My name is Annette Shreibati and this is for the Bracero Oral History Project. AS: ¿Dónde y cuándo nació usted? PV: Mes 5, 4, día 4 del [19]39, 1939. AS: Háblame de su familia y del lugar donde nació. PV: ¡Oh! En El Molino, Municipio de San Diego de Alejandría, Jalisco. AS: Y que, ¿a qué se dedicaban sus papás? PV: Pues ellos eran agricultores. AS: Y, ¿sus hermanos y hermanas? ¿Tenías hermanos? PV: Sí. AS: ¿Cuántos? PV: Semos once. AS: Once. Y, ¿a dónde viven ellos? PV: No, semos diez orita, diez. Ellos están dos, uno está en México y los, todos los otros andamos por aquí. AS: ¿Por aquí en San Bernardino? PV: No, aquí en Estados Unidos. AS: Oh, en Estados Unidos. PV: Uno está en Stockton y otro está ahí en Delano, Y nosotros dos aquí en Fontana, yo y Clemente semos hermanos. AS: Y, ¿fuiste a la escuela como niño? PV: No, no tuve escuela yo. AS: ¿Sabes leer y escribir? PV: Lo único que sé, mal sé, pues… leer y escribir. Jue en la, en la bracereada cuando yo vine para acá. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Sí. AS: ¿Cómo aprendite? PV: Este, un señor que venía conmigo, en la contrata allá, hay veces que se conviene a uno con una persona. Y ya nos vinimos y nos tocó juntos. Y yo le decía a él que me hiciera las cartas, porque fue el [19]59. Entonces, este, para escribirle yo a mi casa. Entonces él, no, me las hacía. AS: Qué bueno. PV: Él era del Distrito Federal. Hombre de, de… tenía algo de escuela. AS: Y, ¿cómo se llamaba él? PV: No me acuerdo. No, hace cuarenta años (risas) AS: Sí, pos, sí. Y, ¿cómo se enteró usted de la Programa Bracero? PV: No, pos este, pos eso era municipal. Porque les daban preferencia a cada, a cada municipio, les daban preferencia de una cantidad de gente. AS: ¿Usted trabajó como niño? ¿En qué trabajaste? PV: No, pos yo, yo trabajé todo el tiempo, desde que… Como mis padres, este, fueron en, como eran campesinos, ¿vedá? Pos entonces empezábanos con que este, tenían sus vaquitas y ganado, entonces pos a cuidarlos. AS: Ah, pues sí. PV: A cuidarlos. Y después ya de allí, pos este, ya después cuando uno ya podía agarrar que… Sí, podía sacar adelante, empezaba a agarrar yuntas, sembraba uno ya, ya de por uno. Por ejemplo, si mi papá echaba él y mi hermano, que es el más grande, echaba dos; se decían dos yuntas que era una cantidad de hectáreas, como unas… Pos yo creo unas cinco, seis hectáreas de cada yunta. Entonces, ya cuando yo podía, pos ya él echaba tres. AS: Ah. PV: Sí. Mientras que estaba uno en la casa, ¿vedá? Ya después, pos cada quien ganaba. Entonces eso, eso fue mis principios y pos trabajar en el campo. AS: Sí. Y, ¿cómo le llamaron a la Programa Bracero cuando estuviste en México? ¿Le llamaron braceros? O, ¿le llamaron otra cosa? PV: No, braceros. AS: Braceros, ey. Contra… Sí, las oficinas eran contrataciones, ey. AS: Sí. PV: Pero este, todo, como uno era bracero. AS: ¿Estuviste casado cuando entraste de bracero? PV: No. AS: ¿Cuántos años tenías cuando te contrataste? PV: Tenía dieciocho años. AS: Dieciocho. PV: Sí. Nomás cumplí dieciocho años y me vine. AS: Ah. (risas) Y, antes de esa época, ¿pensabas ir a los Estados Unidos a trabajar? PV: ¿Cómo? ¿Esa época de…? AS: De, de los braceros. PV: No, pos cuando vine yo de, de bracero, el primer año, porque menos no admitían. AS: Bueno. PV: Ey. Entonces, este, no, pos de allí para acá. AS: Y, ¿por qué se dedicó ir a los Estados Unidos? PV: Pues, por lo mismo que venimos la gente, a buscar pos, poco más de mejor vida. AS: Sí. Y, ¿su familia lo influyó en su decisión? PV: ¿Mande? Sí. AS: Lo influyó. PV: Sí. AS: ¿Qué dijeron ellos? PV: No, pos ellos dijieron que estaba bien, pues. AS: Sí. PV: Al cabo, ¿vedá? Han de haber dicho que de todos modos se venía uno. AS: Sí. (risas) PV: Pos ya ve, ya es, este, la decisión de uno. Hay veces que no, no se la quita nadie. AS: Y, describa el proceso de contratación de ser bracero. PV: ¿Mande? AS: El proceso de contratación. ¿Tenían requisitos o algo? PV: ¿Requisitos de, de, de…? AS: De ser bracero. Como, ¿tenías que tener experiencia en el campo? PV: No. AS: ¿Nada? PV: No, no, no tenías tú que, que ser experencia. Claro, ¿vedá? Que este, en el contrato decía uno en lo que trabajaba allá, ¿verdad? Entonces, este, pues ellos como al campo, venía uno al campo, ellos aceptaba… Digo ellos, mejor, yo creo. Era mejor el que fuera campesino que algotra persona, ¿vedá? Porque el que fuera campesino, como venía del campo, pos ya sabía a qué era lo que venía y cómo era el trabajo de duro y el sol y todo eso. Porque tú sabes que, pos la industria tiene otra chanza de que no andas en el sol. No… AS: ¿Hubo algún examen físico? PV: Sí. AS: Y, ¿cómo fue eso? PV: De, de todo. AS: ¿De qué? PV: Lo jumigaban a uno, ey. Y este, y no te fija… ¿No te has fijado en la foto, allí on ta la bracero, que lo encueraban a uno? ¿No te fijates? Y este, y le… Pos si no traías enfermedades de, de así de estar con mujeres o todo eso, ¿verdad? Porque, pos ellos eran médicos allí, pues, los que estaban ahí, chequeando todo eso. AS: Y, ¿esperaban todo, este, esos exámenes? O, ¿sabían que iba a pasar eso o no sabían? PV: No, no, sí, sí. AS: ¿Sí? PV: Sí, pos es que desde que entrabas tú para acá. En la pasada allí te jumi… te jumigaban. Como, unos le echaban unos polvos a uno. AS: Y, ¿dónde y cuándo se enlistó de bracero? PV: En Empalme. AS: ¿En Empalme? PV: Ey. Las listas, las listas en Empalme, sí. Porque yo, yo nunca vine por este, por lista del municipio, de mi municipio, nunca vine por lista de mi municipio no vine yo. AS: ¿Cómo veniste? PV: Yo vine, este… El último año vine y pisqué dos mil kilos en Empalme, digo, en Obregón, Sonora. Y el patrón de allí le daba a uno la carta, una carta pa que viniera y la presentara a la contratación, a la oficina de contratación a Empalme. Y las otras veces, las otras veces yo me venía así a Empalme y allí agarraba, (risas) agarraba un coyote. AS: Y el, esa en Sonora o en… PV: Empalme, Sonora. AS: Sí. Empalme, Sonora. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia de trabajar allí para el contrato? PV: No, allí, allí no trabajaba uno. AS: Dijiste que de los… PV: En Empalme… Digo, en Obregón. AS: En Obregón. PV: En Obregón. AS: Y ahí, ¿cómo los trataban? PV: Este, pos no… Bueno, pues allí era uno voluntario, ¿vedá? AS: Sí. PV: Era voluntario uno allí. Con el interés de piscar los dos mil kilos, bueno, pos… No, no le hace que, cómo juera. AS: Y, ¿no les pagaron para el trabajo? PV: ¡Oh, sí! No, sí nos pagaban, como le pagaban a cualquier persona, sí. AS: Y, ¿fue duro ese trabajo? PV: Pos, sí. Siempre pos es duro el… Todo, todo el trabajo del campo es duro. AS: ¿Tenían que trabajar en sus días de descanso en otros trabajos? PV: No. AS: No. PV: En Empal[me]… Allá al otro lado no. AS: ¿A dónde es? PV: En Sonora no, no. AS: ¿En alguna parte? PV: Pero de todos modos piscábanos uno, uno mismo. AS: Sí. PV: Uno mismo piscaba, porque, cuando más quería hacer la cantidad de dos, dos mil kilos, a cual más quería lle… Digo, hacerlos pronto los dos mil kilos para venirse uno, ¿eh? Entonces, este, íbanos y piscábanos los sábados y los domingos si quería. AS: Sí. Y, ¿qué le dijeron los autoridades mexicanos o norteamericanos sobre qué debían esperar de su trabajo de bracero, antes que fuiste bracero? PV: ¿Cómo? AS: ¿Les dijeron algo de las condiciones de vida o los alimentos o salario, de qué debían esperar cuando fueron braceros? PV: Sí, pos yo, yo caí ganando $0.62, $0.60 centavos la hora. AS: ¿Sí les dijeron cuánto los autoridades? PV: Pos sí, yo creo que las autoridades, pos sí, venía uno como, como ahora, lo mínimo. Eso era lo mínimo en ese tiempo. Y si tú trabajabas, este, por contrato, ¿verdad? Entonces era diferente, a según lo que tú hicieras, eso era lo que, lo que ganaba. AS: Y, ¿cómo viajaste del lugar de reclutamiento al recepción, el centro de recepción? PV: ¿Al centro de la con… De, del…? AS: De recepción, a donde los… PV: Onde… AS: A los Estados Unidos. PV: ¿A onde veníanos? Este, pues no, pos en Empalme, onde nos contrataban, nos daban un pase que, para que nos viniéranos en el tren. Pero desde que uno venía contratado, ya venía por el patrón de este lado, de Estados Unidos, por el patrón de este lado, de Estados Unidos. Entonces, este, ya con esa carta nos veníanos en el tren. Llegábanos a Mexicali y a Mexicali ya de allí lo esperaban a uno, porque ellos abrían como a las diez de la mañana y cerraban como a las tres de la tarde, no trabajaban mucho. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Entonces, y ya de ahí para acá, era los examen que le daban a uno. Entonces, ya de allí, se subía uno a un camión y llegaba uno a La Asociación del lugar donde venía uno. Por ejemplo, como en La Asociación de Arizona, allí llegábanos y allí ya estaban los patrones allá: “Tú vas con aquel y tú con él”. Ey. AS: ¿En cuál trabajo tuviste primero? ¿En cuál ciudad? PV: En, en Arizona. AS: En Arizona. PV: Sí. AS: Y, ¿cuántos años trabajaste ahí? PV: Poco más de un año. AS: Y, ¿cuántos braceros trabajaban con usted? (risas) PV: Siempre. Digo… AS: ¿Cuántos? PV: Y de allí estábanos, tabanos en un campo. Ya el patrón nos llevaba a un campo onde había más. No, allí había, allí había mucha, mucha gente. AS: ¿Mucha? PV: Sí. Yo creo había, siempre, siempre había unas barracas grandes. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Ey. Yo creo unos, unos mil quinientos o dos mil. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Teníamos que leva… AS: En, ¿en una barraca grandota? PV: No, no, en algunas. AS: Algunas. PV: En algunas. Sí. AS: Y, ¿cómo fueron las condiciones de vida, como la cama y sillas? PV: No, pos camas de, de cama de, de esas de los militares. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Donde, de donde estás arriba de él. AS: ¿Una arriba de otra? PV: Uh huh. AS: Y, ¿los baños tenían drenaje? PV: Sí, sí tenían drenaje los baños, sí. AS: ¿Cómo? PV: Pero tenía uno que esperar bastante. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Sí, porque sí había algunos baños. Cada barraca tenía su baño, pero era, era bastante gente. Ora, para la comida tenía, tenía uno que levantarse una hora, hora y media o dos horas antes. AS: Ah, ¿sí? Y eso era… PV: Antes de su trabajo, sí. Sí, porque era una línea grande y tenía uno que levantarse temprano pa llegar uno, pa acercarse a la línea más, más rápido. Porque si se levantaba uno tarde, ya no alcanzaba uno a ir a lonchar. Cuando ya el patrón… Pos sí, cuando ya el patrón, el bus de nosotros ya estaba ahí. AS: Y, ¿cómo estaba la comida? PV: Pues, en algunos lugares estaba… Bueno, en lugares que yo estuve, estuvo bueno y en algunos malos. AS: ¿Qué les dieron de comer? PV: Pos nos daban, yo creo una carne que ni sabe de dónde vendría. (risas) Sí. Pero, este, pos de todos modos estuvimos, tuvimos allí. AS: ¿Les dieron suficiente? PV: En unos no. Sí. AS: ¿Sí? PV: Sí, este, porque tú tenías un contrato, tenías que cumplirlo. AS: Sí. PV: No tenías que irte pa ningún lado. AS: Y los otros braceros ahí que trabajaban con usted, ¿fueron puros mexicanos o habían…? PV: No, no, no había más de puro mexicano. AS: Puro mexicano. PV: No, no, no había de otra gente. AS: Y, ¿había personas como indios o algo así que hablaban Hindus, que hablaban diferente idioma? PV: ¡No! AS: Pero, ¿mexicanos, pero que hablaban otra idioma? PV: Pues sí había veces, había veces que se arrimaban, se arrimaban, pero poco tiempo. Una semana o dos se arrimaban, se arrimaban algunos y pedían trabajo y luego, este, pos no les gustaba y se iban. AS: ¿Por qué no les gustaba? PV: Pos, por lo duro de, del trabajo. AS: Oh, lo duro. PV: Sí. AS: ¿Los trataban diferente los mexicanos a ellos? PV: No, no lo trataban, nada más que pos hay veces que… Pos es como, como todo y donde quiera. AS: Sí. PV: ¿Vedá? Hay personas que sí, aunque el patrón no les diga, de todos modos están trabajando más duro que otro, ¿vedá? Y luego hay veces allí, hay veces que es onde los demás, a los demás no les gusta que… Y en veces dicen que, pos este, que jue un trato malo, pero bue… Pos no, pos cada quien, este, trabaja como, como le gusta, ¿vedá? Como él quiere. AS: Y, la comunidad, que no fueron braceros, pero ahí el pueblito, ¿hablaban con ellos o no fueron al pueblo? PV: Este, nosotros tábanos fuera del… Pos tábanos fuera del pueblo. Siempre los campos estuvieron fuera del pueblo. AS: Oh, sí. PV: Retiradito del pueblo. Supongamos, como… Sí, retirado del pueblo, unos quince o, unos quince minutos o diez minutos, pero en carro. AS: ¿Cuál pueblo? PV: Tú sabes que… AS: ¿Cuál pueblo era el más cercano? PV: Allí estaba, pos se llamaba Agua Fría. AS: Agua Fría. PV: Agua Fría, Arizona. Y luego, estaba Glendora. Y luego estaba, taban otros pueblitos. Y luego, Phoenix taba más adelante. Pos Phoenix es la capital de, de Arizona. AS: Y, ¿fueron muchas veces a esos pueblitos? PV: No, pos sí. (risas) Había, había veces que sí íbanos cada ocho días. AS: ¿Sí? Y, ¿quién les dieron raite ahí? PV: Este, pos había gentes, gentes que venían, conocidas del pueblo, venían. O gen… gente que, que estaba también piscando, ¿verdad? Nomás que ellos vivían en sus casas, ellos no eran braceros. Ellos no eran braceros. Ellos vivían en su casa. Y ya, este, muchas personas buenas, este, ya nos decían si: “Cuando quieran, cuando quieran venir al pueblo, díganos y nosotros vamos y los traemos y los llevamos otra vez”. AS: ¿Qué hicieron ahí en los pueblos? PV: Pos íbanos a andar, este, a ver y a comprar, pos cosas que tenía uno que comprar: ropa, zapatos o… Pos cosas que, que acá no había. Pero, este, en los campos sí, sí iba mucho, mucho de este, de este… Como los estos fayuqueros que venden y hay veces que van a los lugares onde, onde hay mucha gente. AS: Sí. PV: Nomás que son, de estos, estos húngaros, ¿no? Tipo, tipo así de, de… AS: Húngaro. PV: Los que, los judíos. AS: Judíos. PV: Los judíos ya ves que los judíos son muy comerciante, muy comerciantes. Andan hasta, todavía hay por ahí unos que van así hasta las casas a ofrecer sus… AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Sus cosas que traen. AS: Y, ¿en ese tiempo había muchos judíos? PV: Sí, de eso sí. AS: Y, ¿húngaros? PV: Sí. AS: ¿A dónde vivían ellos? PV: No, yo creo ellos vivían en el pueblo yo creo. Pero ellos venían ellos cada, cada día de, de… Cada vez de, de pago, porque nos pagaban cada quince días. Cada vez de pago ellos iban. AS: ¿A los campos? PV: Sí. Llevaban mucha ropa, llevaban camiones grandes. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Ropa, este, zapatos y no, muchas cosas, muchas cosas. AS: Y, ¿ellos hablaban español? PV: ¡Oh, sí! Sí. AS: ¿Sí los atendían? PV: Sí son… Sí, esos son, esos luego les enseñan a hablar español, español. AS: Y, ¿cómo los trataban? ¿Cómo fueron los mexicanos y ellos? PV: No, pos, sí… AS: ¿Les daban buenas? PV: Sí, bien. AS: ¿No había problemas con los judíos o con los húngaros? PV: No, no, no. No, ellos llevaban… Iban a vender y pos el que iba a comprar, ese iba a comprar y ya. No, no, no se trataba de, de que… Porque iban a allí y había mucha gente y que querer agarrarles su mercancía, no, ey. AS: Y, ¿qué más hicieron de divertirse en sus días de descanso? PV: Pos, ahí en el campo, pos, ¿qué hacía uno? Allí nomás, pos unos tomando (risas) y otros, este, pos jugando y había, había allí, este, también unos campe… Campos para jugar béis[bol] o jugar básquet o así, el que quisiera. Y este, y no, pos, hasta la fecha, fíjate, ando aquí yo todavía. Y fíjate, yo me hice residente la Amnistía pasada. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: La Amnistía que dio Reagan, ¿vedá? AS: ¿Reagan? PV: Porque yo, yo de todos modos vine, toy viniendo desde es… Desde ese primer año [es]toy viniendo. Me casé y venía. AS: A los Estados Unidos. PV: Ey. AS: ¿Para trabajar? PV: Ey. Y, pero, en esos tiempos La Migra era muy dura. Había veces que nomás duraba un día o dos y me echaban pa afuera. AS: So, fuiste ilegalmente pa… PV: No, sí de brace… De, de ilegal. Porque se acabó la manera de venir legales. AS: Sí. PV: Cuando se acabó la bracereada se, se… Este, porque, cuando si tú venías de así de, de mojado que dicen, de contrabando cuando había bracereada, te castigaban. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Te agarraban y te castigaban, no te echaban pa ajuera luego. AS: ¿Qué les hicieron? PV: No, durábanos tres… Durabas tú, no sé si eran dos o tres meses en la cárcel. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Porque decían que, ¿por qué entrabas tú, este, así de contrabando si había manera de entrar de contratado? Pero ya cuando se terminó, que no había contrataciones, ¿vedá? Entonces la gente toda se vino. AS: Sí. PV: Y ya después no castigaban. Te agarraban y te echaban. Te agarraban… AS: Y, no les… Sus patrones, ¿no les ayudaron para arreglar su residencia o inmigración? PV: Alguna gente sí, sí, sí, por los patrones arreglaron. Pos después ya, ya se puso más difícil. Se puso más difícil. Ya después, este, hubo una carta, no me acuerdo qué carta era, que solamente con esa arreglabas, pero no te la daban. AS: ¿No? PV: No. AS: ¿Por qué? PV: Porque yo, yo creo no, no taban, no tenían permitido dar las cartas. AS: Y, ¿usted quería tener residencia? PV: Una vez, una vez yo, este, quise, pero no, no se pudo. Entonces, pos ya el patrón me hizo esto, pos, “¿ya qué voy a hacer yo?”. Dice la gente: “¿ya qué voy a hacer yo?”. “Nada”. Y, y el patrón se impone y sigue y sigue así. Y ahí hay patrones muy justos, sí. Y hay patrones que cuando vine yo, las primeras veces que vine de contrabajando, este, a mí los patrones me mandaban los cheques pa allá. Me mandaban mi cheque pa allá, ey. Buenas gentes. Y había, había unos, decían, a mí nunca me faltó eso. Decían que no, no les mandaban su cheque los patrones. O sea, que entre el patrón y el mayordomo ahí se, ahí quedaba. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Sí, el patrón se lo daba al mayordomo, el mayordomo no lo mandaba, nomás le decía al patrón, que pos, lo mandaba. AS: Y, ¿podrían hacer para cuando no le gustaba algo o cuando le trataban mal? ¿Qué podían hacer ustedes? PV: Cuando tratábamos en mal, ¿en qué? ¿En qué forma? Desde el momento, una cantidad de persona que se contrataba, ése era una cantidad de dinero que tenía que dar y nomás se contrataba la gente y luego luego les pagaban. AS: ¿Alguna vez tenías una experiencia de discriminación entre… que su mayordomo o patrón como que lo trataba mal cuando fuiste bracero? PV: Pues, pos sí había diferencias, pero pues, como todo, pues. Diferencias que tenía, que tenía uno con ellos porque, este, ellos querían hacer que tú hicieras más trabajo y claro que, que en un lugar, ¿verdad? Si, si tú estás haciendo tu trabajo, no te pueden exigir, ¿vedá? Solamente que estés sentado o estés platicando o no vas a trabajar, entonces sí tienen derecho de decir: “Oyes, pos yo quiero que trabajes. Pos yo veo que no, no le haces la lucha trabajar”. Y por eso, por esas diferencias, pues. AS: Sí. PV: Que hay. AS: Y, ¿alguna vez usted o alguno de sus compañeros organizaron un protesta laboral? PV: Parece que sí. Había veces que llegaban a las diez u once de la noche. AS: Oh, ¿sí? PV: Sí. Trabajaban doce y trece horas. Y esos, esos… AS: ¿Tenían que hacerlo o querían? PV: No, no quería, era de que ellos querían, querían. AS: ¿Querían? ¿Sí querían? PV: Sí, pos ellos querían ser cargadores porque ganaban más dinero. AS: ¿Cómo? PV: Pos, es que pagaban un porcentaje cada caja. AS: Y usted, hiciste… PV: No, nosotros por la hora. Nosotros en la hora. Porque ellos trabajaban con nosotros desde en la mañana. Y ellos lo metían en unas listas que venían de municipio. Lo entrabaraban allí. Dicían: “Lista de, de tal parte”. Y como a uno le decían: “Mira, va a entrar esta lista de tal parte”. Porque allí hablaban por micrófono hablaban allí: “La lista de tal parte”. Y empezaba: “Fulano y zutano, y ahí iba”, ¿eh? Y de ahí nomás resultaba uno allí entre ellos, en que no lo… En que no fuera del mismo lu[gar], ciudad de donde venía uno. Pero allí lo metían los, metían los, los papeles, la lista. Metían el nombre. En esa lista nos metían los, los licenciados. AS: ¿Alguna vez renunció a su trabajo? PV: No. AS: No. Y, ¿se hizo ciudadano en cuál año? PV: Ah, sí. Hace dos años. AS: Hace dos años. Title A name given to the resource Pedro Velázquez Subject The topic of the resource bracero Description An account of the resource Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: Pedro Velázquez was born on May 4, 1939, on a small ranched named El Molino in San Diego de Alejandría, Jalisco, México; his parents worked in agriculture; he was never formally educated; consequently, he did not learn to read or write until he was an adult; during his adolescence he helped his parents care for animals; in 1959, he enlisted in the bracero program, and he stayed working there until it ended in 1964. Summary of Interview: Mr. Velázquez recalls learning to work the land with his family; in 1959, he traveled to Empalme, Sonora, to enlist in the bracero program, but his name was not on the list of eligible workers; in order he had to get the necessary papers, he had to pick two thousand kilos of cotton, which was very hard work; from then on, he preferred to pay a coyote to get the documentation; from there he went to Mexicali, Baja California, México, and the center there was only open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM; his first contract took him to Arizona, where he stayed for a little over a year; some of the people who worked there but lived in town offered to give the braceros a ride whenever they needed one; he goes on to detail the various worksites, housing, living conditions, amenities, provisions, daily routines, treatment, payments, deductions, remittances, and recreational activities, including trips into town; although it never happened to him, sometimes braceros were cheated out of their paychecks by the foremen; on paydays, groups of people would go to the camps in huge buses to sell goods, like clothes and shoes; in addition, he mentions that immigration officials would often go to the camp sites, because there were so many undocumented workers; during the program people without proper documentation were punished with jail time for a few months before being sent home, but when the program ended, they were sent straight home without having to go to jail; after his last contract in 1964, he returned to México, but he later came to the United States illegally; he was ultimately able to obtain legal documentation and permanently settle in the United States. The interviewer is Araceli Esparza. This interview is part of the Bracero Oral History Project. AE: Bueno, señora Rivas de Rodríguez, muchas gracias por ser parte de esta entrevista. Primero quiero empezar por preguntarle de sus memorias, familiares, de su familia, de sobre su mamá, empezando con su mamá y su papá, ¿qué y de dónde, en dónde vivían ellos? PR: Allá en Valparaíso, Zacatecas. AE: Y, ¿usted nació en Valparaíso también? PR: Ajá. AE: ¿Su mamá y su papá también nacieron? PR: También nacieron ahí. AE: Y, ¿en qué trabajaba su papá? Y si trabaja su mamá, ¿en qué trabajaba su mamá? PR: Mi mamá sólo en la casa, o de, ¿cómo se llama? Ama de casa. Mi papá allá en Valparaíso, mi papá hacía lápidas de mármol para las memorias de los difuntos, así para los panteones. En eso trabaja. Trabajaba, pues. AE: Y, ¿cómo se llamaba su mamá? PR: Mi mamá, Cosuelo García. AE: Y, ¿su papá? PR: De Rivas. Juan Rivas Bañuelo. AE: Y, ¿usted tiene hermanas y hermanos? ¿Cuántas hermanas? PR: Somos doce de familia. Cinco hermanas o mejor dicho, cinco hermanos y siete hermanas. AE: Bueno y sus hermanas y hermanos, bueno, empezando con su mamá y su papá, ¿ellos fueron a la escuela? PR: Mi papá y mi mamá no. Bueno, fueron poquito tiempo, como dice mi papá que él, si acaso fue a la escuela, como algunos, dos temporadas, pero tenía, tiene buena memoria, porque él nos regañaba mucho porque uno no aprendía y él sabía más, sin ir a la escuela, sin que haiga ido a la escuela, pues. AE: Y, ¿su papá todavía vive? PR: Sí, mi papá sí, mi mamá no. AE: ¿En dónde vive su papá? PR: Allá en Valparaíso. AE: Y, ¿sus hermanas y hermanos todavía están en Valparaíso? PR: No, la más, [es]tamos diez, nueve aquí y dos allá están en Valparaíso. AE: Y, ¿su papá está con…? PR: Sí, con uno de ellos. Ahí con el más chico de los hermanos, en la casa. AE: Bueno. Y, ¿sus hermanas y hermanos fueron a la escuela? PR: Sí. AE: ¿Hasta qué grado? PR: Bueno, los primeros como yo, que soy la mayor, (risas) no fui a la escuela. O sea no hubo dinero para que me dieran estudio, sólo lo básico, nomás la primaria. Pero como yo, mi hermana la que se me sigue a mí y el otro, como cinco, me parece, como cinco o seis no fuimos a la escuela. Digo, fuimos a la escuela, pero solamente la primaria. Y los demás ya fueron a la secundaria. AE: Y, ¿por qué fue posible que los menores fueran a la escuela y los mayores no? PR: Porque ya, como nosotros, ¿vedá? En aquel tiempo pos éramos más pobres. Mi papá se venía de bracero, a veces nomás lo contrataban cuarenta y cinco días. Cuando lo contrataban que era mucho, eran tres meses, creo y luego a veces se lo renovaban el contrato a otros tres, ya eran seis. Era cuando la gente se alivianaba más o menos. AE: Entonces que su papá fue bracero, hizo posible que sus hermanas y hermanos menores… PR: Ya fueran a la escuela. Entonces ya mi papá con eso de los braceros y eso que le iba bien y que esto y que lo otro, nos compró una casa, la donde vivimos. Porque antes vivíamos con los agüelos. (risas) AE: Y, ¿cuánta gente vivía con los abuelos? PR: Bueno, pos en aquel entonces, como mi papá era hijo, nomás eran dos de familia, tres, ahí con el agüelo pos, nomás, ya nomás nosotros, éramos, ¿qué? Cuando vivimos con el agüelo, nomás éramos dos de familia, yo y otra, la que se me seguía a mí. Ya después mi papá compró la casita y ya. AE: ¿Cuántos hermanos tuvo su papá o hermanas? PR: ¿Mi papá? AE: Sí. PR: No, de familia, mi papá hermanos, sólo uno y una hermana. Fueron nomás tres ellos. AE: Y su hermano de su papá, ¿se vino como bracero también? PR: También se vino como bracero. AE: Y, ¿ellos venían juntos? PR: Se me hace que por separado, porque a veces los contrataban unos pa un rumbo y otros pa otro. Pero sí, de ahí de Valparaíso sí salían todos juntos a la ciudad de Empalme, creo decía, oía yo decir a mi papá. AE: ¿Cómo se dio cuenta su papá del Programa Bracero? PR: Porque, por la presidencia allá en Valparaíso. Siempre les llegaba, me imagino que siempre les llegaban noticias, o ¿cómo? Notificación, les notificaban, ¿vedá?, que iba a haber braceros. Porque yo recuerdo que mi papá se iba, que voy a ver si alcanzo lista, a anotarme para salir de bracero, a ver si, porque como se anotaba mucha gente, creo los sorteaban o quién sabe qué y decía mi papá: “Hay que irse a anotar”. Se iban y se anotaban, me imagino yo que en la presidencia, ¿pos a dónde más? AE: ¿Allí mismo en Valparaíso? PR: Ahí mismo en Valparaíso. AE: Y, si le daban contratos, si le llamaban, ¿a dónde se iba de Valparaíso? PR: No, ya cuando estaban anotada la cantidad de personas, como por decir, decía mi papá, que en ese pueblo, ¿vedá? Pos que piden a tantos señores, trescientos, vamos a suponer, o no recuerdo la cantidad, pero que piden a tantos señores de ese pueblo. Entonces ya se anotaban, en nada más hasta donde se decía nomás, los que pedía se anotaban. “No, pos que ya, no pos que yo ya no alcancé”, decían otras personas, “ya fui tarde, ya no alcancé”. Solamente la cantidad que pedían. AE: Y eso, ya cuando tenían la cantidad. PR: Entonces los, pos conseguían dinero para irse a la ciudad de Empalme. Y ahí en el Empalme, ahí se estaban hasta ocho, quince días o qué sé yo, hasta que no los, llegaban los gringos por ellos: “Que necesito tantos personas”. Dicen que estaba ahí el montonadero así de gente en la ciudad de Empalme, pero de diferentes lugares, ¿vedá? Porque de Valparaíso, pos que tantos de quién sabe de dónde, tantos y así de diferentes pueblos. AE: Y, ¿dónde se quedaban cuando estaban en?, ¿cómo se llama la ciudad? PR: Empalme. AE: Empalme. PR: Ay, dice mi papá que se quedaban en un corralón, de cobijas eran cartones. AE: Y, ¿se acuerda qué comían? PR: Ay, dice que a veces no tenían ni qué comer. A veces no comían, a veces. Mi papá casi muy poco de eso hablaba, pero yo oía a los, o otras personas que se iban de braceros, también, que a veces comían puras cáscaras de plátano, que andaban ahí de mendingando como luego dicen. AE: ¿Eso fue en los Estados Unidos? PR: No, en México. AE: Cuando estaban esperando. PR: En México. Cuando estaban esperando que llegaran los gringos por ellos. AE: Y cuando llegaban a recogerlos, ¿en qué se iban o cómo se los llevaban? PR: No recuerdo. AE: A los señores, a los trabajadores. PR: No recuerdo en qué se los llevarían. Pero sí, primero los bañaban y los fumigaban ahí en Empalme, a las personas, al grupo que, que deste, que se iban a llevar, que los fumigaban, oía yo decir a mi papá. Los bañaban y los (ininteligible) que pa que no llevaran piojos, que pa que no llevaran esto, que ningún microbio acá a Estados Unidos. AE: Y su papá cuando le platicaba sobre esas memorias, le decía algo más, como sobre sus sentimientos de eso, ¿qué pensaba su papá de eso, o piensa? PR: Pos no, pos decía mi papá que la necesidad los hacía hacer todo eso. AE: Y, ¿decían algo de las personas que lo estaban haciendo, que les estaban haciendo eso? PR: No, pos no, no recuerdo yo eso, pero eso era lo que les hacían y ya se venían. AE: ¿Usted cuántos años tenía? PR: Cuando mi papá se vino de bracero, pos sabe. Pues yo creo, yo estaba en la primaria, pos tendría algunos, ¿qué serían? Ocho, diez años, me imagino. AE: Entonces usted todavía estaba chiquita y la última vez que su papá se vino como bracero a los Estados Unidos, ¿cuántos años tenía? PR: Oh, ya estaba señorita yo. (risas) Sí, porque ya se vino, las últimas veces pos ya era, se acabó la braceriada por ahí como se me hace que como en el [19]60, en el [19]60 y algo se acabaron los braceros, ¿no? Pos ya yo ya estaba señorita. AE: Y, ¿usted se acuerda más de cuando su papá se iba? ¿Su papá cuántos años tenía cuando empezó a venirse? PR: Por mira, mi papá tendría como algunos treinta y algo de años, como algunos, sí porque… AE: Y, ¿cuántos años de casado tenía? PR: Porque mira, mi papá se casó bien joven, a los dieciocho años. Ponle que yo tenía como unos diez cuando se vino de bracero. Así que se venía, tendría mi papá como unos veintiocho años. Cuando se cerró la braceriada, mi papá tendría algunos treinta, cuarenta años, cuando se cerraron los braceros, que pues que ya no hubo bracero. AE: Sí. Y entonces su mamá de usted y su papá se casaron cuando los dos estaban jóvenes, ¿vedá? Y, ¿usted sabe algo de sobre su noviazgo así, tiene memorias? PR: Mi mamá siempre me platicaba que ella nunca, nunca, pos en primera no la dejaban salir con el novio, siempre que se escribían por cartas. Y decía mi mamá que como no había agua potable, entonces iban a traer agua al río, al arroyo, para uso de la casa y para tomar y todo. Dice mi mamá, dice mi mamá, platicaba, dice: “Entonces”, dice, “ya sabíamos en cuál piedra era la onde me dejaba tu papá la carta y yo también ahí se la contestaba y ahí se la tenía que dejar en, la debajo de la piedra, fulana”, dice, “por el camino así”. Ya más o menos sabían por qué camino. Dice: “Ya íbanos, iba, bajaba uno al agua, porque hasta para eso se tenía uno que esconder, pa leer la carta”, dice, “bajaba uno al agua y ahí va uno, ahí donde estaba la piedra”, dice, “ya, a leer la carta”. (risas) Decía: “Y ahora no”, dice, “ahora si no se andan agarrando de la mano, que esto y que lo otro”. (risas) Y ya. Y así era. AE: Bueno, (risas) y ya, me estaba contando usted sobre el centro de contratación, ¿vedá? En La Palma. PR: En Empalme. AE: Empalme. Y ya, ¿su papá le contaba sobre sus experiencias en los Estados Unidos también? PR: Pos casi no, a mí no, casi muy poco, no me acuerdo, pero no, yo creo que nomás a mi mamá. Pero no, yo no me acuerdo, yo nomás me acuerdo yo que oía de eso de Empalme y que las contrataciones y esto y lo otro. AE: Y, ¿qué, cómo se comunicaba su papá con su mamá? PR: Por carta. AE: Y, ¿le mandaba dinero? PR: Nos mandaba dinero. AE: ¿Usted se acuerda? PR: Sí. AE: ¿Cada cuándo? PR: Sí, nos mandaba cada quince días, a veces cada mes, pero más, más, cada quince días nos mandaba. AE: Y, ¿su papá…? PR: En money order. AE: En, ¿sí? (risas) Iba a la tienda o compraba. PR: Pos yo no sé, nos mandaba una tarjetita, pos yo decía que era, como ora que money order, ¿vedá? Nos la mandaba registrada o a veces así y llegaba el cartero. AE: Y, ¿su mamá iba al banco? PR: A las tiendas. Antes nomás había un banco se me hace en Valparaíso. Nomás un banco, pero a veces lo pagaban mejor el dólar en las tiendas, así como tienda de ropa o zapatería. Y pos le buscaba la gente donde te lo pagaran mejor el dólar. Me acuerdo yo que, me acuerdo que duró muchos años, el dólar valía doce, $12 pesos, muchos años duró valiendo $12 pesos el dólar. No, pos ya con $50 dólares o $100 que nos mandara mi papá, oh, pos ya, era mucho dinero. (risas) AE: Entonces los niños, usted como niña sabía que si su papá estaba trabajando acá, la situación iba a ser mejor. PR: Me era va a ser mejor, para nosotros allá pos era mejor. AE: ¿Cómo cambiaba? PR: Pos cambiaba, peor cuando no llovía mira, porque allá, la vida de uno era que lloviera para que pudiera uno, el papá pudiera sembrar, ¿vedá? Maíz, frijol, todo eso. Y si no llovía, no se levantaba nada. Tonces ya cuando se venían de braceros, y que nos mandaba dinero, compraba uno maíz, frijol, así para poder tener para poder comer. Y pues ya no pasaba uno tantas necesidades. AE: Entonces, ¿la lluvia tuvo que ver con su papá viniéndose a los Estados Unidos? PR: Pues sí, porque a veces no llovía, ¿pos qué se quedaban a hacer allá los señores? Sí, cuando llueve, ¿vedá? Pos no habían, antes no había pozos, como ahora, pos ya hay pozos de regadío y toda la cosa. Pos antes nomás esperando que lloviera y si no llovía, pos no se sembraba y si llovía y sembraban, y a veces hasta ahí nomás, no se daba lo que sembraban, no se levantaba nada. AE: Y la gente que no se venía a los Estados Unidos, ¿qué hacía? PR: Pos sufría más, porque a veces pos, ¿quién los buscaba para trabajos así de casa o qué sé yo? Pos si la gente toda estaba igual. AE: Sí. ¿Se iban a otros lugares o a otras ciudades? PR: Se iban, salía la gente a otros lugares, a otras ciudades, salía la gente. AE: A ver y, ¿usted qué sentía cuando su papá salía? ¿Usted estaba ya de ocho a nueve? PR: Ah, pos sentíamos tristeza, porque pos uno nunca sabe. Tristeza y gusto nos daba cuando ya recibíamos la carta, que ya estaba en tal o cual lugar. AE: Y usted, ¿en qué lugares fue su papá? PR: Pos no me acuerdo, si en, una vez creo que en Ysleta, pos no recuerdo, en Oklahoma o en… Ay, yo no sé, pero siempre estuvo en diferentes lugares, ¿vedá? Pero no me, no recuerdo en qué lugares, pero en Ysleta creo sí, una vez o así, pero no, no me acuerdo bien. AE: Y cuando su papá se venía, ¿ustedes se quedaban en casa con su mamá? Y, ¿cómo cambiaba la situación pues familiar? ¿Su mamá qué papel tomaba, tenían que…? PR: Pos tomaba el de mamá y el de papá, o sea, ¿vedá? Pos dirigir la familia ella, pero como no se estaba mucho tiempo mi papá, pues siempre las contrataciones no, eran por poco tiempo, pero siempre, pues ya se ayudaba uno, de perdida le compraban a uno zapatos. (risas) Y ya, cogía una ropa así y ya. De perdida tenía uno otro cambio. AE: Y usted me contó que cuando mi papá se vino les compró una casa, ¿vedá? La casa donde vivían. Su mamá cuando recibía el dinero, ¿lo ahorraba para poder comprar la casa? ¿Usted diría que…? PR: O sea que las casas antes no valían gran cosa. Pos no valían mucho dinero. Entonces mejor dicho, mi papá compró como un terreno y sólo de cuartos había uno y así. Pos con sacrificios se levanta otro cuarto y así. Pero más bien esa casa, compró mi papá la mitad solamente del terreno, porque la otra mitad fue herencia para mi mamá. El papá de ella pues, le regaló la mitad de, de esa casa y mi papá nomás tuvo que comprar la otra mitad. AE: ¿De quién la compró? ¿Quién era dueño de la otra mitad del terreno? PR: Pos el papá de mi mamá. AE: Oh, entonces, mitad herencia y mitad… PR: Ajá. AE: ¿Pero era el mismo? PR: Pero era el mismo. AE: El mismo dueño. PR: El mismo dueño. Porque antes, fíjate, ya cuando se iban, que ya no iba a haber contrataciones, entonces los patrones te arreglaban papeles. Y mi papá, el patrón de mi papá que tuvo al último, platicaba mi papá que él, él fue por nosotros y nada más éramos yo y mi otra hermana y se me hace que otra, éramos como tres nomás de familia. Cuando mi papá fue por nosotros, que porque el patrón nos quería, ¿vedá? En la frontera, porque nos iba a arreglar los papeles y a mi papá como trabajador. Y el agüelo no nos dejó venir, porque se le hizo muy triste que nos viniéramos todos, su hija y con nosotros y quién sabe qué y por eso fue que nos vendió; nos regaló la mitad de la casa y la otra mitad se la vendió. AE: ¿Eso fue la primera vez que su papá se vino? PR: No, no, no fue la primera vez, fue como pos, ¿cuántas va? Uh, pos se vino un montón de veces. Pero fue como a la, como a la, cuando yo tendría como unos, ¿qué serían? Unos doce años, yo creo. Cuando mi papá compró esa, esa, porque mi papá dijo: “Pos no tengo casa”. Allá en Valparaíso vivíamos con los agüelos, dice: “Mande”, dice, “nomás voy, agarro mi señora y mis hijos y me vengo, ¿vedá?”. El patrón le dijo: “Ve por tu familia”. Y pero el agüelo no nos dejó, pos allá nos quedamos. AE: Los convenció a ustedes y al papá. PR: Y allá nos quedamos y se volvió él a venir otra vez, pero ya nomás vino como unas, ¿qué serían? Unas poquitas veces, ya después ya se cerraron las contrataciones, ya no hubo. AE: Entonces su papá de usted, usted, piensa que tenía como meta quedarse en los Estados Unidos, pero eso, lo que hizo su abuelito. PR: Pos ya. Y luego le digo a mi papá: “Y ahora mire, todos estamos acá y usted está allá, por no haber querido venirse en aquel entonces”. (risas) AE: ¿Cómo siente su papá de estar allá? PR: Pues está triste, porque él sí sabe, sí puede venir, pero pos siempre ya la edad y todo eso. Pos, sí viene porque aquí estuvo, pero ya después pos no. Dice mi papá: “Pues ya ves lo que son las cosas”, dice, “yo no quería norte para todos y aquí están todos”. (risas) AE: ¿Cómo llegaron ustedes a venirse a los Estados Unidos? PR: Ah, pues así como llegan todos, con, con coyote. (risas) AE: (risas) Sí, ¿pero cómo hicieron la decisión? ¿En qué año? PR: Yo fui la primera, yo fui la primera que me vine a trabajar aquí, porque como ya no hubo contrataciones, ¿vedá? Y ya pos todo allá muy este, muy, y mi papá tanta familia, decía yo: “Pos no”. Yo fui la primera que me vine. AE: ¿En qué año se vino? PR: Me vine en el [19]72, me parece. AE: Y, ¿con quién vino? PR: Aquí tenía unos padrinos, los padrinos de mi bautizo, con ellos, ellos me invitaron y con ellos me vine. Y a trabajar. AE: ¿Fue hasta la frontera usted sola? Y ya cruzó. PR: A la frontera. AE: Y, ¿a qué ciudad? PR: Aquí a Los Ángeles. AE: Y, ¿aquí ya se quedó? PR: Y aquí me quedé. (risas) AE: Y, ¿usted ya venía casada o se casó aquí? PR: Aquí me casé. AE: ¿Sus padrinos era, su padrino era bracero? PR: Ajá. AE: Entonces, ¿él cómo llegó a quedarse en Los Ángeles ya que pasó las contrataciones? PR: Porque mi madrina era también, era también de allá de Valparaíso, ¿vedá? Pero ella sí nació aquí, creo en Chicago. Cuando también se venía mucha gente, se vinieron sus papases, creo Chicago. Y luego quién sabe a qué se regresaron y ella nació en Chicago. Total, ella era ciudadana. Y también se los trajo ya muy grandes a sus hijos, se los trajo ya grandecitos al… Porque no se querían venir y no se querían venir, al último siempre sí se vinieron. AE: Con la madrina y el padrino. Y usted cuando llegó a Los Ángeles, ¿en qué trabajaba? PR: Llegué trabajando de babysitter. AE: ¿Así en casas? PR: En casas, cuidando niños, haciendo limpieza. AE: ¿Se quedaba usted en las casas o bueno, a vivir así como por ejemplo entre semana? Y luego ya iba a… PR: Entre semana me quedaba en la casa que onde cuidaba a los niños y de babysitter, y salía los fines de semana a descansar, salía así con amigos, amigas de allá mismo o con mi madrina que estaba ahí, ahí llegaba. AE: Hablando de pasar el tiempo, ¿su papá le platicó algún día de cómo pasaba él el tiempo, cuando estaba aquí en los Estados Unidos como bracero? PR: Sí, decía que formaban entre muchos braceros el fútbol, el juego ése, deporte de fútbol, de béisbol, el del garrote, béisbol. AE: Oh, béisbol. PR: Béisbol, ¿vedá?, ¿ese qué? AE: Y, ¿en dónde jugaban?, ¿en el campo? PR: Pos había veces que en el campo, cuando salían de, del trabajo, ahí sí había campos, decía él. Ni los formaban y hacían equipos, de un rancho a otro rancho, que se juntaban los rancheros así. AE: Y cuando iba, cuando salía del rancho. PR: Ándele, oiga ya salió toda la gente y… AE: ¿Iba a la ciudad? PR: Y ahí me está esperando el señor. AE: Oh, ¿la están? A ver, bueno pues, ya para terminar, ¿usted quiere decir alguna otra cosa, reflejar en algo que…? PR: No, pues ya. AE: Que yo no le he preguntado. PR: A ver, pregúnteme y ya. Summary of Interview: Ms. Rivas de Rodríguez briefly discusses her family and childhood; she recalls hearing about the courtship between her mother and father; in the midfifties her father enlisted in the bracero program, which financially helped her family, and they were able to move out of her paternal grandfather’s home and into their own; she remembers that there were always notices around town to sign up for the program; the men had to stay anywhere between eight and fifteen days in Empalme, Sonora, México; while waiting some men ate banana peels or nothing at all, and they used cardboard as blankets; the fumigations they underwent were also difficult, but necessity drove them; when her father left, the entire family was sad and worried about what could happen to him; upon receiving their first letter from him they were elated and relieved; every fifteen days her father sent letters and money home; her mother cashed the money orders at local stores, because they offered a better dollar to peso ratio than the banks; at the time they were able to receive twelve pesos for every dollar, which went a long way; with this money, some of her younger siblings were even able to attend secondary schools; they were able to buy their necessities instead of having to depend on whatever the crops would yield if there was even enough rain in a given season; one of her father’s employers offered to help him and his family obtain legal documentation, but her grandfather did not want to let them leave; overall, her family benefited greatly from the program. Entrevistando al señor Manuel Márquez Flores, para el Departamento de Historia Oral de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, Myrna Parra Mantilla. MP: Buenas tardes señor Márquez. MM: Buenas tardes MP: Para empezar la entrevista quisiera que me dijera, ¿dónde y cuándo nació? MM: Nací en Julimes, en 1920. MP: Quisiera que me platicara un poco de su infancia, de sus papás, ¿a qué se dedicaban, sus hermanos? MM: No, pues mi papá trabajaba todo el tiempo en agricultura, pobremente, muy pobremente. MP: Y, ¿su mamá? MM: Pues igualmente. Ya sabe que, de que tiene que hacerle frente al esposo. Lo que el esposo haga, pues tiene que aguantar, hambres, fríos, no tienen remedio, porque así es la vida. Así fue la vida de antes, muy triste, muy pesada. MP: ¿Cuántos hermanos tuvo? MM: Fuimos siete, siete hermanos, de siete ya nomás dos quedamos. MP: Ándele. Usted cuando estaba niño, ¿qué hacía?, ¿iba a la escuela, trabajaba, jugaba, qué hacía? MM: Pues no, pues sabe que mi papá todo el tiempo nos tuvo en un rancho. Que una hacienda y no había escuela ahí, puro, puro trabajar él. Y nosotros, pos de niños, ¿pos qué? De niños, pues puro jugar, es lo que hacíanos. Hasta que ya nos hicimos hombres, entonces ya empezamos a ayudarles a ellos, a hacer la vida. MP: ¿A qué jugaban? MM: Uh, pos jugábamos a las escondidas, a las escondidas, a la pelota. (risas) MP: Y así se pasó su niñez. MM: ¿Mande? MP: Así pasó la niñez. MM: Así pasé la niñez, sí señorita, en un rancho. MP: Qué bueno. Y ya a la edad, ¿a qué edad empezó a trabajar? MM: A la edad de diecisiete años, ya de quince años empecé a trabajar ya. MP: Ahí, ¿ayudándole a su papá?, o, ¿cómo? MM: Ayudarle a mi jefe, ayudarle a mi jefe en la labor. MP: Y en cuanto al Programa Bracero, ¿cómo se dio cuenta del Programa Bracero? MM: No, porque, pos ya ve que hay programas para eso pal, de bracero, que está saliendo la gente de bracero. Entonces ya aquí el presidente, fuimos con el presidente y ya nos dio una carta que arreglaba. Entonces nos fuimos a Chihuahua, y ahí duramos como unos dos días para salir. Ahí salimos, nos echaron en el tren y fuimos a dar a Juárez en la madrugada. Y luego otro día, ya nos arrimamos allá a El Paso, nos arrimaron allá a El Paso y pos, bañarnos de polvo, nos bañaron de polvo. Y luego de ahí nos embarcaron pa, pal Río Vista. Ahí en el Río Vista, ahí llegamos y ya nos dieron de que comer y luego estuvimos dos días ahí, hasta que jueron los patrones a contratarnos y ya nos contratamos. No, pos a mí me tocó aquí en Las Cruces, Nuevo México. Ahí nos tocó el primer año que jue el [19]59. Que por cierto que aquí traigo una, mire, esta es la cartilla que traigo, mire. MP: Ah, ¿esta es su identificación? MM: Sí. MP: ¿Su mica? MM: Mi mica, sí. MP: Muy bien. Y entonces ya con esta mica, ¿se las daban ahí en Río Vista, les daban esta mica?, o, ¿dónde les daban esta mica? MM: Pos ésta mica nos la daban aquí en El Paso ya cuando nos vinieron a entregar. Ya cuando el patrón nos entregó, entonces nos dieron esa mica ahí con los, ¿sí sabe dónde? MP: Entonces, a ver, otra vez en el proceso. Entonces primero, ya que tenían la carta del municipio, del presidente municipal, ¿se fueron a Chihuahua? MM: Sí, nos juimos Chihuahua, sí. MP: Y luego ahí, ¿qué tuvieron que hacer?, o, ¿los examinaron? MM: Pos primero son los papeles, primero son los papeles y entonces ya llevábanos los contratos ya, listos ya. Ya llevábamos los contratos listos. MP: ¿Qué edad tenía usted? MM: Tenía veintisiete años. MP: ¿Veintisiete años? MM: Sí. MP: Okay. MM: A esta edad, fíjese. (risas) MP: Sí. (risas) Y ahí en Chihuahua, fue en El Trocadero, ¿verdad? MM: Sí. MP: Ahí, ¿cómo era El Trocadero? ¿Era una oficina, o era así nada más el campo? MM: No, era, era oficina. MP: Y dice que se tardó dos días. MM: Sí. MP: ¿Por qué? MM: Porque era mucha gente, mucha gente había. Había, pobrecita gente que no tenían qué comer y comía, salían a los tambos de la basura a sacar pedazos de plátano. MP: Ah, ¿sí? MM: Toda la gente del sur. Todavía nosotros no porque estábanos aquí cerca. No crea, sufrimos munchos. MP: Y toda esa gente, ¿en dónde dormía?, ¿se quedaba a dormir ahí en la tierra? MM: Pos mucha gente se quedaba a dormir allí. Nosotros ya salimos de aquí, ya nos echó el presidente de aquí, ya cuando le dijeron que se llevara a la gente. Todavía duramos, todavía esa noche ahí, hasta otro día como a las tres de la tarde salimos pa Juárez. MP: Y ahí en El Trocadero, ¿había gente por parte del Gobierno Americano? MM: Sí, sí había. MP: Y, ¿eran oficiales de la aduana? MM: Sí, pos eran oficiales de la aduana, sí. MP: ¿Sí? MM: Sí, había, había de los dos. Había de los dos. MP: Y ellos, ¿qué le preguntaban? MM: Pos no, a nosotros no nos preguntaban nada. Allá los jefes son los que, nosotros nos, nomás firmábamos los papeles y listo pa la hora que nos dijeran: “A tales horas van a salir”. Sin lonche y sin nada. MP: Y luego, ¿cuánto hacían desde Chihuahua a Juárez? MM: ¿Mande? MP: ¿Cuánto hacían de Chihuahua a Juárez? MM: Pos salimos como a las, como a las tres de la tarde y llegamos como en aquello de la madrugada a Juárez. MP: ¡Mucho tiempo! MM: ¡Mucho tiempo! MP: Y sin lonche ni nada. MM: Sin nada. MP: Y luego, ya cuando llegaban a Juárez, ¿ahí los llevaban a un lugar para que durmieran? MM: Nada. Ahí nos estuvimos parados, sentados, en un lugar ahí cerca de, de ahí de El Paso. Hasta que aclaró, amaneció, tonces ya nos arrimaron y nos… En fila y entonces ya salieron unas gentes y nos echaron polvo a cada uno, pos nos bañaron de polvo. Entonces, ya allí, terminaron, y entonces ya nos embarcaron pal Río Vista. MP: Y, ahí donde los empolvaban, ¿los pasaban a un cuarto? MM: No, no, así, así, como llegaban, así. MP: ¿Así en la mera calle? MM: Así nomás. MP: Y, ¿ahí tenían que presentar ustedes alguna identificación? MM: Sí, ahí. MP: ¿O qué presentaban para cruzar? MM: Ahí. MP: Y de ahí del puente en El Paso para Río Vista, ¿en qué se los llevaban? MM: En un camión, en camión nos llevaron. MP: ¿Así todos empolvados como dijo? MM: Todos empolvados. (risas) Hasta que no llegamos al Río Vista que ya nos bañamos, entonces sí. MP: ¿Se podían bañar en Río Vista?, ¿tenían regaderas? MM: ¿Mande? MP: ¿En Río Vista tenían regaderas, tenía baños? MM: Sí, tenían regaderas. Sí, tenían regaderas, tienen sus baños ahí. MP: Platíqueme de Río Vista, cuando llegaban, ¿qué era todo lo que hacían hasta que se iban con el ranchero? MM: Uh, pos… MP: Platíqueme todo eso. MM: Era un montón de gente la que había. MP: ¿Mucha otra vez? MM: Mucha, cada, cada hora llegaban camiones de distintas partes. Era un corralón grande y se llenaba, se llenaba de gente. Ya al otro día empezaban a nombrar, a salir camiones pa tales partes. Unos pa otras partes, otros pa otro y otros pa otro, así de que puro sufrir. MP: Y ahí cuando llegó a Río Vista, ¿a dónde fue primero, a chequeos médicos, con las secretarias para que llenaran formas?, o, ¿qué fue lo primero que hizo? MM: No, pues ahí nos tenían nombrando. Y ahí ya nos dieron los, los estas pa los patrones. Ya luego ya de ahí salíamos, ya a donde íbanos con los patrones, a trabajar con los patrones. MP: Pero ahí los volvían a checar, ¿no?, del cuerpo. MM: Sí, nos checaron, nos pusieron los rayos X en la espalda, corazón, todo. Claro que sí. MP: Si alguien estaba mal, ¿qué pasaba con la persona que estaba medio…? MM: Pos no, decían que no lo dejaban pasar. Como unas tres, bueno, en esa parte que yo estuve, esa vez salieron como unas tres personas malas de los pulmones. Pos ahí salieron los pobrecitos, ahí los ayudamos con los $10, los $20 cada uno, pa que se fueran pa su tierra otra vez. MP: ¿Por qué?, ¿ya de regreso nadie les pagaba el pasaje? MM: Naiden, naiden les pagaba el pasaje. Ellos solitos se tenían que salirse, buscar su vida. MP: Platíqueme más ahí del Río Vista, ¿cuántos días pasó ahí? MM: ¿Mande? MP: En Río Vista, ¿cuántos días estuvo? MM: No, pos nos tenían de como, como hoy llegamos como a las tres de la tarde, y otro día, hasta otro día no salimos. MP: Y, ¿ahí les daban de comer en Río Vista? MM: ¿Mande? MP: En Río Vista, ¿podían comer ustedes? MM: Sí, ahí nos dieron comida, sí. MP: ¿Sí? MM: Sí, ahí nos dieron cena y luego nos dieron almuerzo. Y luego al otro día nos dieron otra vez almuerzo y comida. Y ya en la tarde, ya nos echaron pa fuera a cada quien, a cada, a según el patrón que número de gente que sacaba cada patrón. MP: Y ahí, ¿ahora sí tuvo un lugar donde dormir, ahí en Río Vista? MM: Sí, este… MP: ¿Bajo techo? MM: En el suelo. MP: ¿En el suelo? MM: Sí. MP: Y, ¿les daban cuando menos alguna cobija o algo? MM: Pos una cobija nos daban, nomás. Porque ahí, ahí no había camas. Ahí no había nada, puros cuartos ahí solos. Las cobijas ahí había porque nosotros las llevábanos. Llevábanos una cobijita, así sencillita. MP: ¿O sea que ustedes sí podían llevar ropa, cobijas, alguna navaja o algo?, ¿sí les permitían llevar cosas con ustedes? MM: No, de eso nada. Nos esculcaban todo, no podíamos llevar nada. MP: ¿No?, ¿nada? MM: Nada. MP: Ah, qué raro. (gallo cantando) Y entonces ahí ya llegaba el ranchero, ¿verdad?, por ustedes. MM: Sí, llegaba el ranchero. MP: Y si a ustedes no les gustaba el ranchero, ¿podían esperarse hasta el próximo o tenían que irse a fuerzas? MM: No, ya diciendo el patrón: “Necesito tanta gente pa tal parte”. Entonces ya el patrón nos escogía. “Tantos, necesito tanta gente”. De ahí salimos como unos, como unos veinte salimos de ahí a Las Cruces, Nuevo México. MP: ¿A Las Cruces? Y luego… MM: Una parte que le nombran Alto Blanco, ¿Alto Blanco se llama? De aquel lado de El Paso. MP: Sí. MM: Más acá de, más acá de Las Cruces, en esa parte estuvimos trabajando. Y luego ya cuando nos entregaron, juimos a, nos llevaron hasta Las Cruces, Nuevo México. Ahí nos estuvimos en una placita ahí hasta que ya los patrones nos entregarían, no sé qué harían con nosotros. Entonces ya nos, de ahí nos dieron un vasito así con unos jugos y unas naranjas, unas manzanas a cada uno y de ahí nos subimos al camión hasta Juárez, otra vez. MP: ¿Ya de regreso cuando habían terminado su contrato? MM: Ya cuando, ya de regreso. MP: Cuando llegó ahí a Río Vista y vio toda esa inmensidad de gente, ¿qué fue lo que pensó usted? MM: No, pos ya sabíamos nosotros que teníamos que… Como ahí se juntaba la gente, teníanos que, ahí teníanos que… Ya sabíamos que ahí los patrones, tenían que decir: “Yo necesito tanta gente.” MP: Ay perdón. A ver, yo se lo pongo. Ahí está ya listo. MM: “Yo necesito tanta gente, pa tal parte”, y de ahí salían. Tenían unos camiones, (gallo cantando) unos camiones salían pa otras partes y otros pa otras y otros pa otras. Y el segundo año, la segunda vez que jui, esa me tocó también, esa vez ya me tocó en Pecos, que jue… MP: ¿En qué año fue en Pecos? MM: Jue el [19]62, el [19]62 salí otra vez pa Pecos. También llegamos allá y ya nos llevó el patrón al rancho. Como a unas treinta millas de Pecos para allá. Llegamos a una barraca grande, íbamos como unos cien hombres. MP: ¿En una barraca? MM: Sí. MP: Y luego, ¿cómo le hacían para…? ¿Pues cómo se acomodaban cien hombres ahí? MM: No, pues cada quien, había catres de tres pisos, uno de abajo, otro en medio y otro de arriba. MP: Eran muchas personas en un solo lugar. MM: Sí, éramos como unos cincuenta, sesenta hombres. MP: Era época de calor, me imagino, ¿no? MM: Eh, ¿mande? MP: ¿Era época de calor? MM: Sí. MP: Y, ¿cómo soportaban todo el calor ahí con tanta gente? MM: No, pos había muchas ventanas. Taba, había muchas ventanitas así como estas. Y la verdad taba muy grande, cabía mucha gente. Taban las, taban los comedores así, así por en medio así enseguida estábanos, dormíanos nosotros, un lado y otro. MP: O sea que, ¿ahí mismo estaban las mesas donde ustedes comían? MM: Sí, ahí mismo taban las estufas así, corrían las estufas así, y ahí mismo unos hacían comida pa otros lados y otros hacía para este otro lado. MP: Y, ¿nunca tuvieron problema que agarraran la comida, que les quitaran la comida o algo? MM: Pos no, pos fíjese que nosotros no nos quejábamos. ¿Pa qué vamos a decir? No nos quejamos. ¿Sabe de qué sí nos quejamos? Que allá la gente es muy cochina. MP: Ah, ¿sí? ¿Cómo? A ver, platíqueme por qué. MM: Cochina porque les apest[an], les olía mucho los pieses. Y por eso muchas veces no comíanos nosotros y como estábanos así uno detrás de otro. Y ésa gente muy cochina, muy sucia. Fue mucha gente del sur, gente muy cochina. Alhí había de todo, había gente de distintas partes. MP: ¿Cuáles eran los más problemáticos? MM: ¿De qué? MP: Sí, los que, los braceros que eran así como que más peleoneros o más inconformes, ¿de dónde eran, del sur? MM: Eran de Zacatecas y del sur. Eran muy, gente muy cochina para, pa todo. MP: Ahí en Las Cruces, ¿estuvo trabajando en campos de algodón? MM: Puro algodón. Una que otra vez nos sacaban así al tomate, una que otra vez. MP: Platíqueme cómo era un día de trabajo allá en Las Cruces. MM: ¿Mande? MP: Platíqueme, ¿cómo era un día de trabajo en Las Cruces? (gallo cantando) Desde que se levantaba, ¿qué hacían?, hasta que se iban a dormir. MM: Pos puro piscar. MP: ¿Puro piscar? MM: Puro piscar algodón. MP: ¿Cuánto les pagaban? MM: Nos pagaban a $1.55 la libra. Mucho dinero, ¿verdad? (risas) Las cien libras. MP: ¿Tan poquito? MM: Sí, señor. MP: Era muy poquito dinero. MM: Muy poquito dinero. MP: ¿Cuánto sacaba más o menos a la semana? MM: Pos sacábanos, ¿qué? Pos $200, $250, $300 era lo más que sacábamos. Y luego de ahí todavía nos quitaban pal seguro, fíjese. MP: Y entonces, ¿cuánto les venían dando? MM: Pos no, pos en ese entonces, pos ya casi ya no me acuerdo. Pos, estaba todo, todavía estaba el dólar muy bajo. Ya ve, estaba muy barato, estaba el dólar. MP: Sí, estaba muy barato. MM: Pos pa decirle al último, que ya cuando nosotros, ya cuando terminamos los contratos pos para mí, haga de cuenta que estaba aquí en México. MP: ¿Por qué, oiga? MM: Porque pos venimos iguales. MP: ¿Sí? MM: Sí. MP: O sea que no, todo el dinero… MM: No, nos remediamos nosotros nada de eso. MP: ¿No? MM: No, no nos remediamos, nada. Muy trabajados, sí, porque desde que salíamos de la casa desde las siete de la mañana, hasta casi oscurecer para a ver qué hacíamos, pos sacábamos lo mismo. Y cuando estuvimos aquí en Pecos, los primeros días nos anduvimos agarrando buenos algodones, ya como a las tres semanas ya nos metieron las máquinas, y lo que iba dejando las máquinas, íbamos nosotros levantando, ¿qué íbamos a…? Puras hebras, ¿se imagina? MP: O sea que pesaba menos. MM: Pesaba menos. Y luego este, y agarraba menos, pos lo que la máquinas dejaban, pues dejaban puro algodón así entre las matas, así todo desparpajado. MP: O sea que era menos el peso, era más el trabajo. MM: Era más el trabajo y menos, menos el peso, menos el peso. Y menos, menos algodón que nosotros sacábamos. Sacábamos muy poco algodón y el precio igual. MP: Y entonces, platíqueme, ¿no tuvo usted ningún problema en cuanto al pago?, ¿siempre le pagaban lo que era justo? MM: Sí, no, en cuanto al pago, sí. No, no tuvimos, ¿problemas pa qué vamos a decir? No tuvimos problemas. MP: Y ese dinero que les quitaban, ¿ustedes sabían?, ¿el patrón les había dicho que les iba a quitar tanto? O ¿cómo se daban cuenta ustedes que les quitaban? MM: Porque ahí entre unos con otros nos dábanos cuenta que el patrón nos quitaba creo que el diez o el veinte , me parece, nos quitaban. MP: Y ustedes, ¿nunca supieron a dónde iba ese dinero? MM: No, no, nosotros nunca supimos. MP: ¿No?, ¿nunca? MM: No, precisamente es lo que estamos peleando. (risas) MP: Así es. MM: ¿Qué se hizo ese dinero? (risas) Es lo que estamos nosotros peleando. Que nos pagaban muy poco y ese dinero, pos ellos se quedaron con él, cuestión del seguro. MP: A propósito del seguro, cuando ustedes se enfermaban, ¿qué hacían?, ¿tomaban ustedes algo por su cuenta?, ¿los llevaban al hospital? MM: Pos fíjese que nosotros, a lo menos que por mí, yo nomás una vez estuve, tuve malo del resfrío. Pero, pero un resfrío así pasajero, ahí con pastillas y con limones me la pasé, un día o dos, nomás. Pero el patrón no me las pagó, no me las pagó tampoco. MP: ¿No? MM: No. Esa vez, esa vez perdí dos días yo. El patrón no me los reconoció. MP: Ah, bueno, pues estuvo enfermo, ¿verdad? Por eso no, ni fue a trabajar, ni nada. Y entonces, ¿cómo le hacían para pagar ustedes sus comidas, por ejemplo, o el mandado? MM: Pos con lo poquito que nos daban, que ganábanos, comprábanos, nos hacíanos un grupo de cuatro o cinco pa comprar el mandadito pa la semana.
