Cuando su padre falleció en 1949, él y su familia se mudaron a Chihuahua, Chihuahua, se convirtió en bracero en 1952 a la edad de veintisiete años; trabajó en Colorado, Texas, Nuevo México y Utah. Entrevista con el señor Herminio Quezada Durán, entrevistando para el Departamento de Historia Oral de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, Myrna Parra Mantilla. MP: Buenos días, señor Quezada. HQ: Buenos días. MP: Le agradezco que haya aceptado esta entrevista para el Departamento de Historia Oral de El Paso, Texas. Primero me gustaría preguntarle, ¿dónde y cuándo nació? HQ: Nací el día 15 de marzo de 1925. MP: ¿En dónde? HQ: En San José del Sitio, municipio de Satevó. MP: ¿Aquí en Chihuahua? HQ: Aquí en Chihuahua, municipio de Satevó, Chihuahua. MP: Me podría hablar un poco de su familia y de cómo fue su niñez y, ¿sus padres a qué se dedicaban, sus hermanos? HQ: Pues éramos agricultores, en el rancho, todos ellos, muy bien, todo el tiempo. MP: ¿Cuántos hermanos tuvo? HQ: Éramos, nueve, siete hombres y dos mujeres. No, siete hombres y tres mujeres. MP: ¿Cuándo empezó a trabajar usted? HQ: Tenía como dieciséis años cuando empecé a trabajar allá en el rancho. Pos todo el tiempo trabajábanos en la agricultora y luego ya nos trabajábanos por ahí con los ranchos, los ranchos ganaderos, en presones, así todo. MP: Y, ¿usted cómo se dio cuenta del Programa Bracero? HQ: Pos es que ya vivíanos aquí. MP: En Chihuahua. HQ: Aquí en Chihuahua. Nos venimos de allá ya en el [19]49 y el [19]50 empezaron las contrataciones. Nomás que yo empecé el [19]52, ahí de bracero. MP: Y entonces, ¿usted se dio cuenta, o sea de gente que ya había ido allá?, o, ¿vio algún anuncio en la calle? HQ: No pos es que, como ya vivíanos aquí, empezaron a decir de los braceros y todo. Y empezaron con que iban a dar números, hasta que sacábanos el número, iban a sacarnos el número pa ya con el número ya, nomás tábanos esperando que se llegara el número, para venir a contratarnos aquí, en la, en El Trocadero le decían. MP: ¿Era el lugar que le decían El Trocadero? HQ: El Trocadero, ahí era donde eran las contrataciones. MP: Y, ¿usted cómo le hizo? Bueno, usted estaba aquí en Chihuahua, ¿verdad?, y vino aquí al centro y, ¿ahí le pidieron alguna documentación o cómo le hizo para que se lo llevaran? HQ: Sí, sí, presentaba uno los papeles, la cartilla, todo eso, le pedían la cartilla a uno para pa poder entrar ahí y del número, le llegaba el número y luego presentaban los papeles y ellos lo llevaban a uno hasta, hasta el Río Vista. MP: Y luego, ¿había mucha gente? Usted se acuerda que venía mucha gente de otras partes de… HQ: De todas partes, de todo el país, yo creo, de todo el estado y de los, de todo el país, aquí pos México, de donde quiera, de todas partes, mucha gente se juntaba de todas partes. MP: Y aquí, ¿dónde estaba toda esa gente o cómo le hacía para esperar el turno del número, mientras le tocaba? HQ: Pues muchos, taban esperando y estaban saliendo y venían, pero todo el tiempo estaba lleno de gente ahí, ahí mismo se quedaban ahí, ahí mismo adormían y todo. Muchos en los hoteles y se llenaban los hoteles y muchos se quedaban ahí mismo. MP: Y aquí había, ¿les hacían algún examen así médico a ver cómo estaban de salud, a ver si estaban fuertes? HQ: Sí de, de todos, de todo le hacían a uno examen, de todo, sí de todo le hacían exámenes, general. MP: Y después cuando los contrataban aquí, ¿firmaban ustedes un contrato aquí?, o, ¿se los llevaban?, a la casa me imagino que se los llevaban. HQ: Sí, pos aquí firmaba papeles también y luego se lo llevaban y allá firmaba, allá también firmaba uno en el Río Vista. MP: Y luego, ¿en qué los transportaban cuando se los llevaban de aquí a El Paso, llegaban?, ¿verdad? HQ: Sí. MP: ¿En qué se iban? HQ: En el tren. En el tren nos tocó ir, de aquí nomás en tren pa salir a todo el… Cada vez que había braceros, que contrataban, en tren lo mandaban a uno hasta allá hasta El Paso. Hasta el Río, hasta Juárez, pero de ahí se lo llevaban a uno en camiones, sí. MP: ¿Qué edad tenía cuando se fue? HQ: Allá en, ¿en ese entonces? MP: Ajá. HQ: Jue el [19]50, el [19]52 tenía, veintisiete años. MP: ¿Ya estaba casado? HQ: ¡No! MP: ¿Estaba soltero? HQ: Estaba soltero. MP: Y, ¿qué le dijeron sus papás de que se iba a ir? HQ: No, ¿qué? MP: ¿Sus papás qué le dijeron o su familia qué le dijeron porque se iba a ir de bracero? HQ: Pos mi papá murió en el [19]49, nomás mi mamá, mi mamá es la que quedaba ahí, a hacer la de la aquí estábanos todavía. No, nomás le avisábanos: “Ya nos vamos”. MP: ¿Se fue alguien más de su familia con usted o usted se fue solo? HQ: ¿Mande? MP: ¿Alguien más de su familia se fue, algún hermano? HQ: Sí, hermanos también, como dos hermanos más fueron, también a, de braceros, nomás que uno ya murió, ahorita uno está allá en los Estados Unidos, arregló residencia. MP: Y luego cuando llegaron ahí a El Paso, ¿usted se acuerda dónde estaba o por dónde pasaba?, ¿pasaban así por las garitas que hay para que cruzara la gente normalmente?, o, ¿tenían algún puesto especial ahí los de Migración nada más para los puros braceros? HQ: Tenían un, de primero, era un, ahí en el puro [El] Paso, ¿cómo le decían?, el, no me acuerdo cómo le decían ahí, ahí era onde contrataban. Y ya después cambiaron al Río Vista. Allá lo llevaban a uno pero de primero ahí lo, lo, ya nomás que no me acuerdo cómo se llamaba la parte esa dónde contrataban de primero ahí nomás pasando El Paso. MP: Y entonces como quien dice, Fort Bliss, ¿no? HQ: Ándale ahí en Fort Bliss. MP: Y, ¿cómo era ahí en el Fort Bliss? HQ: No. MP: ¿También ahí les hacían exámenes médicos? HQ: También. MP: ¿Ahí se quedaban a dormir o qué? HQ: ¡No, no! Ahí, ahí nos, ahí no, lo mandaban, ya arreglaron y lo iban mandando a uno, ya cuando arreglaba ya estaban los camiones ya lo llevaban a uno pa tal parte onde que, le tocaba. MP: Y, ¿les ponían no sé algo para si traían animales? HQ: Sí, polvo. MP: ¿Sí? HQ: Echaban un polvo ahí pal piojo. (risas) MP: Y, ¿luego si traían, ya con eso se les quitaban? HQ: Sí ya se les quitaba, enteritos. MP: O si están muy enterrados, ¿los mandaban otra vez para México? HQ: Sí, pos yo creo muchos sí porque los que estábanos aquí cerquitas, no. Pero muchos duraban hasta quince, veinte días o un mes sin, sin cambiarse. MP: ¡Ah, caray! HQ: Y aquí no, aquí se cambiaba uno y luego llegaba allá pues no. MP: Limpiecito. HQ: No, no, limpio. MP: Y luego, entonces ya se juntaban todos ahí en Fort Bliss, ¿verdad? HQ: Sí. MP: Y luego, ¿dice que los pasaban a Río Vista? HQ: No, de ahí, de ahí lo mandaban y ya después cambiaron a Río Vista. MP: ¡Ah, okay! O sea primero fue la concentración ahí en Fort Bliss. HQ: En Fort Bliss y luego uno, yo me tocó un año nomás. MP: Ah. HQ: Ya lo demás nos tocó en Río Vista. MP: ¡Ah! HQ: Ahí tenían todo muy grande en un local muy grande ahí, muchas oficinas y todo. MP: Y médicos y enfermeras. HQ: Médico y todo ahí, y ahí y ahí lo arreglaba uno ahí también, ahí también nos daban los mismos exámenes le hacían a uno y todo y le echaban polvo, polvo le echaban todo el tiempo. Y ahí ya de ahí salía y contrataban. Ya llegaban los camiones y vamos pa onde le tocaba. MP: Y a ustedes cuando les hacían el examen médico, ¿no les daban algún certificado o una información de cómo estaban? HQ: No, ponían ahí en los papeles. MP: ¿Ustedes no se daban cuenta de eso? HQ: No, no, no le decían a uno, ellos apuntaban ahí. No y el que, el que iba mal lo devolvían, ése no lo mandaban. MP: Y por ejemplo los que venían aquí desde el sur de México, ¿a regresarlos hasta allá?, o, ¿se quedaban ya aquí? HQ: Pos muchos se quedaban aquí, muchos se regresaban. Porque muchos no, no lo, no lo pasaban, los devolvían. MP: Y luego, ¿cómo le hacía toda esa gente porque ellos pagaban por venir aquí o los traían? HQ: No, ellos pagaban de allá hasta aquí, de aquí pagaban a donde, donde está aquí la contratación para allá no pagaba uno nada, lo llevaban ellos de su cuenta. De aquí ya lo llevaban en el tren a uno, llegaba allá y luego ya de ahí lo llevaban al Río Vista y ahí lo contrataban y estaban saliendo todos los que estaban contratando, estaban saliendo. Ahí pa tal parte, pa, pa todas partes. MP: Y la primera vez que usted se fue, ¿a qué estado se fue? HQ: La primera vez que me fui me, me tocó en, no me acuerdo ónde, ónde me tocó la primera vez. Creo que a Plainview. MP: ¿En qué estado? HQ: De Texas. MP: ¿Texas? HQ: Sí. Anduve en muchos estados ahí de Texas, ya allá al último nos llevaron allá pa otra, pa los estados del centro. MP: Y, ¿era la primera vez de usted en Estados Unidos o ya había cruzado como mojado? HQ: De mojado ya hasta el [19]49 de mojado, sí. MP: Y cuando llegó usted, ¿fue un rancho al lugar dónde llegó, o fue una fábrica o en donde trabajó usted? HQ: Ah, ¿de contratado? MP: Ajá. HQ: No, a un rancho. MP: Un rancho. HQ: A los ranchos lo llevaban a uno. MP: Y, ¿cómo era el rancho, cómo era el patrón? HQ: No, muy buenas gentes todos, a mí nunca, yo no tuve problemas con nadie, todo el tiempo muy a gusto con todos. Iba nomás a trabajar ahí no, nunca, ni un problema con ellos. MP: Y, ¿ahí de Fort Bliss ustedes ya sabían a dónde iban a ir? HQ: Sí, ya de ahí lo llevaban a uno a tal parte, ya le decían ahí. Y yo nomás una en una temporada ahí estuve y ahí me tocó, nomás ahí me tocó en el, en el valle de El Paso, la primer vez. Y ya después en, en Fort Bliss. MP: Y luego el transporte o bueno, ¿venía el ranchero acá por ustedes a Fort Bliss?, o, ¿mandaba a alguien el ranchero o cómo se los llevaba? HQ: Sí, ellos venían en, en, se lo llevaban a uno en las, en las, tenían trocas, venían así ellos venían y los rancheros ya se lo llevaban a uno pal rancho. MP: Y los rancheros ahí los escogían a ustedes o, ¿cómo era la selección que hacía el ranchero? HQ: Sí, pues este, yo el, allá ya, ahí le, le decían: “¿Quieren irse pa allá?,o, ¿quieren irse pa este lado?”. MP: Y entonces ustedes escogían. HQ: Escogíamos y ya en el Río Vista no, ahí en el Río Vista, que estaban saliendo pa, pa Pecos, y no quería entrar la gente y luego que, que va, pa Colorado, y se amontonaba la gente que le tocaba, porque ese Pecos tenía, era, metían mucha gente en Pecos, no quería ir la gente pa Pecos. Yo jui, me echaron dos veces a juerza, porque no querían ir nadie, decía: “No tiene que ir a éste”. Quería uno pa los estados del centro, o para, y en Pecos pues metían mucha, mucha gente. MP: Pero no era porque los trataban mal ahí, ¿no? HQ: No, no, a mí, bueno, yo pos nunca tuve, a mí dos veces me llevaron a Pecos, pero nomás eso, eso lo que tenía que, metían mucha gente, entonces unas tierras muy largas, metían setenta, ochenta, alcanzaba yo nomás, no quería ir uno así lejos porque, sí agarraba un sur[co], uno, una parte aquí, caminaba como unos dos, tres kilómetros para ir a agarrar otro surco. MP: Estaban muy grandes. HQ: Muy grandes, pues era mucha gente. Pues todo el surco, por surco, caminaba uno así mucho para, onde agarraba uno ya para ir cuando agarraba el otro surco ya llevaba como un kilómetro. Y por eso la gente no quería ir, metían mucha gente y luego luego se acababa y en otras partes no, metían pocos y duraba uno mucho ahí. MP: Y ahí donde llegó a ese rancho, ¿qué fue lo que hizo usted?, ¿piscando qué o qué? HQ: Algodón. MP: Y, ¿era muy grande ese rancho? HQ: Sí, era muy grande el rancho, muy grande. MP: Y, ¿en dónde? ¿Tenían un lugar especial para que ustedes durmieran ahí? HQ: Sí teníamos. MP: ¿Había camas?, estaba muy bien acondicionado. HQ: No, sí, taban las barracas grandes, estábamos ahí, cuartos chicos, onde quería uno, no, sí, sí, sí taba más o menos, a mí no me tocó tanto y me tocó bien. Y pos cama y todo iban a, todo tenían ahí, estufa y todo, de a dos, tres, hijo, nos juntaban de a dos, tres. MP: Y luego la comida, ¿cómo le hacía para la comida? HQ: Pos nosotros la hacíamos. MP: ¿Ustedes? HQ: Sí a la hora que, de a tiro nos citaba el viejo a onde íbanos a piscar, llevábanos lonche y si no, veníamos a comer ahí, hasta tenía, ahí teníamos todo. Y nos proporcionaban, tiendas allá para onde irlas a sacar, tiendas pal lonche. MP: Y cuándo se fueron ustedes, ¿les permitían llevar, no sé, cambios de ropa, cobijas, almohada, zapatos a donde iban? HQ: No, no, a nosotros allá nos ponían ellos, nomás llevábamos ropa, traías un cambio o dos, ya después, trabajaba una semana y compraba uno. Porque pa ir cargando pa allá, no, no, ni cobijas ni nada, le digo, le proporcionaban a uno todo. MP: Y ya estando allá, la familia del ranchero, ¿cómo era con ustedes?, o, ¿tenían así contacto? HQ: No, casi no, no, no, no. En, en este, a ellos casi no, a mí no me tocó estar en ranchos onde, onde había patrones, mi patrón vivía en el pueblo y él iba al ran[cho], allá al rancho, ahí onde trabajé yo taba muy a gusto, porque el señor este, tenía el rancho solo. Él vivía en el pueblo allá, tenía, tábanos dos, duramos siete años ahí, cinco años juntos dos. Y luego ya se, se vino él y ya me quedé yo en otro, me, con todo y contrato me mandaron pa otra parte. Y luego ya, ya cuando me venía, me habían traído otra carta de otro patrón y me, duré dos años con él también. MP: Y entonces, pero todos esos cinco años, ¿usted hizo contrato con el patrón por esos cinco años? HQ: No, es que mire, estaban así, nos íbanos contratados el primer año y si el patrón le gustaba el jale, el trabajo de uno, le renovaba, le renovaba, duraba uno dieciocho meses. Hasta los dieciocho meses iban, les renovaban en cada, sería cada dos, tres meses ya no me acuerdo. Pero yo cuando, pa los dieciocho meses, duraba dieciocho meses y venían uno a contratarse. Y entonces el patrón ya sabía más o menos en qué tiempo, ellos sabían todo, en qué tiempo lo mandaban a uno pa que se viniera a, a contratar otra vez y luego duraba dieciocho meses otra vez. Y luego lo echaba otra vez cuando se llegaba la contratación y venía uno y se contrataba otra vez, y ahí va uno pa allá, lo, lo despachaban primero para otra parte. A los estados del centro cuarenta y cinco días y luego ya venían, le daba carta el patrón y nos íbamos pa allá. MP: Ah, ¿sí? HQ: Cumplía los cuarenta y cinco días allá, en otro rancho, en otro estado, sería del betabel o sea de, así del desahije y todo. Entonces cumplía los cuarenta y cinco días se venía y luego traía uno carta y se iba pal, pa allá onde estaba en Brownfield, cinco años que duraba ahí de… así lo hacían. MP: O sea que los mismos rancheros, ¿como que se prestaban? HQ: Sí, también lo prestaban a uno, se le acababa a él el trabajo, entonces si a él se le acababa el trabajo, lo prestaban a uno con otro. Iba y lo ayudaba a echar la mano a otro y luego se venía otra vez, al rancho. MP: Y luego si a usted le gustaba mejor el otro patrón que el que tenía, ¿se podía quedar con el otro o de todas maneras? HQ: Pues muchos sí se cambiaban, muchos. Yo nunca me cambié. Yo me cambié al último porque este, yo me fui, a La Junta cuando él me mandó a conseguir una carta del otro patrón y ya me cambié, dos meses, dos, dos años en la, con otro, con otro. Y el otro patrón me, me decía que, es que había un mayordomo ahí y ese no, pos no, no, no la llevábamos bien. Y luego yo me cambié y luego me dijo el patrón que si quería venirme otra vez. “No”, le dije, “no, yo pa allá no”, le dije. Y luego me consiguió otra, otra carta y me dejó con el otro patrón. Porque allá en, de muchos tiempos ya conocía uno la gente ahí y luego ya, yo le avisaba al patrón dónde, yo le escribí del, de La Junta, Colorado. Estaba un muchacho ahí y luego me dice el muchacho me, le escribía a él y luego le escribió y me dijo el patrón que si quería venirme con él, le dije: “No mientras que esté ese mayordomo, no, no, oigo”, le dije. Porque era muy, muy mentiroso, muy este, mala gente y como estaba poco, poco destrampado por lo que, por la guerra, que anduvo en la guerra!, dice que anduvo antes en la guerra y se, se destrampó, muchos se destramparon de la guerra, que anduvieron allá en la guerra. MP: Y, ¿usted no tenía problemas con ellos? HQ: No, no, nosotros no le hacíanos caso. Había veces que hasta nos asustaba. Venía así por las tierras y pegaba unos gritotes onde, yo creo se le afiguraba que andaba allá en la guerra y me decía: “No ya no”. No, pero no, no, no me decía nada nomás que, que sí era este, se destrampaba en ratos. Nosotros andábamos, éramos, le digo que ese muchacho y yo duramos, cinco años ahí, los dos juntos todo el tiempo. MP: Y, ¿el ranchero les proporcionaba la herramienta para trabajar? HQ: Todo, todo. MP: O, ¿un vestido, botas especiales? HQ: Todo, todo nos daba él, muy buen patrón. Pos por eso con un patrón ya dura uno y si a él le gusta el trabajo, también. MP: Y, ¿cómo era un día de trabajo allá? Desde que se despertaban hasta que se acostaban. ¿Cómo era allá? HQ: Sí, no, no, pos andaba uno a la, fueran las horas, las horas del…Se agarraba una hora sí, uno a las ocho, salía alguien a comer a la una y luego se va otra vez, en los riegos también. Nomás ir a cambiar los riegos, andar uno ahí, en la pisca, en mapeo, ya había cuando taba puro, trabajar. Y los patrones también pos ellos saben quién trabaja. Nosotros, este muchacho y yo estábamos muy a gusto y todo porque nos la llevábanos muy bien, en todo, nos ayudábamos muy bien en todo y ya le digo que duramos cinco años ahí juntos. MP: Y luego cuando andaban en el campo, me decía que son muy grandes, en el campo, ¿llevaban ustedes su lonche para tener ahí un descansito? HQ: Sí, llevábamos lonches, llevábamos lonches cuando íbamos así, lonches o veníanos a comer en las trocas, hasta así en troca, muebles, pa venir a comer a la casa. MP: Y también había mujeres, ¿verdad?, en el algodón o, ¿eran puros hombres? HQ: No, en el algodón sí había mujeres. MP: Y, ¿usted se acuerda de haber sabido de alguna mujer que se fue de bracero, de aquí de México? HQ: ¿De mojada? MP: Ajá. HQ: No, oiga, no. MP: O, ¿de bracera? HQ: No, no, no me acuerdo de bracero. No, irían ahí de mojadas, yo creo, no sé pero eran de ahí mismo, porque iban a la pisca de ahí mismo de los, de los texanos de allá, de la gente de allá. MP: ¿Por qué? ¿Era como requisito en el contrato, o sea, que puros hombres se contrataban? HQ: No, no, no eran, pos iban nomás puros hombres pero como los de ahí iban a esos, van a trabajar onde quiera, ellos van a piscar a onde haiga pisca, onde les den. O ya tienen sus, o ya tienen los patrones también ellos. Pa ir al rancho ése a piscar, ahí iban mujeres también, nosotros andábamos piscando onde había mujeres. MP: Y, ¿usted se dio cuenta de algún bracero que se llevó a su esposa?, o sea que se fue la pareja. HQ: No, no, no. No, nosotros, a nosotros nos tocó ahí solos en el puro rancho, nomás el mayordomo y la familia de él, pero otra gente no, no tocó, de ir, pos iba gente pero de, de así de pero, serán de ahí, serían de ahí, nunca supimos nosotros que, que eran mojadas. O que eran de que se iban a trabajar ahí sin papeles. MP: Y por ejemplo si unos de los braceros, no sé, ¿se dio cuenta usted de alguien que tuvo familia allá o algo? HQ: Pos había unos que se quedaban allá, con mujeres pero más muchas, sabían ahí que hacían uno amistad y que se casaban allá. Y aquí nada menos hace poco que taba uno que se quedó allá desde entonces de bracero y nomás que ya se le murió que un hermano. Y luego se vino y luego pos se pegó y se murió él. MP: ¿Sí? HQ: Sí. MP: Y luego estando allá nunca a la hora de que les pagaba el ranchero, ¿nunca tuvieron problemas en cuanto que les pagaran de menos? HQ: No, no, ese patrón que tuvimos nosotros, con los dos patrones, muy legales, no, nunca batallamos con nada, ni, ni en, ni averiguar ni nada, nunca, muy buena gente. Él andaba, nomás iba a darnos vuelta, nunca nos quedó debiendo ni un cinco ni nada, ni batallábanos con él, al mero hora iba y nos pagaba. MP: Y, ¿cuánto les pagaba? HQ: Pues a según lo que gana, lo que ganaba uno, a lo, pos había veces que nos pagaba, nomás que casi no me acuerdo cómo nos pagaba la hora, pero había veces que sacaba hasta $60 dólares por semana, cambiando líneas y así en el riego y todo, me pagaba por hora, nomás que no me acuerdo más o menos ahorita cuánto pagaba pero en la pisca también muy, muy legal. A mí me gustó mucho el mapeo ése, yo piscaba hasta mil libras de mapeo. ¿Sí sabe cuál es el mapeo? MP: ¿El algodón? HQ: El puro capullo del algodón, así con to y todo así. MP: Pero era muy espinoso, ¿no? HQ: No, no, taba, taba medio así, no, ahí usaba uno guante y yo llegué a piscar mil, mil libras de mapeo, piscaba yo mil libras de mapeo. MP: Pues era muy bueno usted. HQ: Y en el limpio, el limpio piscaba doscientos cincuenta. MP: ¡Ah, caray! HQ: Y en, en el mapeo sí piscaba mil libras. Hasta mil ochenta llegué a llegar. MP: Pues entonces sí le pagaba bien, ¿no? Cuando tenía duda iba y nosotros, iba y nos traía por nosotros venía y nos llevaba, hasta ponerlo, pa que si en alguna cosa iba mal, él iba y nos traía hasta pa no ir y como estaba cerca del rancho, yo estaba en el pueblo. MP: Ah, okay. HQ: En el, dos años que duré en ese rancho ahí cerquita del pueblo, en la pura orilla. El otro, en el otro que duré cinco años, taba poquito más retiradito. MP: Y entonces, ¿sí tenía más o menos comunicación con su familia? HQ: Sí, ta, sí, hasta, hasta le escribían, ahí luego le, a nosotros les mandaban y luego nos contestaban: “Ya llegó el dinero”. A los ocho, quince días nos mandaba la contestada. MP: Y, ¿qué le mandaba decir su familia, que ya se regresara? HQ: Que ya, que ya… MP: O, ¿querían que los llevara con usted allá? HQ: No, ellos nos contestaban luego luego que ya había llegado el dinero. MP: Y, ¿le dio esa enfermedad por el tipo de trabajo que hacía ahí? HQ: Pos no, es que siempre cargo inflamación de los bronquios, es el único que me enfermé yo allá, ni un accidente ni nada, nomás en los bronquios y yo hasta pensaba que me iba a dar, porque batallaba pa respirar. Y no y viene y no, le decía al este: “Ve, tráeme al doctor”, me traiba a La Asociación y no me, no me daban pastillas. No, hasta que, me vine, me vine curando aquí y luego luego se me quitó. La, con el doctor unos aparatos que me pusieron me costaron $100 pesos y las medicina $7 pesos y jamás me volvió a dar. MP: Ah, pues qué bueno. Oiga y a propósito, diversiones, ¿cómo se divertían allá? ¿Tenían algún día de descanso? HQ: Sí, todo, en domingo nos veníamos el domingo al pueblo, al cine ahí, sí, todo el día estábanos en el pueblo el domingo y en la tarde venía y nos llevaba. MP: ¿Ellos iban y los llevaban? HQ: Él nos iba y nos llevaba, venían, nos dejaban en, nos llevaban al mandado a la tienda y luego ya nos llevaba al mandado y de ahí nos dejaba en el pueblo y luego en la tarde venía por nosotros. MP: Entonces ustedes compraban lo que ustedes querían, ¿verdad? HQ: Nosotros lo que queríamos, sí. Nos llevaba a la tienda y taba una tienda cerca, una, ¿cómo le dicen?, una tienda grande, marqueta, ¿cómo le dicen? MP: ¿Comercial o un mall? HQ: No, no, una, está una tienda muy grande. Y ahí nos llevaba, ahí ta cercas, como unos dos, tres kilómetros y nos llevaba a traer el mandado y luego ya le decíamos: “Ahora ya llévanos al pueblo”. Iba y nos dejaba y en la tarde nos traía, sí. MP: Y luego, ¿en qué otros estados anduvo por allá? HQ: Allá en, de los Dakota, los Dakota nos mandaban a Michigan. Yo fui dos veces. O sea los Dakota, Minnesota son, están pegados los estados. Y ahí ya fui y me caí primero no me acuerdo si en North Dakota y luego ya de ahí me mandaron a Michigan. MP: Y ahí en Dakota, ¿qué estuvo haciendo? HQ: ¿En North Dakota? MP: Ajá. HQ: En el, en el desahije del betabel. MP: Y, ¿en Michigan también? HQ: En Michigan el pepino. MP: Ah, pepino. HQ: Ey. MP: Y, ¿cómo le fue allá con el frío? HQ: ¿Allá? MP: O, ¿del ranchero con el que iban a trabajar? HQ: Con el que íbanos a trabajar. Lo que cuando acabábanos un contrato acá en North Dakota, veníanos, una vez nos llevaron en el avión hasta Michigan. Fíjese, que ni, pos nos llevaron hasta allá y ahí nos recogieron los otros patrones. MP: Y, ¿nunca tuvo problemas con nadie? HQ: Con nadie, gracias a Dios que no. MP: ¿Ni con La Migra? HQ: Nada, nada, con nadie no, no, yo nunca me metía con nadie, ni nunca, yo no tuve problemas con nadie, ni en, que dijera, por borracheras nunca caí en la cárcel ni nada, nunca caí en nada, ni pleitos, ni nada con nadie. Nosotros veníanos nomás los domingos, veníanos y nos íbanos, sí. MP: Y por ejemplo de racismo porque ya ve que se dio mucho con los negros, ¿no? HQ: Sí. MP: ¿Ustedes no tuvieron así mucho problema? HQ: No, no, nosotros no. MP: O, ¿alguien que usted haya sabido que sí tuvo problemas por…? HQ: No, no, no, ahí nosotros, yo le digo que ahí nosotros no, no, a mí no me tocó casi nunca, mas que en Pecos, estar entre muchos. Pos había pleitos entre de, con los de Chihuahua, con, con los de allá en otro, pero ellos allá, ellos allá. Yo no, nosotros nunca, yo nunca me metí con nadie, de decirle, que yo me pelié, nunca, yo nunca, con nadie, ni de buscar ni nada. Yo, yo he sido tranquilo todo el tiempo y aquí caí al comandancia, pero yo porque me, me echaba unas copas, me quedaba dormido en la, (risas) en las bancas y ahí me levantaban, pero no, pero dificultades no. MP: Y luego, ¿cada cuándo venía acá a visitar a su familia? HQ: Pues a veces que veníanos a los cuatro, cinco meses. MP: Ah, o sea, ¿sí venía? HQ: Sí veníanos, una vez sí, nomás duré nueve meses pa venir. Pero todo el tiempo veníanos a los tres, cuatro meses, cuando estaban ahí de que duraban en Brownfield, seguido venían, acabábamos este, ¡nos mandaba aquí hasta un mes, estábamos un mes y en aquello de, hasta en, de marzo, en marzo que, que empezábanos el riego otra vez. MP: Y, ¿no tenían problemas para volver a pasar? HQ: No, no, tráibanos este, una, la tarjeta del, del patrón y todo, onde, onde, tráibanos pa poder pasar, permiso. Nos daban un permiso, de tantos días, un mes, quince días, un mes. Cuando quería uno, pedía: “Yo quiero ir, que me den permiso para ir a ver a mi familia. Tengo enfermo”. “¿Cuántos días quieres?”. “Pos tantos”. Si se pasaba, no había borlote, nomás lo presentaba uno y ya. Entonces sí pagaba uno, pero ellos cuando lo fechaban, no, nos lo ponían hasta aquí. MP: Ah, sí. HQ: Le daban el pasaje hasta aquí. MP: Y luego, ¿cómo le hacía para volverse a ir? ¿Tenía que volver a hacer cola para el proceso? HQ: Sí, otro contratos, otro contrato. MP: Y, ¿también vacunas? HQ: Todo, todo, todo cada vez que tenía que ir a contratar, tenía que ir vacunado, bien de todo, bien checado y todo. MP: Y luego, ¿después a dónde se fue? HQ: Pues yo me fui a, alguna vez, estuve en muchas partes, sí estuve en, venía a, me iba a, me despacharon, a La Junta, Colorado me despacharon una vez también. Y ahí duré. No me querían dejar venir. No, yo me venía y ya podía, yo ya tenía conocencia allá en el pueblo ése y entonces ya, yo llegaba al Río Vista y nomás presentaba la carta y me mandaban pa allá otra vez. Nomás que tenía que cumplir los cuarenta y cinco días en, onde lo mandaban a uno. Una vez me mandaron a Montana, otra vez a La Junta, Colorado. A Pecos nos echaban. No le digo que ya ahí, ahí nos, onde quiera que mandaban, me, me iba ya nomás cumplía el contrato y ya de ahí me iba otra vez pa Brownfield. MP: Y, ¿ahí en Colorado qué estuvo haciendo? HQ: Andábamos en la papa y la cebolla. MP: Y, de todos los que anduvo, en todas las labores que anduvo haciendo, ¿cuál fue la más difícil, la que se le hizo más pesada? HQ: El desahije del betabel. MP: ¿Sí? HQ: Sí, muy pesado un azadoncito chiquito ahí, pero no. En los primeros días y no hay ni, y luego unos surcos muy largos, andar agachado así. Ya que se hinca uno y se sienta y luego agachado y así, un azadoncito, no, muchos dicen: “No, ése azadoncito qué”, pero nomás eran unos tres días, no halla uno ni cómo estar, hasta que se va haciendo, pero es muy pesado el betabel. MP: La espalda le dolía. HQ: Sí, no, la espalda y la cintura, sí, sí el betabel este, el algodón, no, oiga, el algodón no, se acomoda y luego le va ayudando el costal porque lo va deteniendo, entre más pesado esté, lo va deteniendo. MP: Y a usted por ejemplo, ¿no le dieron chanza de darle un mejor trabajo? HQ: No, pos es que cuando había el algodón, el algodón, cuando era la limpia, la limpia, cuando eran los riegos, los riegos y en todos, todo hacía uno ahí. Y cuando iban a traer nomás el betabel, nomás el desahije, acababa uno y se venía. En North Dakota nosotros cumplíamos el contrato del beta[bel], del betabel del desahije y luego cumplíanos con todo y era cuando nos mandaban a Michigan, al pepino, puro pepino, hasta que se acababa. MP: Y el grupo de braceros que iba, era según el número de braceros, ¿era muy variable o siempre nada más iban quince, veinte o grupos pequeños? HQ: Pues eran grupos que iban, grupos de todo, iban de, del sur, de donde quiera de todas partes el grupo. Desde Chihuahua, nos juntaban grupos de Chihuahua, de Durango, de Durango, de Chiapas de todo eso. MP: ¿O sea que procuraban ustedes juntarse con su misma gente? HQ: Con, con la gente de uno, sí. Cuando estaba aquí en, taban ellos también buscando compañeros, los grupos de puros de Oaxaca, de puro de ésta, de ésta de por allá y todo y muchos de aquí, procuraba uno los de Chihuahua. MP: Y, ¿entre estos grupos no había algún problemita o algo? HQ. No, pues entre ellos sí había, entre muchos sí había, había problemas entre ellos, pero así como le digo, nosotros, este muchacho y yo pos éramos del mismo pueblo, cinco años y iban muchos y a piscar pero, nosotros todo el tiempo andábamos juntos, nosotros nunca, como éramos del mismo pueblo y nacidos casi ahí junto, nunca tuvimos problemas, nomás que éste arregló residencia y yo no pude. MP: ¿Por qué no pudo? HQ: Porque fue cuando me, me vine y me cambié pal otro rancho y el otro rancho el otro patrón, pos por eso fue el disgusto, porque el otro me agarró mala idea y no, no me, no me ayudó, no, no le dijo al patrón. Y el patrón después nos dijo que, dijo que nos podía arreglar a los dos y entonces el otro patrón no, nomás al otro le echó la ayudada. Y entonces el otro patrón, le dije y luego luego me arregló, me sacó la carta y todo. Nomás que al último, no pude arreglar, no sé por qué, no, no, que me faltó una, una cosa nomás y ya no quise volver a ir, ya, ya tengo, ahí tenía yo la carta de, del Departamento de Trabajo de Washington. Pero en, entonces jue cuando se puso muy, muy difícil, el [19]64 que se acabó ya la bracereada y se puso medio difícil, a muchos porque, muchos no arreglamos. De cien arreglaba uno. MP: ¿Por qué? HQ: Porque necesitaba venir el patrón. Y yo no le dije nunca que viniera. Y cualquier cosita, cualquier cosita no, ya no, ya no, ya no le arreglaban a nadie, a nadie que fuimos ahí nomás decían: “Ahí está”. Nomás uno arregló, por cualquier cosita que fuera. MP: Y eso que me dice que se puso muy difícil cuando se acabó el programa, ¿a todos los mandaban para acá? HQ: A todos, a todos, sí. Todos nos echaban, nos echaban a todos. MP: ¿Hubo unos que se quedaron por ahí? HQ: Pos muchos, sí, todo el tiempo, no se acaba nunca el mojado allá, todo el tiempo hay, se pasan por onde quiera. Y entonces muchos pos sí se iban y muchos se iban de mojados también allá, había mucho mojado ahí, como ya conocen en ahí la gente, les dan trabajo. Pos yo no, me fui nomás el [19]49 de mojado, duré seis meses allí. MP: Y entonces ya de mojados, dice que todavía se iban para allá y, ¿se iban con los mismos rancheros? HQ: Sí muchos sí, muchos se iban con los mismos. MP: Y, ¿los seguía contratando el ranchero y todo? HQ: Pos allí muchos se iban de mojados, dicen que muchos sí, decían ahí que traían papeles pero, pos sabía uno que muchos se iban de mojados. Porque yo me, me tocó ver a uno, conocido de aquí llegaba de mojado, gente, ¿cómo la ve? Nosotros caminando, nosotros nos íbanos de mojados desde, desde ahí de, de a pie, desde el valle de El Paso, oiga, Porvenir, ¿sí conoce el Porvenir? MP: Sí, señor. I believe that little has been written about the relationships developed between Bracero hosting corporations and U.S. service providers, especially Hispanics (Mexican-Americans) in business. I am writing to make sure that the Bracero story is told in terms of its spin-offs, corporate ties and the impact of Bracero contracts in San Diego county. For example, Sunkist and avocado growers (also called associations) developed camps and facilities for Bracero workers in San Diego county to live in during the time they harvested and processed vegetables, avocados, oranges and lemons. The camps they developed would hold (by my recollection) 25 to 300 workers each. Relatively large camps were located in Fallbrook, Vista and Escondido California. Each camp was built of wood and appeared to be modeled like US military barracks. The workers (all men) slept in bunk-beds, closely lined with boxes for each for personal items. Workers used open showers and did their laundry - much like soldiers of their day. Workers ate together in "mess-halls." They used metal trays for food and regular glasses for drinks. The quality of food varied by camp, cooks and staples provided by the companies. Camps that specialized in "Mexican food" kept their workers content. Camps that did not serve Mexican food experienced some protests and worker flight. I know this from personal experience. My father was one of the first contractors in San Diego county who worked successfully for Sunkist growers, serving Mexican food with fresh tortillas, lots of beans and rice and meat. The camps served by my father often had workers from other camps seeking "sanctuary" at the Sunkist camps. My father developed a wholesale business called C&R Provisions in Oceanside. He learned from personal experience as an immigrant farmworker (beginning at 15 years of age) the importance of home cooking and service. The 'C' in C&R stood for Castorena (Manuel) and the 'R' for Rochin (Refugio). Manuel Castorena (Spanish origin) was my fathers friend and our neighbor. He became the first mayor of Carlsbad California - also the founder of Carlsbad's acclaimed school for gems. Refugio Rochin (my father - born in Sinaloa Mexico in 1908) was a wholesaler of Mexican produce and owner of Mexican grocery stores and restaurants. Through the restaurants he befriended (mostly through the Rotary Club) some of Sunkist's executives. One, in particular, Roy Workman, who was married to a Mexican, was responsible for contract workers. Roy liked my dad and handled my dad's special contracts with Sunkist. Together, C&R and Sunkist developed contracts to feed workers at Sunkist labor camps. C&R Provisions also picked up several other farm labor camps in San Diego county. The business relationship led to C&R becoming a successful operation, supplying Mexican food and related supplies (e.g corn husks for tamales, spices, tortilla presses) in the region. I can relate more since I started working with my father in C&R from the time I was 10 years old. I was born in May 1941. When I was 16 - 1957 - I had my own delivery route and went to camps in Fallbrook, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. I also delivered to my father's close friend - actor Leo Carrillo. He purchased my fathers' specially aged prime rib and Mexican food for his parties and friends - some I met were old time movie stars, Conrad Hilton, and corporate executives. At the time, Leo was always in the Rose Parade and rode his beautiful gold stallions, all dressed with silver saddle, etc. For verification, contact: Gerry Streff.
