[2do es una tercera persona se presenta y participa periódicamente a través de la entrevista] MP: Buenos días señor Zapata. TZ: Buenos días. MP: Para empezar la entrevista, quisiera que me dijera, ¿dónde y cuándo nació? TZ: El 21 de diciembre de 1900… eh, ¡No! 29 de diciembre de 1937. MP: ¿En dónde nació? TZ: En el Ejido del Faro. MP: ¿Dónde? TZ: Ejido del Faro, Chihuahua. MP: Cuénteme acerca de su niñez, acerca, sus papás, ¿a qué se dedicaba su papá, su mamá? TZ: Pues mi papá era agricultor, en aquel entonces. MP: Y, ¿sus hermanos? TZ: Pues también trabajaban por ahí. MP: ¿Cuántos fueron de familia? TZ: Pos eh, todos, entre todos, todos fuimos como doce. MP: ¿Doce? Una familia grande. TZ: Grande. MP: Y, ¿usted fue a la escuela? o, ¿desde chiquito le ayudó a su papá? TZ: ¡Sí, no! Sí fui a la escuela. Tengo hasta quinto año nada más. MP: Y luego después de ahí ya empezó a trabajar. TZ: ¡A trabajar! MP: Y, ¿a qué edad empezó a trabajar más o menos? TZ: Pos yo creo que a los quince años. MP: ¿Cómo se dio cuenta usted del Programa Bracero? TZ: ¡Uh! En aquel entonces pos era lo que había de trabajo nada más. En, digamos que, salía poquito mejor allá, en el otro lado. Nos contratamos y nos fuimos a trabajar. MP: Y platíqueme, ¿en dónde se contrató?, ¿qué tuvo que hacer para ser contratado? TZ: Al fin, ¿cómo se llamaba la, la, estación? 2do: Río Vista. TZ: Al, no, la aquél de cont… Eh, no, onde contrataban pues le decían, El Trocadero, era la estación vieja, ¿no? 2do: Es la estación vieja. MP: Y ahí, ¿qué papeles le pedían?, o, ¿qué tenía que hacer? TZ: Pos, un número, le daban un número a uno. Y con ese número le hablaban. MP: Y, ¿qué tenía que hacer para que le dieran el número? Nada más llegaba, pedía número y ya. TZ: Sí, se lo daban a uno. MP: Y cuénteme, ¿cómo era El Trocadero? TZ: El Trocadero pos era un puro llano, ¿verdad? 2do: Era un corralón ahí. TZ: Un corralón, este, tenía sus oficinas así, vamos a decir allá enfrente. Y todos nosotros nos rodeábanos allí a esperar. MP: ¿Mucha gente? TZ: ¡Uh sí! Había mucha gente. Unos, ¿qué sería?, unos ocho, diez mil personas. MP: Bastante. 2do: Ey, cuando era el tiempo de las contrataciones. TZ: Mucha gente. MP: Y, ¿cuánto tiempo se estuvo ahí para que lo contrataran? TZ: Pues en veces durábanos quince días, viniendo todos los días de ahí, vivíanos en un rancho, y hasta que no salíamos. MP: ¿Todos los días iban y venían?, ¿y en cuánto le salía el viaje? TZ: En, $1 peso, nos cobraban el pasaje, ¿verdad? 2do: Sí, era muy barato. TZ: ¡Un peso el pasaje! (risas) De aquí al 30, más o menos, kilómetro 30 de la carretera Juárez, un peso nos cobraban. Procurábanos no, no gastar tanto, ¿verdad? Digamos para tener, para ir y venir y unos taquitos ahí. MP: Y, ¿no les salía mejor quedarse aquí? TZ: Pero no teníanos en dónde, no teníamos familiares en ese entonces, aquí en la ciudad. No pos, nos podíamos quedar ahí en la calle pero de todos modos no, pues vale más recalar a la casa. 2do: Pos todos los que venían de allá del sur. MP: Y luego ya que le nombraron a usted que entró al, no sé como nombrarle, ¿verdad? TZ: A la contratación. MP: Ahí, en ese proceso, ¿le preguntaron algo?, ¿le hicieron exámenes médicos? TZ: Pues aquí sí, sí le hacían a uno examen médico. Aquí en donde, el corazón, ¿cómo están los pulmones, ¿verdad? 2do: También los pulmones. TZ: Y ya, ya listo pa la tarde para que se arrimen a, pos ahí mismo se arrimó el tren, aquí a ontaba la casa de espera, vieja. En un tren carguero para atrás y luego en, nos íbamos. MP: ¿Todos los que cupieran en el tren? TZ: ¡No! Íbanos todos, casi todos los contratados, ¿verdad? 2do: Ey, todos los contratados. TZ: Unos mil yo creo, unos ochocientos diario. MP: Pues eran bastantes, ¿no? TZ: ¡Sí!, sí pos pasaban de ochocientos, ¿verdad? Mil doscientos, mil trescientos. 2do: Eran mil y tantos diarios porque eran en un ferrocarril con algunos carros y todos llenos de… MP: Bueno, descríbame el viaje de aquí al [El] Paso. TZ: De aquí al [El] Paso pues se fue en el tren, digamos, eran yo creo como dieciocho horas, pos si iba al pasito, ahí. MP: Y, ¿se iba parando o no se paraba? TZ: Sí, sí se paraba, a darle el pase al pasajero por ejemplo, a los cargueros que venían de allá pa acá, pos tenía que hacerse a un lado, pa librar. MP: Dieciocho horas. TZ: Yo creo que sí porque, salíanos de aquí a las once o diez, ¿verdad?, luego a las cinco o seis de la tarde llegábanos allá a las dos, tres de la mañana, o cuatro. ¡No, no, no hacía tanta!, dieciocho horas no. Unas nueve, yo creo. MP: ¿Pero sí hacía bastante, ¿no? TZ: Sí, unas nueve horas de perdido. MP: Y luego ya que llegaban allá a El Paso, ¿en dónde los bajaban? TZ: Pos ahí, yo creo también en los ferrocarriles, yo me acuerdo que caminábamos, ¿verdad? 2do: Sí, pos ahí en el ferrocarril se bajaba uno y ahí está el puente luego luego de Santa Fe. TZ: Caminábanos al puente. 2do: Ahí nos formábanos. TZ: Y esperábanos a que abrieran a las siete yo creo, ocho. 2do: Siete abren. MP: Y ahí en El Paso, ¿qué les hacían?, pasando luego luego. TZ: En, luego luego, no, nos embarcaban ahí en un camión y nos llevaban a donde lo concentraban a uno que le decían Río Vista. MP: Cuénteme, ¿cómo era Río Vista? TZ: Pos era un corralón también así con algunas barracas, ¿verdad? Que le decían barracas, onde se lo acostaba y luego, le daban a uno su catrecito, ¿verdad? 2do: Era el centro de contratación ahí. Ahí era donde ya ahí lo, ahí si lo contrataban ya y el que no salía electo lo despachaban para atrás. TZ: Este, le daban su camita, de esas dobladizas, tendía uno su cama. Le daban de comer ahí almuerzo, comida y cena. MP: Y, ¿tenía que pagar algo? TZ: No. MP: ¿Nada? TZ: Nada, ahí lo daban, gratis. MP: Y si ustedes querían llevarse, no sé, ropa o algo, ¿podían llevarse algo? TZ: Sí podía, sí podía uno llevarse cambios y ahí había onde quedarse, se estaba uno, tres, cuatro días y luego ya lo contrataban para onde le tocara. MP: Y ahí por ejemplo, ¿usted supo de alguien?, por ejemplo que no, no lo contrataban porque estaba mal, tenía alguna enfermedad. Y luego esa persona, ¿qué hacía? TZ: Al que salía mal según le sacaban hasta sangre también a uno, ¿verdad? Y yo creo lo analizaban cuando salía un poco mal de sangre, le hablaban y lo inyectaban según, ¿verdad? Creo lo inyectaba, sí lo curaban. MP: Y, ¿les decían para qué era? TZ: Sí, pos yo creo, el que salía malo de la sangre, sí. 2do: Es que ahí, ahí los tenían unos cuatro días. TZ: Al enfermo. 2do: Ya unos llegaba unas… MP: Por lo, mucho tiempo, ¿no? 2do: Sí. TZ: Sí pero lo dejaban bueno y sano y entonces sí lo contrataban, ¡vámonos! MP: Y, ¿cómo era la comida, el trato allá en Río Vista? TZ: Bien, para que más que la verdad, nos daban comida en el comedor, almuerzo también. Cuando nos quedábamos había, almuerzo, comida, cena. Comedor sí, no, le servían. Bueno, pasaba uno con su plato ahí, ahí le, cuchara y cuchara, ¿verdad? MP: A cucharadas. 2do: Ahí en el comedor, ahí. TZ: Sí. MP: Y luego aquí, me dicen que había soldados, ¿verdad?, aquí en El Trocadero, como para guardar el orden y todo. TZ: ¡Ah, sí, sí! MP: El orden, y todo eso. TZ: ¡Sí! Pos ya ve que la gente amontonada se hace una, ¿cómo quiero decirle?, pos como… ¡Sí! Pos es que la gente, eh, amontonada. Se va haciendo pa adelante, pa adelante y nos… “¡Vente, vámonos para atrás!”. ¿Verdad? Nos retiraban. 2do: A esos sí les teníamos miedo porque andaban con el rifle y nos daban. (risas) MP: Ustedes este, cuando vieron ahí los soldados y todo esto, ¿no les iba algo de… TZ: No, de miedo no. MP: ¿De miedo algo? TZ: No. 2do: No porque allá había mucha gente. TZ: ¡Sí! Lo más lejos. 2do: Venimos a talachar del lado gringo. MP: Y luego, eso era aquí y luego ahí en Río Vista, ¿no había soldados? TZ: No, allá no. MP: ¿Quién guardaba el orden ahí? TZ: Ahí había trabajadores, me imagino que eran trabajadores, ¿verdad?, de ahí. 2do: Había puros trabajadores ahí. TZ: Allí había trabajadores y, pero no, muy serio, muy serio. 2do: Pa los que lleguen ya era, ya estaban muy ordenados ya. TZ: Muy seria la gente ahí. 2do: Ya sabía uno qué hacer ahí. MP: Y allá en Río Vista, ¿había algún representante del Gobierno Mexicano? No sé, secretarias, o intérpretes. TZ: Pos me imagino que sí, ¿verdad? 2do: Yo creo que sí. MP: Usted nunca, bueno, usted nunca, ¿nunca le tocó algo? TZ: ¡No! Hasta eso no, pero tiene que haber habido representante del Gobierno de aquí. No, allá nomás de, la primera vez lo metían a la foto y luego a contratarlo. MP: Y, ¿ahí le explicaban de lo que se iba a tratar el trabajo?, o, ¿lo que decía el contrato? TZ: Sí, en lo que decía el contrato, también de… 2do: Ahí se firmaba el contrato y ya. MP: Y por ejemplo sí usted tenía alguna duda o algo, o no le quedaba muy bien, en claro o… TZ: ¡No! Pos ya ahí explicaba el contrato, ¿verdad? Digamos, cuánto se nos pagaba este, cuando íbanos al algodón, las cien libras de algodón a $1.55 creo, ¿verdad? MP: Muy poquito, ¿verdad? Y luego, ahí llegaban los rancheros, ¿no? TZ: ¡No! De ahí lo mandaban a uno en camión, digamos un camión, vamos a decir como estos urbanos, ¿verdad? Un camión a, por ejemplo, a mí me tocó ir al algodón a Lovington, Nuevo México. Y nos íbanos, cincuenta, sesenta gentes ahí en camión. Llegábanos a La Asociación, que le nombraban y ya están ahí los rancheros, en un techo esperando la gente. MP: O sea que, ¿entonces quién los llevaba, ahí a esa asociación?, o sea, ¿no iba así como que un guía que se hacía cargo de ustedes? TZ: No, pos yo creo el chofer del camión. MP: ¿Nada más? TZ: ¿Verdad? 2do: Ese ya nomás llegaba allá, había otro, otro corralón, ahí donde nos manejaba a todos y… MP: Pero entonces, usted que se acuerde, algún problema de que, no sé, de que los braceros le dijeran al chofer: “No, pos mejor vámonos para allá a otro lado o… TZ: No, nos llevaban allá directamente a donde iban a escalar la gente, ¿ve? Porque ya estaba pedida, digamos, este… Sí, ya había habido el acuerdo acá con los de Río Vista. Y cada quien allá agarraba, por ejemplo, si él necesitaba unos cinco, otro necesitaba diez, otro quince, así, unos dos. MP: Y por ejemplo, a ustedes si no les gustaba el…si el ranchero se veía así medio malo o algo, ¿podían decir: “No mejor yo me voy con otro”, o, ¿algo? TZ: ¡No, no! Sí todo, todos los rancheros que me tocaron a mí, se portaban bien con la gente. ¡Sí! Pos digamos nos llevaban al pueblo, al mandado y luego nos recogían otra vez el sábado en la tarde. MP: Y, ¿cuál fue su impresión cuando llegó allá al rancho? Porque ya ve que cuando uno viaja y llega a otra ciudad dice: “¡Ay qué bonito, no sé qué, así”. TZ: No pues… MP: ¿Cuál fue su impresión allá? TZ: Como todo el tiempo viví en el campo, ¿verdad? Digamos, llegamos de campo a campo. Pos se me hacía igual. MP: No había mucha diferencia. TZ: No, trabajo ahí era, pues sí, en la pisca del algodón la, la esta, ¿cómo se llama? Las ganas de ganar un centavo más. Eso era lo que lo impulsaba a uno a irse. Por que aquí, aquí pagaban en ese entonces, $12 pesos, ¡imagínese! Y allá ganabas pos $25, ¿verdad? MP: Y, ¿usted estaba soltero o casado cuando se fue? TZ: No, soltero. MP: ¿Cuántos años tenía? TZ: Como diecinueve yo creo, pos fue en 1953, [19]57, imagínese. MP: Y la primera vez que se fue, ¿fue ahí a Nuevo México, a Lovington? TZ: Al algodón a Nuevo México. Que sí a, ¡a Lovington!, ¿verdad? 2do: Sí. TZ: Sí, yo me fui con él. MP: Y platíqueme ahí, ¿qué hacían allá en el rancho?, ¿cuál era un día normal de trabajo?, ¿cómo era? TZ: Toda semana nomás el domingo no. MP: Y, ¿qué era así lo normal que hacía?, piscaba, pesaba. TZ: Piscaba algodón, tenía que pesar, no, todo el día a piscar. 2do: Piscar y a… TZ: Todo. 2do: Ir y sacar. TZ: Todo el día, digamos, y el sábado pos, íbanos al pueblo, ¿verdad? Al mandado. 2do: Estar en la tarde allá, ir al mandado. TZ: Nos llevaba el gabacho. 2do: Y en la misma lavar ropa ahí. MP: Y luego, ahí en el rancho, el ranchero les daba casa y les daba todo, ¿verdad? TZ: Sí. MP: ¿Cuántos había más o menos por casa?, o, ¿en barracas? TZ: Cuando fuimos ahí nos tocó como unos seis, ¿verdad? MP: Ah, pues había poquitos. TZ: A lo más, sí como seis compañeros ahí. No, cada quien nos tenía su parrillita ahí, hacíanos botana, y yo y él hacíanos botana juntos. MP: Qué bueno. Y, ¿se conocían desde aquí o se conocieron ahí?, o sea en otras áreas. TZ: No, pues es que él es mi cuñao. (risas) MP: Pero digo, se conocían en aquél entonces, ¿se conocieron? TZ: Sí, sí. MP: ¿Venían del mismo rancho?, ¿nacieron en el mismo lugar? TZ: Sí, veníanos del mismo pueblo. MP: Ah qué bueno, entonces siguieron la amistad bastante. TZ: Sí. MP: Hasta emparentados. TZ: Sí. MP: Qué bien. Y su familia entonces, lo apoyó: “Sí, vete y no sé que… TZ: Sí. MP: Y, ¿a usted se le hizo pesado irse? TZ: No, pues iba con ganas a trabajar, digamos, a ganar dinero porque… (risas) 2do: Partían con la esperanza… TZ: Sí, de veras, de ganar dinero. No, nos fue remal esa vez. Fíjese que llovió tanto desde, de septiembre, octubre, noviembre, y, parte de diciembre, como nunca. Todos esos meses llueve y llueve. MP: ¿Sí? Y luego ahí, ¿se inundaron los campos? TZ: No, no, lloviznas, pero de esa que y luego el algodón que no necesitaban uno piscar lo que estuviera mojado pos no, nos salíamos a piscar. 2do: En esos días no trabaja uno. MP: Y por ejemplo cuando, cuando los llevaban a comprar las provisiones, no sé, ¿siempre les alcanzó?, ¿nunca se quedaron cortos de que tuvieron que pedir prestado? TZ: ¡No, sí! Todo el tiempo nos alcanzó. Nomás ese, digamos en esa temporada trabajábanos a veces una hora, dos. Pues unas veinte, treinta, ¿que será?, treinta libras, ¿verdad?, piscábanos. Este, y con el peso que nos daba él, pues sacábamos para comida. En aquél entonces eran $7 dólares y digamos de lo que traía uno de dispensa. Sí, con eso teníanos, $7 pesos cada uno. MP: Y luego para su familia, ¿le mandaba usted dinero a su familia? TZ: Eh, pues cuando había, sí. Por ejemplo, esa vez yo no mandé porque pos era, $40 dólares. MP: Ajá, ni para usted. TZ: No, pos ahí los traía. MP: Y, ¿sí le llegaba todo el dinero a su familia?, ¿nunca se entero de que no le llegó? TZ: ¡No!, no, sí todo el tiempo que mandé yo después que fui, sí le llegaba. Es que le dan a uno su taloncito allá del…le daba uno el dinero al ranchero. Y luego el ranchero iba y depositaba, ya nomás le llegaba la contraseña y ya. Para en caso de perdido, pérdida pues reclamaba uno, pero no, nunca se me perdió a mí. MP: Qué bueno y ahí ustedes, ¿tenían servicio médico? TZ: Sí, tenía servicio médico. MP: Y, nunca le tocó que lo hayan llevado al hospital o alguien de… TZ: ¡No! MP: ¿De sus compañeros? TZ: A mí no, a lo mejor y alguna, alguna vez eh, sí, ahí los compañeros sí, pos ya digamos, se sentían malos… Sí, me acuerdo que sí, sí los llevaba el ranchero también, al médico. Pero yo a mí no me acuerdo de las veces que fui, nunca necesité el médico. Me tocó hasta suerte. MP: Qué bueno, y, ¿dónde más anduvo?, aparte de Nuevo México. MP: Y, ¿a ustedes cuáles les convenía más? TZ: El de mayo porque salía poquito mejorcito. MP: Y en diciembre, ¿el ranchero también les proporcionaba un, no sé, ropa especial, o algo por si estaba lloviendo mucho o nevando o frio? TZ: ¡Ropa no! Lo que nos daba era para trabajar, digamos, el costal del algodón, ¿verdad? Nos los colgábamos ahí, de aquí a la puerta aquella... Eso es lo que nos daba. MP: Y entonces, era todo lo que les daba de… TZ: De implemento de trabajo. MP: Y ustedes, porque imagi[no], la mata de algodón es muy espinosa, ¿no? TZ: Tiene cuatro piquitos. MP: Y luego con los dedos, me imagino que se siente mal, ¿no? TZ: ¡No! Pos ya decía, aprende uno a agarrarle, digamos a este, cuando anda uno fuerte, pues sí le tira el agarrón a las eh, a los capullos, pues sí le pica. Pero después se impone uno, digamos en, saca el algodón fácil. Sí, un que otro, otra vez le, no le daba uno bien, digamos, sí le picaba, pero no, no era mucho. MP: Y, ¿en dónde más anduvo? TZ: En el estado de Montana me tocó a mí. También ir a allá al betabel también. MP: Y, ¿era el mismo pago? TZ: El mismo pago. De $12 dólares por acre y… MP: Y, ¿cómo le hizo?, ¿en qué lo transportaron hasta allá? TZ: En camión. MP: Y, ¿cuánto tiempo hizo? TZ: ¡Uh! Desde ahí de El Paso a Colorado hizo dieciocho horas, casi ir al El Paso. No iba muy fuerte. Y luego de ahí nos, nos quedamos a, llegamos como a las once de la noche. Y otro día salimos como a las cinco de la mañana llegamos allá, pos no me acuerdo sí serían las doce, una de la mañana. En Montana, pero otro día. MP: O sea que fácil hacía como unos tres días. TZ: Como treinta y seis horas, yo creo. MP: Mucho tiempo, ¿no? TZ: Ta muy lejos, sí, muy lejos. MP: Y ahí en Montana pues era, es más frío, ¿no? ¡Más húmedo! TZ: Más húmedo, sí. MP: Y, ¿sí estaba más o menos las casitas acondicionadas para el tiempo de frío que, casas así… TZ: Eh, sí, sí, que eran casitas más o menos bien. MP: O sea que ustedes no sufrían por el clima. TZ: Pos me gustó más el terreno por ejemplo allá en el estado de Montana, taba muy bonito, estaba. Había mucho agua, en estos meses ya llueve mucho allá. Y allí, escribíanos, ¡y seco y seco y seco así! MP: ¿Y los animales?, que víboras o algo, ¿no? ¿No tuvo ningún inconveniente con eso? TZ: No, no. MP: Y, ¿a usted nunca le dió por arreglar papeles y quedarse ahí en Estados Unidos? TZ: Pues no, fíjese que, como había contratación íbanos dos veces por año, ¿pues para qué? Y ya se iba a cerrar la contratación, entonces, un día antes me había dicho el gabacho. Ya me conocía, dijo: “Oyes, ¿tú quieres contrato grande? Porque el que tengo… Se llamaba Hilario, dijo: “No, ya no viene”, dijo. Ya se va a cerrar la contratación y no va a venir, sí le dije sí. No, pos otro día digamos llegó el Hilario, no ya no me volvió a decir nada. No, dije: “¡Yo me voy pa México!”. Que fue yo creo en el [19]59 más o menos. MP: Y ya de ahí, ¿ya no se volvió a contratar ni nada? TZ: No, me vine, en diciembre me vine, digamos. Ya se acabó todo, pos me vine, dije: “Al cabo pal mayo otra vez”. MP: Y cuando se acabó ya el Programa Bracero, que se regresó a México, ¿fue difícil para usted volver a encontrar trabajo? TZ: ¿Aquí? MP: Sí. TZ: ¡No! Aquí había mucho algodón también. Hay nomás pa, se juntaba nosotros ahí en lo que es el Sáuz, Terrazas, había mucho algodón ahí. No, no, había mucho trabajo. No pos trabajo aquí, nomás que sí salía un poquito más allá, ¿verdad? Por eso iba uno. Eh, aquí también se ganaba. MP: Y cuénteme, para usted el Programa Bracero, ¿fue un buen programa?, ¿le faltó algo? TZ: Pues, para mí fue buen programa porque pues, ¡vivía uno!, digo. (risas) ¡Y trabajaba y vivía!, pues fue buen programa, ¿qué otra cosa puede pedir uno? Que haya trabajo nada más, ¿verdad?, para poder vivir. MP: Claro. TZ: No, fue buen, buen programa. MP: Y, ¿en cuánto al pago?, ¿está un poco bajado? TZ: Pues, estaba poco bajo, pero de todos modos iba uno a trabajar, ya le digo, siempre salía poquito mejor que aquí. Summary of Interview: Aida and Tula recall their time working as typists at a bracero processing center in Hidalgo, Texas, during the 1950s; they initially learned about the job through word of mouth; upon being hired, they were contracted with the federal government, and given government classifications; although there were different shifts because the center was open twenty-four hours a day, they worked the morning shift, which lasted eight hours; the girls were allowed to take brakes, and they often brought a sack lunch; the braceros were brought into the center, which was a huge warehouse, and they were taken into holding rooms; they were then brought into a big hall and grouped according to where they came from so that they could stand in line and wait for their information to be taken at the screening station where the girls worked; the braceros would hand a paper to the girls, and they would ask basic biographical questions and type out the answers; the girls would then hand the paper back to the workers so they could take it to the next station; oftentimes, the girls would get bored of asking the same questions, and they would ask about the men’s scars or wives to break the monotony; although the girls never saw much of what happened beyond their station, they had heard about the braceros being fumigated; the girls also mention that their uncle had a store downtown, which was often frequented by braceros.
