ahí nos renovaban otra vez quería uno trabajar. Pero algunos se salían que no les gustaba por ganar más se iban por otro lado. Pero si tocaba que no los agarraban, pos ya la hacían, pero si los agarraban, iban pa fuera. AS: Y, ¿usted alguna vez tuvo problemas con su trabajo que se quería ir? AC: No, yo siempre [es]tuve a gusto trabajando. AS: Y entonces usted trabajó, ¿por cuántos años? AC: Diez años de bracero, sí. AS: Y, ¿en cuántos lugares diferentes trabajó? AC: Pos anduve en algunos pueblos diferentes, como estuve en Salinas, estuve en Watsonville, estuve en Gilroy. Allá en Gilroy pisqué tomate, en Salinas lechuga, desahijé y pisqué; Watsonville fresa y luego allá pal lado de Stanton allá anduve en la desahije del durazno, en Meresville. Y de ahí en Río Vista también tomate y luego también limpiar, como limpia uno con un azadón. El apio también anduve limpiando y este, verduras pues, que limpia uno cuando se da todo eso. Pero todo el tiempo me tocó en puro de eso de, nunca, casi en la escalera nomás anduve desahijando, casi nunca me tocó piscar; puro agachado, así como el tomate, ajo, fresa y lechuga, puro agachado. Nomás que en ese tiempo le daban un azadón chiquito, así cortito pa limpiar, pa desahijar la lechuga y limpiar y el apio también. Y ahorita ya usan un azadón alto, así andan parados, más así en este valle de aquí los he visto yo trabajar y también allá para arriba ya hay puro azadón grande. En ese tiempo estaban los trabajos más pesados porque andaba uno bien agachado. AS: Y, ¿cuál lugar trabajó usted por más tiempo? AC: Yo creo, porque duré más tiempo ahí trabajando, Salinas y Watsonville es, allí duré más meses. Porque de allá pa arriba, temporadillas como de algunos cuarenta y cinco días y luego me cambiaba así pa otro lado. Pero en Salinas sí, y Watsonville estuve dos veces dos años como en, este, en Watsonville estuve el [19]55 y el [19]58 y duré tiempo. Y en Salinas estuve el [19]59 y el [19]64 también. AS: Y, ¿cuántos braceros trabajaban junto con usted? AC: Oh, bastantes, de unos… Pos yo creo que de unos cien pa arriba, más o menos. AS: Y, ¿todos eran braceros? AC: Sí, todos los que trabajábamos éramos braceros, de los que trabajamos ahí. Solamente una vez en la fresa, en la fresa una vez, ahí en la lechuga nos mandaban muchos. En la fresa éramos poquitos, una vez allí andaba un señor que sí era nacido aquí. AS: ¿Un local? AC: Local. AS: Y, ¿cómo era la comunicación? AC: Muy bien, hasta eso que con ése nunca nos la llevamos, andábamos bien. AS: Y, ¿con otros? AC: No, pos hasta eso que nunca tuvimos problemas. AS: Y, ¿nunca encontró que los patrones habían contratado a un ilegal o algo así? AC: No, no me di cuenta, no. AS: Y, ¿tenía usted mucho contacto con su patrón o con la familia del patrón? AC: No, poco, nomás pos cuando, como eran mayordomos los patrones casi no molestaban. Siempre traiban mayordomos ahí para que se dedicaran con la gente. AS: Y, ¿cómo lo trataban a usted? AC: Pos casi por lo regular los que nos tocaron casi siempre nos trataban bien. AS: ¿Nunca tuvo ningún problema con ellos? AC: No, no, nunca tuve problemas. AS: Y, ¿encontró algún tipo de discriminación alguna vez mientras que trabajaba aquí? AC: Pos nomás lo único es que lo hacían a uno trabajar mucho y poco dinero, ¿verdad? Muy barato pagaban, pero lo demás no, todo estaba bien. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez usted o alguno de sus compañeros del trabajo organizaron una protesta?, ¿oyó de otros braceros organizando algo? AC: No. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez se enfermó o había un accidente con los braceros con quien trabajaba? AC: Pos no, siempre me tocó buena suerte que no, nunca, los que anduvimos no, no tuvimos este, algo así de accidente, nada. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez fueron las autoridades mexicanas o La Migra para donde usted trabajaba? AC: De cuando bracero, no, nunca fueron con nosotros. AS: Y con el pago, ¿cúanto le pagaban? AC: No, pos fíjese, cuando estábamos en la lechuga en Salinas nos pagaban a $0.71 centavos la hora, $0.80 lo más. Y después, pos sí, así siempre. Cuando era por contrato, pos en aquel tiempo como el tomate lo pagaban por contrato, ése sí pagaban como a $0.10, $0.11 centavos la caja, ey. AS: Y, ¿le pagaban en efectivo o en cheque? AC: En cheque. AS: Y, ¿cada cuánto? AC: Cada quince días nos pagaban. AS: Y, ¿qué hacía usted con el dinero? AC: Pos lo poquito gastaba aquí, lo demás se lo mandaba a mi papá. ¡Ay!, dispense. AS: Bueno y,¿se las arregló para ahorrar algún dinero acá? AC: Pos casi poco, poco ahorraba, no ahorré tanto. No ganaba mucho y yo lo que me, lo demás le mandaba a mi papá todo en ese tiempo. AS: Y, ¿todos los braceros ganaban igual? AC: No, si era por contrato algunos ganaban más que otros, según les rendía más como era de contrato. Cuando éramos por horas, todos ganábamos igual. Nos daban las mismas horas, como éramos cuadrillas. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez hubo algún problema para recibir el pago? AC: No, no. AS: Y nunca, ¿siempre recibió el pago correcto por las horas que trabajaba? AC: Sí, sí, siempre nos… AS: Y, ¿alguna vez le descontaron dinero de su salario? AC: Pos dicen que siempre nos descontaban ese impuesto que es el que viene diciendo que nos quitaron, que nos lo rebajaron el Gobierno, este Gobierno creo se los mandó el dinero a México. Ese dinero nunca nos lo dieron, que nos los descontaban hasta el diez por ciento. Pos uno ni se daba cuenta de lo que le descontaban, ahí te daban nomás lo que te decían que ese era tu cheque y ya. Pero hasta la vista nunca, que nos lo van a dar, que nos lo van a dar y ya ve. (risas) No nos lo han dado. Se da cuenta pues que nos lo van a dar, pero que no. AS: Y, ¿ustedes tuvieron que pagar por su propia comida? AC: Sí, nos cobraban cada, del cheque ya venía rebajado, ya cuando nos lo daban ellos ya habían descontado lo de la comida. AS: Y, ¿qué tipo de comida comían? AC: Pos en aquel tiempo, casi en aquel tiempo había como si el campo era de filipinos nos daban pan y les gustaba, como a ellos les gustaba mucho arroz. Y también carne buena nos daban. Y si era, pos solamente una vez estuve en, en este, que estaba en un campo de unos señores que eran mexicanos, la familia de los dueños de la comida, esos sí nos daban más comida, echaban más tortilla y todo eso. En aquel tiempo casi por lo regular daban mucho pan, barras de pan le llevaban a medio día a comer al, llevaban unos tambos así grandes de carne o de sopa, frijoles y barras de pan. Ya después a veces como en unos campos que eran, que nos llevaban, nos daban tacos. Llevaba uno pa comer a medio día allá, tortillas. Pero casi por lo regular mucho pan daban en ese tiempo. AS: Y, ¿cuántas horas al día trabajaron? AC: Pos en eso de la lechuga a veces daban ocho horas o nueve, no daban tantas a veces. A veces siete, hay veces que tenían, como era la lechuga, era por pedidos de lechuga. Nomás decían: “Ya se acabó el pedido”. Y (ininteligible) unas siete horas o seis, a veces ocho, a veces nueve, según había. Diez. No, no tenía… AS: Y, ¿cuántos días trabajaba a la semana? AC: Cinco días, de lunes a viernes. Casi lo sábados en los tiempos de la bracereada casi los sábados no se trabajaba ni el domingo. AS: Y entonces, ¿qué hacían en sus días de descanso? AC: Pos allí descansaba uno en su casa, ahí en el campo. O a veces si, si como (ininteligible) pos nosotros no cargábamos carro pos a veces íbamos al cine y como el día domingo o el sábado si no trabajaba uno, pos se iba al cine, (ininteligible) en aquel tiempo. AS: Y, ¿era libre de ir y venir de un lugar a otro como deseaban? AC: Pos nunca tuvimos problemas, como esa vez si pedíamos un taxi íbamos al cine y agarrábamos otro y regresábamos a la casa, nunca tuvimos problema. Con La Migración, nunca tuvimos problema que nos molestara. AS: Y sus mayordomos o los patrones… AC: No, ellos no, nunca decían nada. Nomás que estuviera uno listo para trabajar y ya. AS: Y, ¿habían iglesias cerca que podían…? AC: Sí, también a veces íbamos a misa o a veces iban a donde estaba uno viviendo y ahí a veces iban sacerdotes a darnos la misa también. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez fue de vacaciones a México a visitar a su familia? Mientras que estaba trabajando. AC: No, hasta cuando ya terminábamos el contrato nos íbamos a México. Por ejemplo si terminábamos, unos dos tres meses o a veces hasta seis meses. Nunca duré más de seis meses, de allí, lo más unos seis meses iba y luego otra vez ahí venía. AS: Y, ¿cómo celebraban días festivos como Navidad o Semana Santa? AC: ¿Aquí? AS: Sí. AC: Pos siempre, como la Navidad y la [Semana Santa] esas casi siempre por lo regular en ese tiempo estaba en mi casa, México. Yo siempre me iba para cuando estaban allá las fiestas en México. Siempre estaba allá. AS: Y entonces, ¿estaba aquí como cuando los días festivos de los mexicanos como el 16 de Septiembre? AC: Y el 4 de Julio estaba aquí, el 16 de Septiembre y cuando allá en… ya como de noviembre para adelante siempre ya estaba en México. Unas temporadillas veníamos y ya. AS: Y entonces, ¿como qué horas era un día normal para ustedes?, ¿a qué horas se despertaban? AC: Oh, ¿para trabajar? AS: Sí. AC: Oh, temprano, como a las cuatro de la mañana. Pos teníamos que hacer línea para almorzar tempranito. Allí a las cuatro de la mañana ya estaba sonando una campana pa que se levantara uno a almorzar. Si se levantaba uno más tarde, pos ya no almorzaba porque recogían toda la comida. Y comía, pos no mucho comía en la mañana daban unos huevos allí y una avena, es lo que daban en la mañana y pan. Y ya pa medio día pos ya le llevaban a comer a uno allá al campo o le daban uno pa que llevara uno lonche pa allá. AS: Y, ¿la comida era suficiente? AC: Sí, pos sí nos… y si no pos en la tarde… si como en ese, como allí en Salinas daban muy temprano de comer, como a las cuatro y a veces y por ahí oscurecía, entrábamos a darles de comer, pos compraba uno alguna leche pa ahí, un pan y ya. AS: ¿Me puede describir dónde vivía y cómo estaba amueblado? AC: No, ¿donde dormíamos? AS: Sí. AC: No, pos este, estaba poquito mal, como las camas eran, eran casi por lo regular de a, ¿cómo se dice? Como periqueras, una, dos, así eran las camas. Y yo al principio me gustaba más bien dormir abajo para (ininteligible) le tocaba arriba, pero cuando pos, ahí se oía todo así hasta arriba. Porque esas camas como ora después que ya estuve viniendo de ilegal, después de que estuve de bracero vine de ilegal y allí en El Centro (ininteligible) están iguales a esas camas, igualmente como las que cuando veníamos, ey. O a veces también había puras… nomás quedó bien arriba, pero algunos campos sí tenían llenos de, algunos campos que eran muy grandes tenían muchas camas, una abajo y así. AS: Y, ¿los baños estaban al lado de los cuartos? AC: Ajuera, separados ajuera. Sí, adentro de los cuartos nomás era pa dormir. Y luego estaban los baños ajuera y ahí había unas, pos como pilas pa que lavara uno su ropa y ahí la lavaba uno. Cuando la bracereada estaba más duro, porque ahorita ya más pa acá cuando los inlegales había lavadoras y todo eso. Pero de ese tiempo no, ahí lavaba uno su ropa, había ajuera de [d]onde dormíamos había esos, [es]taba el lavamanos con sus tinitas, sus lavamanos ahí y ahí mismo lavaba uno su ropa. Taba pues un poquito más mal todo. AS: Y, ¿le proporcionaba su patrón artículos de uso personal como cepillos de diente, jabón, toalla? AC: No, todo compraba uno. AS: ¿Todo compraba? AC: Sí, esas cosas. AS: Entonces el patrón, ¿qué les dio, la cama y cobijas y eso es todo, para dormir? AC: Pero se me hace que los… Sí, ahí, esas las cobijas y todo daban. Uno compraba todo lo demás. Sí, allí daban ellos sus sábanas y sus cobijas y todo los… Esos eran los dueños de la comida, dueños de la comida eran los mismos dueños los que, daban las cobijas y todo eso. Los patrones, esos se encargaban más allá con el trabajo, de pagarle a uno lo que le pagaban del, de lo que le pagaban del trabajo y acá donde comía uno, acá se encargaban de las camas y de las cobijas y todo eso. Le cobraban a uno, yo creo que lo mismo que te cobraban de la comida, allí iba todo incluido lo de la comida y lo del, pos todo lo que ellos ponían allí. AS: Y cuando primero cruzó la frontera, ¿cómo fue ese viaje? AC: ¿Cómo cruzaba uno? AS: Sí. AC: Pos los traiban, mira, como desde Empalme lo traiban a uno en un, en el tren hasta Mexicali. Y de ahí de Mexicali, de allí lo pasaban uno allí por Douglas, allí era donde lo chequeaban todo y luego de este lado, allí nomás pasando Mexicali la línea, ahí había otros buses esperándolo ya a uno y ahí lo traiban a El Centro y ahí en El Centro [d]on[de] taban las contrataciones. Ya de ahí lo contrataban, le decían los pedidos a dónde quería ir. Pos había pedidos pa lugares distintos y aquí también había, pero aquí como hacía mucho calor, yo nunca quise venir aquí. Siempre me esperaba que hubiera pedidos pa allá más pa arriba. AS: Y, ¿entonces pasó diez años viniendo y yendo? AC: Ey, diez años estuve viniendo y yendo hasta que se acabó la contratación. AS: Y después de su última contratación, ¿qué hizo? AC: Pos ya al úl[timo], ya que se acabó la contratación, ya este, luego este, en eso fue cuando ya me casé y luego duré un año allá y ya luego me vine inlegal (risas) y hasta que estuve aquí inlegal hasta que luego ya, que arreglé mis papeles. Nació una hija mía aquí, con eso arreglamos y ya. AS: Entonces cuando se vino por la primera vez, ¿su esposa vino con usted? AC: Yo vine solo ilegal y luego ella vino con un pasaporte local. Y luego nació, vino una vez y se jue y luego la segunda vez yo fui pa allá y luego nació la niña. Luego cuando iba a nacer la niña, nació aquí y ya fue cuando arreglamos. Y luego después nació otro aquí y luego se volvió a ir ella pa allá. Nacieron dos aquí así y luego se fue ella pa allá y se estuvo hasta que arreglamos y yo venía a trabajar y iba, así inlegal. Y cuando, fíjate, las primeras veces tenía un pasaporte local y me pasaba, luego después me lo quitaron, ya pagaba para pasar, ey, y así. Y ella no, pos ella nomás vino con su pasaporte pero ya nunca cruzó así como nosotros, no. Ella vino nomás dos veces con su pasaporte local pasó y después hasta que arreglamos todos juntos, que arreglamos todos juntos. Eran tres, la niña que nació aquí y tres que estaban inlegales y arreglamos un tiempo y nos venimos y ya de ahí pa acá pos dijimos: “¿Pa qué?”. Allá en Los Ángeles, allá pues en el valle de San Fernando. Nomás que después se me escaseó el trabajo y ya me vine pa acá, ya me quedé de planta, así jue mi historia. AS: ¿Entonces ahora ya es residente? AC: Sí, de que arreglamos, sí, nomás residente. AS: Y entonces, después de todo vino y volvió y, ¿en qué trabajaba? AC: Cuando estaba de inlegal trabajé en Los Ángeles en una tortillería primero y luego ya después me fui allá pa, allá por ____(?) allá en el Valle de San Fernarndo, allá trabajaba en una fábrica que hacían partes para maquinaras así. Ya luego que se me escaseó el trabajo de allí me vine pa acá. Y aquí ajuera en la uva, puro aquí en la uva y luego estuve en el, después en el jardín como unos once años y luego regresé otra vez a la uva y ahorita ya no trabajo. Como tengo azúcar y me andaba sintiendo ya mal, ya no voy, ya tengo más de dos años que no trabajo, ey. AS: Pues para usted, ¿qué significa el término bracero? AC: Como, ¿cómo será? AS: O sea, ¿para usted qué significa cuando oye la palabra bracero? AC: Pos una cosa como, pos diré como triste, ¿verdad? Porque pos sufrimos mucho para los trabajos muy, trabajo muy duro y muy poquito dinero, ¿verdad? Se imagina uno, pues que le pagaban a uno barato. Nomás que en ese tiempo todo estaba más barato, pero de todos modos pagaban barato. Y todavía después de inlegal nos pagaban barato todavía, todavía este, a $2, a $2 dólares de inlegal todavía. Duramos años así por allá en Los Ángeles. Hasta después ya empezaban a aumentar de poquito en poquito. Pero de bracero pos sí, más bien digo que nos trataron poquito más bien mal que bien, porque pos nos pagaban a mucho trabajo y poco dinero. Pero pos, quería uno venir. (risas) De todos no reniega uno, nomás que era triste la, el bracero. AS: Sus recuerdos de haber trabajado como bracero, ¿son más positivos o negativos, usted cree? AC: ¿Pos qué será bueno? Pos yo digo, positivos, como es negativo, es como es, pos era voluntario uno, no lo traiban a fuerzas, ¿verdad? Veníamos por la propia voluntad de uno, ¿pos qué? Porque la gen[te] no lo traiban a uno a fuerzas. Trabajábamos, pos a eso veníamos, a trabajar, digo yo que a eso veníamos a trabajar. Si no quería uno trabajar, pos entonces (ininteligible) no trabaja, pos hay que echarlo pa juera, ey. AS: Y, ¿algunas veces los trataron mal, más que trabajar mucho? Uno, no les pagaban muy bien, pero, ¿nunca sintió que los mayordomos o los otros…? AC: Pos más bien siempre trabajábamos, teníamos que trabajar más o menos al nivel de como va toda la gente. Sí, casi todos tirábamos, hasta eso que todo, en lugar de, no le decíamos a, ¿cómo se dice? Maña, no, pa trabajar siempre trabajábamos todos… Me acuerdo yo que una vez andábamos en la lechuga y antes andábamos, como no le dolía, taba uno muy nuevo, no le dolía la cintura en ese azadón chiquito y antes íbamos compitiendo con otras cuadrillas. Por decir que, yo digo que más bien nosotros tuvimos la culpa de hacer tanto trabajo por tan poquito dinero. Porque cuando era por contrato estaba bien que trabajáramos mucho porque íbamos a ganar más, pero por horas, ¿para qué nos matábamos tanto si nos iban a pagar por horas? Digo, allí era ignorancia de nosotros. Porque si la gente va toda pareja, yo pienso que el mayordomo no decía nada. Pero la gente andaba sola recio y recio, como los desahijes. Cuando era por el contrario, como por horas, nosotros mismos nos carrereábamos porque el mayordomo no decía: “Tienen que hacer tantos surcos”, como en el desahije. Pos yo digo que la voluntad (initeligible) así. AS: Y, ¿cómo se siente usted de que lo llamen bracero? AC: Pos, que se sienta mal. Yo no me siento mal, así era uno. Todos así éramos igual. Como que mucha, que, como que se siente uno mal, como a la vez, pos no, yo digo que no me siento mal. Venía uno por su gusto, por hacer, sí, pos ni modo. Como de inlegal, no de inlegal lo trataban que (ininteligible) ¿verdad? Sí sabe cuál, ¿verdad? Pero yo, yo, (ininteligible) los trataban, ya era más, ya ahora que yo estaba allí ya había arreglado. Pero cuando nosotros nos trataban que mojados, así que veníamos de inlegales. Pero no, todos, no, no me sentía mal. AS: Y, ¿el haber sido bracero cambió su vida de alguna manera? AC: No, me sentí igual. (risas) AS: No siente… Si pudiera ir otra vez y tener la opción de ser bracero otra vez, ¿lo hubiera hecho? AC: Pos a lo mejor ya no. (risas) AC: ¿Por qué? Si pudiera volver cuando tenía veinte años para tener la opción para ir otra vez o pues, como no había ido antes sabiendo lo que tú sabes ahora, ¿lo hubiera hecho otra vez? AC: Oh, como si, como a la vez que si yo no hubiera sido eso y que ahorita tratara de venir de bracero, ¿dice? AS: Sí. AC: Pos a lo mejor sí venía. Pos sí, que volviera, que dijera que yo nunca hubiera venido de bracero y que viniera, como, pos a lo mejor sí por el interés de venir para acá, a la mejor sí viniera, ¿verdad? Como ahorita no ve que mucha gente de aquí entra como contratado otra vez y si nunca han venido, pos a lo mejor sí, sí como si no tuviera, como gente que yo, fuera gente nueva, ¿verdad? Y ahorita que se pudiera, pos sí. AS: Y cuando usted trabajaba como bracero, ¿dijo que de verdad nunca tuvo mucha comunicación con los locales? AC: Pos casi no, no había casi locales más de que una vez yo me acuerde uno, pero todo el día platicábamos con él. No, nos llevábamos bien con él. Pero casi por lo regular éramos cuadrillas de puros igual, braceros. (risas) AS: Y, ¿comunicaban con los (ininteligible) a el pueblo, el cine, a las cantina o donde sea? AC: No, casi con locales no, pura gente de nosotros. AS: Y, ¿tampoco con la Policía mucho? AC: Pos yo cuando bracero nomás me acuerdo, digo de bracero nomás una vez estaba, allá fue en Sacramento. Juimos, estábamos, ah, también en Davies estuve en el tomate, también (ininteligible) ¿cómo no me acordé? Davies, Davies, California también. Estaba cerca de Sacramento, Davies. Ahí pisqué en el [19]62 y el [19]60 y también tomate, ahí era puro tomate, [19]60 y [19]62. Y allí una vez, fue el [19]60 y lo que me acuerdo era la Policía que estaba yo, estábamos con otros y fuimos a la cantina y entonces al último sentí yo ganas de deponer el estómago y salí para afuera a la banqueta y entonces agarró la Policía, que me agarran y me llevan a la cárcel. Pero jue todo, al otro día ya me vine pa la casa, nomás porque estaba tomado. Pero no hubo problemas, nomás porque me vieron así borracho me llevaron y otro día que me echan pa juera. No me cobraron multa ni nada, pos tal vez porque me vieron así que estaba allí en la banqueta, fue todo. Nunca tuve problemas de los diez años que vine yo, no, con Policía nunca. Más que de esa vez que le digo que me llevaron allí, pero nomás por borracho era. AS: Y en el principio cuando primero estaba haciendo el proceso de la contratación, ¿tuvo alguna opción para escoger el tipo de trabajo que se fue primero? AC: No, no porque nomás le decían que iba a uno a trabajar en el campo y esa vez vinimos luego luego al tomate. En este, en Río Vista cuando estuvimos el primer año. AS: Y, ¿se le permitía tener con usted algunos objetos personales cuando se fue a trabajar? AC: ¿Como qué? AS: No sé, de pronto… fotos, papeles. AC: No, pos no tenía uno en ese tiempo, nomás… porque ni seguro social tenía uno. Ahí nomás apuntaban, le rebajaban a uno que el seguro y que el seguro, pero nosotros no… Yo agarré mi seguro social hasta, hasta que ahora que estaba de inlegal, sí. The interviewer is Adriana Sandoval and this interview is part of the Bracero Oral History Project. IA: ¿Bracero? AS: Sí. Bueno entonces empecemos con su niñez y, ¿dónde y cuándo nació usted? IA: Yo nací el día 10 de febrero de 1933 en el estado de Guerrero. AS: Y hábleme de su familia, de sus hermanos y de sus padres. IA: ¿Qué es lo que te puedo decir de ellos? Ellos vivieron en México, ahorita ya all of them passed away. AS: Okay. IA: Mis hermanos viven en México. AS: ¿Cuántos hermanos y hermanas tuviste? AS: Cuénteme de su primer trabajo. IA: ¿Aquí o allá? AS: Allá en México. IA: Trabajamos en el campo, en the farm. Eso es lo que hacíamos. We work in en el rancho todo el tiempo. AS: Okay. IA: ¿Me entiende? AS: Sí. Y, ¿cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero? IA: Porque mi tío. AS: Y tu tío, ¿cómo se enteró? IA: Porque él ya había venido aquí antes. AS: Okay. Y entonces, ¿dónde vivía usted en ese tiempo? IA: En Michoacán, México. AS: Okay. Y, ¿cuántos años tenía usted? IA: Veinticinco. AS: Y, ¿estabas casado? IA: No. AS: ¿No? Okay. Y, ¿por qué decidiste meterte como bracero? IA: Para poder ayudar a mi familia. Estábanos viviendo en una economía muy… tábanos muy pobres, pobres de a tiro. No teníamos… era la única esperanza de poder ayudar a la familia. AS: Y, ¿sus hermanos también se metieron como braceros? IA: No, no. AS: ¿Usted fue el único? IA: Yo fui el único de mi familia. AS: Y, ¿puedes describir el proceso de contratación? ¿Cómo fuiste a coger el permiso y los pasos que tuviste que hacer? IA: Sí, porque el municipio manda una lista a la comunidad. Si alguien quiere ir de bracero firmamos un papel ahí que queremos venir. Y entonces cuando llega un pedido de gente a ese municipio, que es el county, ¿okay? Te hablan que te presentes el día que va a salir todos, sí. AS: Okay. IA: ¿Qué más? AS: Y, ¿qué pasa el día que ellos te dicen? IA: Okay. Cuando tú llegas al municipio ellos te ponen en la lista de todos y te mandan a donde va a ser el centro de contratación. En aquellos años era Empalme. AS: Okay. IA: Empalme, Sonora. Y ahí vienes y presentas la lista en la oficina que está ahí en Empalme y ellos te dicen: “Bueno espera, posible te hablamos mañana, posible”. Después tienes que esperar hasta que ellos te hablan por un micrófono. Hablan tu nombre y entonces tú vas, te presentas, te dejan pasar a un tal, el representante de la gente. Entonces, “¿sí vas o no vas?”. Porque tienes que hacer un examen de las manos, si en verdad eres campesino, sabes trabajar en el campo o no sabes. Y si el hombre cree que sí puedes trabajar te pasa y del otro modo te pone un pretexto, pero no puedes. AS: Y, ¿qué pasa después de que el hombre te pasa? IA: Okay. De allí te suben en un bus. IA: Te traen aquí a Mexicali. En Mexicali te toman un examen médico. Si estás todo físicamente estás bien te mandan con los rancheros a trabajar. Depende a donde tá ese ranchero pero la gente la mandan en un bus de allí hasta el campo donde ese ranchero puede levantarte todos los días que vayas a trabajar con él. Porque por ejemplo a mí me trajeron de El Centro a Escondido y mi patrón vivía en el otro pueblito que se llama San Marcos ahí cerquita, unas cinco millas o diez millas serían. Y él iba todas las mañanas por mí al campo por un período muy corto y luego de ahí me trajo a su rancho a vivir con los demás muchachos que tenía ahí, ya fue diferente. AS: Y cuando estaban en El Centro, ¿qué tipos de examen médicos tenían? IA: No, nomás un, un rayo X y tu presión y todo y tu vista, tus oídos, es todo. AS: Okay. Y, ¿cómo eran los campos en que usted vivía ahí? IA: Bueno, en Arizona el campo taba muy malo, muy malo. Pero cuando vine aquí a Escondido el campo taba muy bien, la comida excelente, el campo limpio todo. Y después cuando viví con mi patrón, él nos tenía una casita aparte para nosotros. Yo pienso que todo estaba bien. AS: Y, cuando dices que era muy malo, ¿eso qué? IA: Cuando mi patrón por ejemplo cuando íbamos a plantar el tomate o a piscar el tomate o el pepino que es el cucumber. Los mayordomos eran muy mexicanos del grupo y no querían que la gente… que respirara. Todo el tiempo querían que tuviera… eran muy crueles con la gente. Yo no andaba con ellos pero yo estaba mirando porque yo era regador y los otros eran plantadores, plantaban los tomates, era diferente. Él no tenía nada que ver conmigo pero yo lo miraba. Y todavía después que emigré, yo miré muchos mayordomos que traían a los pobres trabajadores, ¿por qué tienen que tratarlos tan mal si somos latinos? Si ven que alguien no puede, le dices: “¿Sabes qué?”. Pos buscarle otra forma, tratarlo de ayudarlo porque de todos venimos por necesidad a este país. “Yo no tengo por qué cubrir lo que otro hace”. AS: Y cuando dice que los trataban mal, ¿cómo? IA: Por ejemplo, si estás haciendo un trabajo aquí y te sientes que te cansates o algo quieres enderezar: “¡Hey! No puedes, no puedes platicar”. AS: Y, ¿cómo era la comida en los diferentes campos? IA: Aquí en Escondido muy bueno todo. En Arizona no, la comida estaba muy… pues muy pobre, muy mala, muy mala. AS: ¿Qué tipo de comida les daban? IA: Green beans and beans and a little piece of meats and a bread. AS: Okay. IA: Daily. AS: Okay. IA: Daily, en Arizona. IA: En aquí en Escondido en la mañana te daban un desayuno de unos huevos estos y pues estaba bien, yo para mí estaba muy bien. Y luego siete días te daban carne, a otro día te daban pescado, pa otro día te daban algo diferente. Cada día era una diferente. Aquí estuvo muy bien todo. Y el único problema de la comida fue en Arizona. AS: Y, ¿cómo pagaban ustedes por la comida? IA: Ellos se cobraban del dinero y nos daban lo que sobraba. AS: Okay. Y, ¿cada cuánto les pagaban? IA: En Arizona, cada ocho días. Every week, every week. AS: Y, ¿era en cheque o en efectivo? IA: En Arizona era en efectivo y aquí en Escondido era en cheque. AS: Y, ¿nunca usted tuvo problemas en recibir su dinero? IA: Oh, no. Ni allá ni aquí. Todo estuvo… el pago todo el tiempo estuvo, lo que era todo el tiempo agarraba. El viernes en la tarde ahí estaba el dinero no había problema. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez usted tuvo problemas en el campo con el trabajo, con los mayordomos? IA: Oh, no. Yo nunca he tenido problema con los patrones ni con los mayordomos. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez sus compañeros de trabajo organizaron una protesta contra los mayordomos? IA: Cuando estábamos en Arizona mis amigos hicieron una huelga. AS: Y, ¿cómo? ¿Qué hicieron con la huelga? Y, ¿qué pasó con eso? IA: Los echaron a todos pa afuera. (risas) AS: ¿Los regresaron a México? IA: Ey. AS: ¿Cuántos eran y quién? IA: Maybe forty, fifty. AS: Okay. Y, ¿por qué tú no te metiste con ellos? IA: Porque no es mi criterio andar en esos problemas. AS: Y en general, ¿cuántos braceros trabajabas con en cada campo? IA: Eso sería muy difícil para mí decirte exactamente. Era demasiada gente, mucha, mucha gente. AS: Y, ¿cómo era donde comían? ¿Cómo eran las cafeterías? Y, ¿cada cuánto les daban la comida ahí? IA: Okay. En Arizona nomás comíamos una vez en la pura cena. AS: Okay. IA: Y el lonche nos lo llevaba. Nos lo daban caliente. Sí, eso sí pero lo llevaba un troque al fil allá onde andábamos. Cuando regresábamos al campo cenábamos. Es todo. AS: Y, ¿no les daban desayuno? IA: No, llevábamos un lonche. AS: Okay. IA: En Arizona y aquí en Escondido, aquí sí. Temprano de la madrugaba sonaba la campana y hacíamos línea a desayunar y nos daban lonche pa comer y en la tarde que veníamos una cena riquísima, riquísima. AS: ¿Sí? IA: La recuerdo muy bien. AS: Y, ¿los cocineros eran braceros también o eran locales? IA: Ah, no creo que serían braceros porque el que estaba aquí en Escondido era filipino. AS: Okay. Y cuando usted estaba trabajando, ¿trabajabas con los filipinos u otras personas que no eran braceros? IA: No, yo trabajé con gente blanca. AS: Oh, okay. Y, ¿cómo eran la relación entre los braceros y la gente blanca? IA: Muy bien. AS: ¿Sí? IA: Muy bien. Claro. AS: ¿Nunca encontró algún tipo de discriminación? IA: En Arizo[na]… Bueno, eso es muy difícil pero Arizona es un poquito diferente a aquí porque los mayordomos que teníamos en Arizona, los dos eran latinos. AS: ¿Eran mexicanos o mexicanos americanos? IA: Pienso que mexicanos americanos. AS: Okay. Y, ¿ellos fueron más duros con ustedes que los otros mayordomos que no eran latinos? IA: Sí, porque cuando trabajé aquí en Escondido nosotros nos comunicábamos directamente con el patrón. No había mayordomo en medio. AS: Okay. IA: No teníamos mayordomo nosotros. El patrón era el que nos daba las órdenes, el dueño, el dueño. Y cuando estaba en Arizona yo no conocí al dueño. Nomás traíamos dos mayordomos. ¿Quién sería el dueño? No sé. Porque un día trabajábanos, piscábamos algodón. Trabajábanos aquí y se acababa este fil y nos íbanos a diferentes fil. No, pues no creo que podía ser dueño de todo ahí, ¿me entiende? AS: Sí. IA: Eso fue demasiado. Los terrenos que piscamos, el tiempo que duramos pa que uno solo fuera el dueño, no creo. Posible tendría los contratos de piscar todo él, ¿entiende? AS: Sí, sí. IA: Pero posible sería el dueño, sería un rico súper millonario. AS: Sí. IA: Yo creo, no puedo… es todo lo que puedo decirte otra vez de eso. AS: Okay. IA: Pero aquí en Escondido te vuelvo a repetir que la comunicación de nosotros era directamente con el patrón, con el dueño y nosotros. Pero cuando él traía gente más porque hay que levantar el tomate, el pepino, la naranja, el limón, nosotros no nos metíamos porque los mayordomos del campo traían sus hombres a trabajar. AS: Oh, okay. IA: Así que nosotros no teníamos nada que ver. Yo no tuve problema porque realmente yo tenía mucha necesidad que no me permitía a mi carácter de meterme en problemas. Es muy duro venir hasta aquí, meterte en un problema cuando tu familia tá sufriendo de hambre allá. Hay que buscar la forma de no tener un problema. AS: Sí, sí. IA: ¿Entiende? Y hasta la fecha estoy aquí. AS: Y, ¿cuántas horas al día trabajaban? IA: En Arizona fue muy diferente porque íbanos muy lejos y salíamos muy temprano y veníamos muy noche a la casa. O sea que no te puedo decir exactamente la cantidad de horas. Pero sí estábamos fuera del campo desde las cuatro de la mañana hasta las ocho o nueve de la noche. ¿Okay? Pos sí, pero aquí en Escondido eran las ocho horas. AS: ¿De qué hora a qué hora? IA: De las ocho a las cuatro, cuatro y media depende de lo que usáramos pa comer. Pero aquí no tuve problema, no tengo problemas con el horario porque sí eran las ocho horas. AS: Y, ¿cuántos días a la semana trabajaban? IA: Seis. AS: ¿Seis días? IA: De lunes a sábado. AS: Y entonces, ¿qué hacían en los domingos el día de descanso? IA: Lavar la ropa. IA: Y es todo. Tomarnos una cervecita a veces. (risas) AS: Y, ¿estaban cerca de un pueblo para ir al pueblo en los domingos o sábados por la noche? IA: Sí, tábanos… Pos Escondido y luego estaba San Marcos y luego estaba Oceanside cerquita ahí. AS: Y, ¿iban al pueblo mucho los días de…? IA: Por lo regular íbamos los domingos a misa. AS: Okay. IA: Porque con los muchachos que estaba ahí viviendo, ellos les gustaba también mucho ir a misa y siempre íbamos. Y después de misa a comer o a veces íbanos al cine también. AS: Y, ¿qué hacían? ¿A veces se quedaban en los campos? Y, ¿qué hacían mientras tenían su día libre allá si no iban al pueblo? IA: ¡Uh! Había que lavar. Había que lavar. Había que limpiar donde vivíamos nosotros. Un día no es nada. AS: Y, ¿jugaban deportes por afuera? IA: Nada, nada. A veces íbanos a la playa pero no, no muy seguido porque teníamos una sola maquinita pa lavar la ropa. En lo que yo lavo la mía, aquél taba limpiando algo, su cama o algo o cambiándola y ya con eso se acabó el día. AS: Sí. IA: Ya. Si íbanos a misa ya cuando veníamos pa atrás ya era noon. No, ya it’s time to rest a little bit but tomorrow will be Monday, what are you gonna do? AS: Yeah. Y, ¿los mayordomos y los patrones dejaban que ustedes venían y iban al pueblo como ustedes querían o ellos los llevaban o les mandaban? IA: No, el domingo era de nosotros. We can do whatever we wanted to do. AS: Y mientras trabajaste, ¿alguna vez tenía unos días libres para regresar a México a ver a su familia? IA: No, yo en Arizona estuve seis meses y yo no regresé a México hasta que salí para ajuera. Cuando salí, me fui directo a la casa. Y cuando estuve en Escondido dieciocho meses, salí para Mexicali, voltié a Tijuana, arreglé mis papeles y entré para adentro y trabajé un tiempo pa hacer un poquito más de dinero y entonces fui. Déjeme… duré dos años antes de ir a la casa. More or less. AS: Y entonces, ¿cómo celebraban los días festivos? IA: No había días festivos. AS: ¿No? ¿Para nada? Okay. IA: Cuando yo trabajé en Escondido nunca oía un día de fiesta. Todos los días teníamos que trabajar. AS: ¿Aún la Navidad y la Semana Santa? IA: Every day. AS: Okay. IA: Y si pos había una emergencia por lo que fuera, que había que trabajar trabajábamos el domingo también. AS: Y, ¿qué hacías con el dinero que ganabas? IA: Mandaba a mi padres pa que se ayudaran. AS: Y, ¿cómo te comunicabas con sus padres? IA: Por carta. AS: ¿Carta? ¿Cada cuánto escribías? IA: Every week. AS: Okay. IA: Every week, every week. Y les mandaba dinero twice a month o every month. Yeah. AS: Y, ¿le mandabas todo su dinero o tú guardabas? IA: Oh no, porque tenía que dejar pa comprar mi comida, mi ropa y pos algo también. AS: Sí, claro. IA: Sí, sí. Así que una, me quedaba como con un twenty-five percent pa mí y lo demás lo mandaba. AS: Okay. ¿Alguna vez donde trabajabas se fueron las autoridades mexicanas para allá para chequear papeles o La Migración fue para ver los documentos de los braceros? IA: Una vez. Una sola vez en la noche llegó La Migración a la casa. Nosotros estábanos cenando cuando llegaron ahí pero todo bien porque pos no había nadie que no tuviera papeles, que no tuviéramos la mica. Y llegaron a ahí y [es]tuvieron con nosotros platicando un tantito ahí y se fueron. AS: Y cuando ustedes iban al pueblo, al cine o algo, ¿ustedes hablaban o se comunicaban con los locales o los blancos, los otros mexicanos americanos o los otras personas por ahí? IA: Porque un blancos, ¿no? Porque no sabíamos cómo comunicarnos pero con todos los mexicanos que había alrededor sí. Siempre tuvimos muy buena comunicación y todo. AS: Okay. ¿Nunca había algún tipo de pelea? IA: ¡Uh! No, no. Todos los que vivíamos alrededor ahí de los ranchos todo era como familia, todo muy bien. AS: Y, ¿hizo alguna amistad duradera mientras estaba trabajando? ¿Amistades con los otros braceros que todavía siguen de amigos o fueron amigos mucho tiempo? IA: ¡Oh, sí! En realidad nunca hubo ningún problema de nada, todo muy bien, todo. AS: Y, ¿hiciste amigos que después de que se salieron de los campos seguían de amigos? IA: Por mucho tiempo ya, porque luego se… Por ejemplo yo me vine de Escondido, me vine para Mexicali. Muchos de ellos se fueron pal norte o se fueron a otros estados. Ya imposible de tener comunicación. A veces me los he encontrado. AS: ¿Sí? IA: Tenemos muy buena conversaciones, platicamos y recordamos los tiempos pasados y todo, como vivimos, cómo está uno de todo. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez usted o los otros braceros se enfermaron o había un accidente en el campo? IA: No, nunca vi de un accidente, nunca. De los, con los que yo trabajé yo fui el único que me enfermé una vez. AS: Y, ¿de qué te enfermaste? IA: Del estómago. No podía comer. Como que me hizo daño la comida pero mi patrón me llevó con un doctor. Me dio unas inyecciones, es todo. AS: Y entonces cuando se enfermaban, ¿los patrones los cuidaban muy bien? AS: Y mientras estabas enfermo, ¿faltaste al trabajo? IA: No, pero no era tan, no era una enfermedad que [es]tuviera encamado. AS: Okay. IA: Nomás que me sentía muy mal, ¿verdad? Y él me llevaba, regresaba y podía seguir haciendo mi trabajo. Pero eso sí recuerdo que fui tres veces. ¿Cómo se pagó? No sé. AS: Okay. Y entonces, cuando terminó su contrato de bracero, su último contrato, ¿qué hiciste después de eso? IA: Cuando se terminó mi contrato mi patrón me llevó al centro de contrataciones en San Diego y de allí me subieron en un bus, me llevaron a Mexicali y en Mexicali me llevaron en otro bus hasta el gate y así. Y allí afuera ya es mi problema. AS: Okay. Y después de que regresaste, pasaste por el gate en el bus, ¿qué hiciste? IA: Bueno cuando salí de allí lo que hice fue que me fui directamente a la estación del bus en Mexicali. Agarré un bus a Tijuana y en Tijuana me esperé por unos meses. AS: Y, ¿qué hiciste durante esos meses? ¿Qué hiciste en Tijuana durante de esos meses? IA: Nada. Ya allá no hice nada, nomás paseándome y durmiendo, comiendo, descansando, es todo. AS: Y después de esos meses, ¿qué hiciste? IA: Después de esos meses regresé aquí a California. AS: ¿Cómo regresaste? IA: Emigrado. AS: Okay. Y cuando regresaste a California, ¿qué hiciste? IA: Regresé a trabajar con mi patrón. AS: Y después trabajaste y, ¿por cuántos años? IA: Si recuerdo bien, trabajé por como por otro año o más y le pedí aumento y me dijo que pos que no podía darme. “No”, le dije, “¿sabes qué? Yo necesito ganar más dinero y pues tengo que buscarme otro trabajo que gane más dinero”. AS: Y entonces, ¿te fuiste a otro trabajo? IA: Entonces, me moví a Orange County y encontré otro trabajo haciendo pretty much lo mismo pero ganaba dos veces más. AS: Okay. Y después de eso, ¿te casaste? IA: Y cuando me moví a Orange County me casé. Esa fue la razón que yo le pedí aumento al patrón, porque le dije: “¿Sabes qué? Yo he decidido casarme. Quiero formar una familia y con esto yo no puedo, no puedo mantener a mi familia yo”. Dice: “Pos no puedo pagarte más. Adelante”. “Gracias”. AS: Y, ¿cuándo o cómo conociste a tu esposa? IA: Yo a mi esposa la conocí en Tijuana porque ella vivía en Tijuana. AS: Oh, okay. IA: Y ella era muy conocida de un tío mío. Y por medio de su relación de ellos, de la amistad que ellos tenían yo la conocí a ella. AS: Y entonces, ¿ella cuándo se vino a los Estados Unidos? IA: Ella se vino a los Estados Unidos en el [19]63, se me hace. AS: Okay. ¿Cuando tú estabas en el Orange County ya? AS: Y, ¿después se casaron y formaron su familia? IA: Sí, sí. AS: Y entonces unas últimas preguntas. ¿Para usted qué significa el término bracero? IA: ¿Qué significa ser bracero? AS: Sí, para usted, ¿qué significa eso? IA: Bueno, para mí fue una oportunidad muy buena que prestó este Gobierno que gente pudiera venir a trabajar legalmente pero el único error que hicieron fue que nos quitaban taxes. Y el tax no lo pusieron ellos aquí en su Gobierno, se lo dieron al Gobierno de México. Y ahora es que no lo podemos coger para atrás. El Gobierno de México no nos lo quiere dar. Ese es el problema. Ese es el error que ellos hicieron pero yo pienso que el programa de braceros ayudó a mucha gente pobre en México. A mucha, mucha gente les ayudó. Por ejemplo, a mí personalmente, yo hablando de mí, yo tengo mucho qué agradecerle porque yo ayudé a mi familia. Yo ayudé a mi familia. Mi familia se benefició mucho de mi sacrificio aquí en lo que yo estuve aquí. Yo pude ayudar a mi padre a que mandara a sus dos muchachos más chiquitos. Mis dos hermanitos chiquitos a estudiar a la Ciudad de México. Ellos estudiaron, se graduaron y viven muy bien. Yo me siento muy bien porque yo pude ayudarle a mi padre a que él los sostuviera allá. AS: Y, ¿cómo se siente usted de que lo llamen bracero? IA: No, yo pienso que no me molesta. No me molesta porque es una forma de llamarle al programa. Del modo que yo lo miro es el nombre del programa. No es a nosotros. Nosotros estábamos apegados al programa que así le llamaron al programa. Si estoy en lo correcto. AS: Sí. IA: Porque vinimos en el programa de los braceros, ¿verdad? AS: Sí, sí. Y, ¿sus recuerdos de haber trabajado como bracero son en general positivos o negativos? IA: Para mí fue una experiencia muy bonita para mí. Fue una experiencia muy linda para mí. Aprendí mucho. Yo no tenía idea lo que era este país. No tenía, porque yo me sorprendí mucho cuando nosotros llegamos a El Centro. Me sorprendí mucho porque yo me imaginaba el país en otra forma. AS: ¿Te acuerdas cómo lo imaginabas? IA: Yo me imaginaba completamente diferente en el sistema de la, en la forma de la gente. AS: ¿Cómo imaginabas a la gente? IA: Yo me imaginaba que veníamos a un país donde no existía el hambre, ¿ves? AS: Sí. IA: Eso fue mi so[r]presa Porque cuando nosotros llegamos al Centro te pasan, te bañas. Saliendo del baño te pasas a la cafetería a comer y ya de ahí vas a hacer línea pa subirte al bus a donde te van mandar Y ya vas limpio y vas un poquito más presentable. Pero mi so[r]presa fue que había gente afuera de la puerta pidiendo comida. Eso fue lo que me, ¿cómo es que nosotros venimos a trabajar a este país y esa gente no tiene qué comer? AS: Sí. Y, ¿qué tipo de gente era? ¿Eran latinos, eran blancos, eran…? IA: Black. AS: Oh, okay. IA: Bueno, en aquellos tiempos yo nomás sabía que había negros pero no sabía ni donde habían venido ni por qué eran así. AS: Sí. IA: Okay. Pero había en la puerta pidiendo comida y eso para mí fue casi imposible creer que hubiera gente en un país que taba solicitando miles y miles de hombres a trabajar y, ¿esos pidiendo comida? AS: Sí. IA: ¿Cómo podía ser? ¿Cómo podía ser? AS: Claro. IA: ¿Cómo puede ser? AS: Yeah. IA: ¿Eh? AS: Y, ¿alguna vez usted trabajó al lado de los negros en los campos? IA: No. AS: ¿Nunca? IA: Nunca vi yo uno trabajando. AS: Y cuando fueron al pueblo, ¿los veías por ahí mucho? IA: No, porque Escondido en aquel tiempo no había. AS: Ah, okay. IA: El único pueblo que tenía black era San Diego. Cuando íbamos a San Diego al park de San Diego al, no sé, no me acuerdo. Yo los miraba pero muy poquitos. Pero en Escondido yo nunca recuerdo haber visto ni uno ni en las tiendas en aquellos años. Era puro blanco y latino. AS: Y una última pregunta. ¿El haber sido bracero cambió su vida de alguna manera? IA: Para mí sí, para mí sí porque aprendí mucho del sistema de la vida de aquí. Yeah. Para mí un porvenir haber tenido la oportunidad de haber sido bracero. Yo mi problema es más bien con el Gobierno mexicano. Aquí con este Gobierno porque nos trabajaron bastante, nos quitaron el dinero y el Gobierno mexicano no nos lo quiere dar. Eso es todo. AS: ¿Hay algo más que usted quiera decir? ¿Historias que te acuerdes de que no hemos…? IA: No, no tengo nada. La otra vez tú me agarraste de sospresa, si no hubieras hecho un schedule todo. (risas) AS: Pues eso es porque tenemos las preguntas para poder si te acuerdas de algo más o… IA: ¡Oh! No, no, es todo. Pues realmente no tengo nada qué decir. AS: Okay. Muy bien. IA: Para mí ha sido un privilegio vivir aquí, no se crea. Si te gusta trabajar aquí, este es un país para que vivas bien; si te gusta trabajar. Si no te gusta trabajar no hay un país donde puedas vivir bien. AS: Eso es verdad. IA: Pero si te gusta trabajar aquí está bien para vivir y eso fue una de las cosas que yo vi de cuando vine a aquí. Y eso es lo que yo pedía a Dios, que me diera licencia de quedarme aquí porque a nosotros nos gusta trabajar. Si me gusta trabajar yo voy a vivir bien aquí, ¿eh? AS: Sí. The interviewer is Adriana Sandoval and this interview is part of the Bracero Oral History Project in Perris. AS: ¿Dónde y cuándo nació usted? EM: Yo nací el 10 de septiembre del [19]54. AS: Hábleme de su familia y su niñez. EM: Pues mi niñez fue pues triste porque la mayor parte de mi niñez mi papá no estuvo con nosotros por estar trabajando también para nosotros aquí en los Estados Unidos. Se vino contratado y nos hacía falta mucho en la casa a mi mamá, a mis hermanos. Fuimos seis hermanos. Y este, duraba su tiempo por acá y no[s] la pasábamos solos allá [en] el rancho. AS: Y, ¿cada cuánto usted veía a su padre? EM: Pues a mi papá lo veíamos cada dos años, sí. AS: Y, ¿cómo, qué era su relación con su padre mientras? EM: Pues cuando lo veíamos cuando él se regresaba de aquí pues un poquito cohibidos todos porque no sabíamos cómo reaccionar con él por, lo veíamos diferente. Pero con el tiempecito que ya se la pasaba con nosotros agarrábamos más confiancita con él. No[s] la llevábamos bien. Nos trataba bien él. AS: Y cuando él los visitaba, ¿por cuánto tiempo se quedaba? EM: Oh, él se quedaba… No sé si seis meses, no recuerdo muy bien porque era muy chica yo pero como seis meses, platicaba mi mamá. Se quedaba con ellos, con nosotros. AS: ¿Cuántos años tenía usted cuando primero vio a su papá que se pueda acordar de él? EM: Tendría como, no recuerdo muy bien, pero tengo más noción de los cinco años. A los cinco años ya me acuerdo más de él. Él montaba a caballo. AS: ¿Cuántos años tenía usted cuando él regresó, se regresó para la casa? EM: Ya cuando estuvo más tiempo, que lo tuvimos más tiempo yo ya tenía cinco años. AS: Y después de que él terminó el Programa Bracero, ¿él se quedó en la casa o se regresó a los Estados Unidos? EM: Se quedó en la casa por un tiempo y volvió a regresar para acá. No sé cuánto tiempo pero fue mucho tiempo porque en ese tiempo mi mamá estuvo embarazada de la última niña y él estaba ahí cuando nació ella. Y cuando nosotros nacimos él no estuvo, cuando yo nací no estuvo y otro que nació también no estuvo él. Pero ya de la más chica, la última se puede decir, sí estuvo él. AS: Y, ¿usted sabe cuánto tiempo duró desde cuando usted nació y cuando él la vio por la primera vez? EM: Yo creo que cuando él empezó a venir para acá yo no nacía. Pero cuando ya dejó de venir, él dejó de venir yo creo como en el sesenta y algo. Ya no vino él. Él se quedó con mis hermanos porque ya empezaron ellos a hacer agricultura allá en el rancho y a trabajar los tres porque mis hermanos ya eran más grandecitos, ya le podían ayudar a trabajar. Sí, pero se pasa uno unos tiempos muy tristes porque muchas veces hasta sin dinero se puede decir y en un rancho no era fácil conseguir porque no había trabajos, no había nada. Y cuando él se tardaba de mandar, yo pienso dinero, pues mi mamá se la veía muy, muy apurada, sí. AS: Y, ¿qué hacía su mamá mientras su papá estaba trabajando? EM: Mi mamá no hacía solamente más que cuidarnos, a criar gallinas, puercos, ahí no sé, una vaca o dos que tenían. Eso hacían. AS: Y su relación con su papá después de que él regresó, ¿cómo era? EM: Ya era mejor como ya fue pasando el tiempo y lo fuimos viendo, tratando más, ya era mejor. Yo más grandecita ya lo veíamos y eran bien. Fue muy duro. Como al principio era muy duro pero nos fue conociendo, yo creo también y se hizo a la idea que estábamos no tan mal. (risas) AS: Y para usted fue… EM: Para mí era triste porque veía a mi mamá llorar mucho y pues pasan cosas a veces. (llorando) Ay, disculpe. AS: No, no. Sí, claro. EM: Pero cuando él llegaba todo cambiaba. AS: Y mientras él no estaba, ¿como qué cosas tuvieron que pasar? EM: Pues problemas de que a mi hermano más grande lo mataron y mi papá creo tuvo que regresar rápido. Mi mamá muy sola, triste y sin dinero para poderle hacer su entierro, ¿verdad? Ah, pues muchas cosas. A veces no teníamos para comer cuando él andaba por acá no había y los abuelitos eran los que se preocupaban mucho por nosotros y ellos eran los que, más que nada se encargaban de tenernos ahí algo para comer. Pasan cosas difíciles. Mi mamá no sé, siempre lloraba, la veíamos triste. Pues yo pienso que para ella fue muy duro que él estuviera por mucho tiempo por acá. Pero cuando ya regresó todo, todo cambiaba, era diferente. Pero sí tiene uno sus épocas muy tristes, muy difícil y tiene uno que salir adelante y a él le dolía mucho eso. Ver sufrir a mi mamá, pero a veces no podía remediar las cosas. Él se tenía que regresar porque allá no había trabajo de nada. Tenía que regresar a buscar otra vez para sus hijos. Sí fue difícil. Es de lo que me acuerdo, estaba muy chica yo pero a los siete años él murió, cuando tenía yo siete años. AS: Su papá… EM: Mi papá. AS: ¿Murió? Y, ¿entonces? EM: Nos quedamos chicos todos sin. Los más grandes… el más grande pasó eso y ya se quedaron dos hermanos, fuimos seis y andamos así. Ahorita vivimos cinco, cuatro perdón, cuatro. Y andamos unos por aquí y otros por allá todos regados. Sí, ya le digo. Es difícil pero hay que aguantar, ¿verdad? Él tuvo que venirse también yo pienso a sufrir mucho. Pobrecito porque cuando llegaba yo creo que se sentía bien contento él y le echaba muchas ganas a trabajar en el rancho para ya no venir para acá para quedarse con nosotros. Lo veíamos trabajar mucho y decía, él nos decía: “Ya no los voy a dejar. Ya no voy a ir”. Siempre nos decía eso. “Yo también sufro mucho allá, no los tengo”. Sí. Y eso pasaba, sí. AS: Y usted mencionó que sus abuelos, ¿los ayudaban? EM: Sí. Los abuelos nos ayudaban porque mi abuelo el papá de mi mamá. Porque mi papá ya no tenía sus papás pero mis abuelitos siempre estaban ahí. De vez en cuando, cuando mi mamá ocupaba y era muy difícil porque mi mamá era una mujer muy callada, aunque ella sufría no, nunca decía. Ella sufría sola y lo que ella menos quería que se dieran cuenta sus papás lo que estaba pasando. Pero mi abuelita era muy lista y ella iba y nos veía. Yo me imagino que la cocina sola sin nada y ella se preocupaba por nosotros. Mi abuelito también fue muy bueno, mis tíos fueron… Tuvimos muchos tíos también que andaban por acá y también ellos nos ayudaban. Sí, casi la mayoría de mi familia anduvo por acá. Y ahora nosotros también ya andamos por acá, sin pensar que fuéramos a venir, aquí andamos ahora. Pues esa es mi historia. Que sufre uno estar solo sin ellos. Es la realidad. AS: Y entonces su relación con sus abuelos, con su abuelo por ejemplo, ¿él era como siempre estaba ahí? EM: Sí, como haga de cuenta si él fuera mi papá. AS: ¿Sí? EM: Claro, no podíamos hacer a un lado a mi papá. Cuando él llegaba era lo máximo para nosotros pero mientras, era mi abuelo. Mi abuelo fue una persona muy fiel con nosotros. Se quieren mucho los abuelitos. Mucho, sí. AS: Y después de que su papá falleció, ¿cómo llegó usted a vivir aquí? EM: Pasaron munchos años después de que yo me vine para acá. Me vine sin papeles de nada y este, me quedé aquí con mi hermana. Ella es ciudadana de muchos años y yo desesperada porque pues [es]tá mal que lo diga no me gusta hablar mucho de esto pero tuve un esposo muy, muy abusivo, muy malo. Tuve que dejarlo, me pegaba mucho. Lo tuve que dejar y venirme para acá para mantener a mis hijos, tuve cuatro. Y fue por eso que quise venirme porque México para mí era difícil mantener a mis cuatro hijos y darles escuela. Porque allá todo cuesta. Entonces por eso decidí venirme. Los dejé solitos para venirme yo y ya aquí me quedé. Y ahora ya mis hijos de aquí se han casado con personas… una está casada con uno de Guatemala y mi hijo está casado con una americana y mi otro hijo también. Y mi hija, la otra, está casada con uno de Michoacán, sí y aquí están. Y yo pos estoy con este señor. Sí. No, no es muy bien porque tú sabes, todos batallamos, sufrimos aquí. Yo cuando me vine se me hacía imposible que yo venir hasta por acá y dejar a mis hijos chiquitos. Siempre lloraba y lloraba por ellos. Entonces mi hermana me dice un día: “¿Por qué no te los traes?”. “No puedo, no puedo”. Porque yo ganaba muy poquito aquí. Me ganaba como $70 dólares a la semana, me pagaban. No me alcanzaba mucho y eso lo guardaba para mandárselo a mis hijos. Pude sacar gracias a Dios a una de mis hijas. Ella estudió Agente Aduanal en México y nomás que ya me la traje para acá la otra. Uno es contador de mis hijos y el otro fue chofer de autobuses que le gustaba tanto. Y mi otra hija fue secretaria. Pero aquí ya no trabajaron nada de eso. Ya no ejercieron su carrera por los esposos que tienen son buenos porque no las dejan trabajar. Ora a ellas les toca tener muchos hijos. Pos digo que ya no, no es bueno tener tanto hijo. No, ya no. Fíjese, es mi historia. AS: Una última pregunta.¿Dónde en México vivían? EM: En Zacatecas. AS: ¿Zacatecas? EM: Zacatecas. Sí, en Zacatecas fue mi pueblo. Allá nacieron mis papás y ahí nos criamos y solitos porque enseguida que falleció mi papá, como que mi mamá ella también ya no quiso vivir y se dejó como morir y se murió ella enseguida, como dos años pasaron. Nos quedamos chiquitas porque mi hermana la más chica tenía seis años cuando ella murió. Yo tenía como diez, algo así. Y nos quedamos solos sin ellos muy chiquitos los cuatro que quedamos y no, fue muy difícil nuestra niñez porque los tíos no nos querían. Nos quitaron la casa que habían dejado mis papás, nos aventaron a la calle y andábamos rodando por ahí. Una hermana de mi mamá que vivía en Guadalajara nos recogió y nos tuvo en su casa. Ella tenía diez hijos y nosotros éramos cuatro, muy pesado para ella pero ella fue la única que nos sacó adelante. Hace un año también se me murió ella, que yo, pues era mi mamá, le decía yo mamá. Era mi tía pero fue muy buena con nosotros. Y ella nos tuvo que sacar adelante. Sí, una vida muy, muy difícil porque cuando ya nos faltaron nuestros papás ya nadien, nadien te da la mano, todos te huyen como si tuvieras alguna enfermedad que les puedes contagiar. Uno solo sin sus padres no es nada. Sí, pero yo quise mucho a mi papá, a mi mamá mucho, sí. Tenemos bonitos recuerdos de él muy bueno, muy bueno mi papá. Sí. Y no se me olvida nunca y siempre le rezo, siempre pido por ellos, por los dos. Mi hermano también. Este, ¡ay no! Son historias feas que pasa uno. Si uno pudiera decir cada momento de lo que está pasando, de lo que sufre uno, tu niñez, todo. Yo no tuve escuela mucha también porque ya cuando tenía doce años yo me puse a trabajar pa ayudarle a mis tíos para sacar adelante a mis hermanitos también. Muy chica trabajé y iba a empezar la escuela y mejor quise trabajar para ayudar allí porque todos estábamos muy pobrecitos. Sí, te digo. AS: Y, ¿usted se recuerda de algunas historias que su papá hablaba de cuando trabajaba? EM: Sí, sí, que en primer lugar dice él que él extrañaba tortillas y el hablar con alguien porque entonces no hablaba en inglés, ¿verdad? Puro inglés hablaban aquí y las tortillas no había. Para él era muy difícil todo eso. Los trabajaban mucho, mucho que los trabajaban. A él le tocó mucho trabajar creo que en la manzana y la naranja. Dice que subían unas cajas, no sé qué por escaleras y dice: “Muy difícil, mucho trabajo ese”. Sufría él porque la comida no era buena y de todos modos pos tenía que comer algo. Pero sí le sufría y aún así se venía él a buscar acá. Sí recuerdo que él le contaba a mi mamá, pues nosotros estábamos chicos pero él le contaba a ella. Yo de cinco años tengo recuerdos de él y a veces cuando se ponía a platicar con las personas y los oye uno pero muchas veces en los ranchos se acostumbra de que los niños no están allí en las pláticas de los mayores. Siempre estábamos allá. Pues no tengo muchas cosas de que, de eso porque era muy chica yo. Pero poquitas. (risas) Sí. AS: Y ¿usted se acuerda de cada cuánto él mandaba el dinero? EM: La verdad no me acuerdo, de eso no me acuerdo. Pero yo pienso que sí mandaba no muy seguido pero pienso que sí mandaba. Si no, no hubiera… Mi mamá empezó a comprar que vaquitas, que esto porque él de era su ilusión tener vacas, caballos y se hizo bonito su ranchito pero luego pos pasó eso, se enfermó él y fue cuando ya se fue acabando todo. Y yo pienso que los tíos fueron los que acabaron con todo lo de él porque nosotros no nos dejaron ni las tierras. Y ya te digo, es todo lo que tengo que decirte. AS: ¿Sí? Tenía una pregunta pero se me fue. EM: Se te fue. AS: Sí. EM: Pues si te sirve de algo eso que te he platicado. AS: Sí, no, muchísimo. EM: Que llegaba una carta y llegaba yo me imagino, como cada mes al pueblo más cercas del ranchito y allí tenían que ir como en caballo a llevar la correspondencia para que no había de… Y en ese tiempo había mucha gente que se venía para acá. Yo me imagino que había varias cartas que tenían que entregar y las, como que juntaban un, yo me imagino el fin de semana todo para ir a entregar todo eso y en una tienda se ponían a entregar todas esas cartas, en la tiendita del ranchito. Sí, allí entregaban el correo a caballo. AS: Y ¿cómo era pues cuando llegaba la carta al rancho? ¿Cómo era? EM: Oh, o sea que sí, había unas personas ahí y le decían: “Ve dile a”… Mi mamá se llamaba Jerónima. “Ve y dile a Jerónima que tiene carta”. Y ya iba una persona a avisar y ya mandaba mi mamá a mis hermanos los más grandes y ellos recogían la carta y ya se la llevaban a mi mamá. AS: Y, ¿todos en la casa muy felices? EM: Sí, claro porque nos escribía mi papá y algo que nos dijera nos gustaba. Sí, nos hacía bonito. Cuando iba ya de Texas lo que nos llevaba era nueces, nueces y una vez nos llevó un radio. Sí, un radio. Que estábamos felices porque en el rancho, en ese ranchito éramos poquitos, no había música porque en muchos años atrás no se usaba y mi papá llevó un radio. Y las amistades o familiares… Porque el rancho era se componía de pura familia de nosotros. Se juntaban a oír el radio. No, sí, era curioso eso. Y me acuerdo también que llevó un termo muy grande que él le ponía leche cuando ordeñaba, le ponía leche y decía: “Esto se guarda porque es caliente”. (risas) Sí, era él… Cosita, pos no podía llevar nada. Yo me imagino que nada pero él acarreaba con sus nueces pa sus hijos, sí. AS: Entonces no sé si tiene otros recuerdos de algo. EM: Recuerdos de mi papá no. Pues, ¿qué te puedo contar de más de él? AS: ¿Él por no pasaba la Navidad o Semana Santa con ustedes? EM: No. AS: O, ¿casi todos nunca estaba? EM: No, no había eso. Navidades para nosotros no, no había. Yo en navidades tuve ya cuando me casé. Fue cuando ya empecé a notar las navidades. Antes no tuve yo navidades. Yo pienso que hasta me quedé con ganas de una muñeca porque yo veo muñecas y las… yo compro muñecas a mi edad. Ya tengo cincuenta y tantos años y yo compro mi muñeca, (risas) sí. Bueno, es que en estos tiempos no había tiendas como me imagino para comprar eso. Y pues mi papá era una persona que él como que veía el futuro. No veía nomás aquí, él veía más adelante y siempre quería guardar para tener más adelante. Porque cuando él llegaba y que nos veía contentos y a mi mamá también, él siempre nos decía: “Ya no me voy a ir, ya no voy a ir”. Y como a los seis meses despertábamos y él tenía la costumbre de si tenía su vaquita, llevarnos leche a la cama y despertábamos y ya no, ya no veíamos el jarrito de leche y empezábamos: “Mi papá ya se fue”. Y ya nos levantábamos: “Y, ¿mi papá? Y, ¿mi papá?”. Y decía mi mamá: “Oh, fue a un mandado”. Y pero ya la veíamos llorar. Cuando le preguntábamos sabíamos que él ya se había ido, que ya no estaba con nosotros y que teníamos que durar otro mucho tiempo sin él. Así pasaba la vida. Sí, fue una vida muy restringida porque pues no lo teníamos ahí con nosotros. Fue difícil, sí. Title A name given to the resource Aristeo Ortega Acuña Subject The topic of the resource bracero Description An account of the resource Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: Aristeo Ortega Acuña was born September 15, 1931, in Sahuaripa, Sonora, México; he was the second youngest of his nine siblings; his father was a laborer and also worked with seasonal crops; Aristeo was formally educated through the second grade; when he was fifteen years old, he worked in the fields of Obregón, Sonora, México; in 1957, he enlisted in the bracero program; as a bracero, he labored in Arizona and California cleaning, pruning, picking and loading apricots, lettuce, peaches, tomatoes and other citrus crops; he completed a total of four contracts; after the program ended, he immigrated to the United States; in 1967, he was able to bring his family with him. Summary of Interview: Mr. Ortega briefly talks about his family; in 1957, he decided to enlist in the bracero program; initially, he signed up in Hermosillo, Sonora, México and then traveled to the contracting center in Empalme, Sonora, México; he recounts the entire process he underwent, including the requirements to pick cotton, necessary papers, long waiting times and medical examinations; as a bracero, he completed a total of four contracts and labored in Arizona and California cleaning, pruning, picking and loading apricots, lettuce, peaches, tomatoes and other citrus crops; he goes on to detail the various worksites, camp sizes, housing, accommodations, living conditions, provisions, duties, routines, treatment, payments, contract lengths and recreational activities, including trips into town; in addition, he details picking peaches, which was especially difficult and dangerous, because of the high ladders they used; men often fell and were injured; despite the skill and risk involved, they were paid very little; he also recounts an incident in Sacramento, California when inspectors went to the camp, because the men were cheated out of their pay; they were transferred to another camp, and their boss was fined and no longer allowed to hire braceros; after the program ended, he immigrated to the United States; in 1967, he was able to bring his family with him; overall, his memories of the program are negative, because it was such a hard life, especially without his family.
