<text>It took some time to earn an M.A. in English. Forty-five years, maybe – if you’ll accept that my education started as a dream, of my dad, well before I was born.

In my wallet I carry a black and white photograph of us. The snapshot, taken after a rain, captures a dreary day in Castanos, Coahuila, Mejico, 1952. As I stand on a table of rough wood, wearing a baggy diaper, our white adobe home behind us, the picture speaks to me of his vision.

In 1945, encouraged by the Mexico-U.S. Bracero Program, dad left home to change our lives. It would not be easy. Trials awaited him. In his first test, needing a Mexican labor contractor to hire him, my dad failed. The enganchador judged his hands too soft for the needs of American farmers.

This did not deter him. Despite the dangers, without knowing English, he pursued his vision anyway. Sixteen years later, on a snowy February 22, 1960, in a letter signed by former U.S. Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen, America officially greeted Ireneo Gomez Saldana.

In our photo, as he stands behind me, his right hand cupping my waist, I see my dad in the maturity of his manhood. He is lean. He is strong. In his wry, diminutive smile I see the joy he would’ve expressed had he lived to know I graduated.

He valued education.

He built our lives on it.

I recall one wintry night, in Chicago, how my mother nervously thread about him. Occasionally she wrung her hands. My three sisters, older and smarter than me, remained in their room – as my dad, quietly weeping at our dining room table, tried to still his fears.

Propped on elbows, his head held in his hands, my dad stared at a book lying open before him. It was a trade manual. The first of many that he would need to study, the book was part of a correspondence course on radio and television repair. Injured, having lost his job as a punch press operator with the Burton-Dixie Corporation, my dad sought a new job.

I asked my mother why he cried.

She said he couldn’t read English.

It’s the only time I ever saw him weep.

On December 11, 1990, while sitting on the steps of Flowers Hall at Southwest Texas State University, on a rosy winter day I celebrated my graduation with him.

I looked at our photo.

In the way that he holds me – facing out, as if presenting me to the future – I couldn’t help wonder if he wasn’t showing me to myself, suspecting, perhaps, that I’d see this moment one day, and I would recognize just how much he had laid out for me.

I do.

I did.

As I gazed across the campus, knowing that I’d benefited from his dream, the university’s tower clock happened to toll. It was three. And it was special. In the bells’ resonance – traveling across space and time, I imagined – I believed that he heard the same victorious chime. And it felt good. I understood what he'd given me. I’d inherited an American story.

<text>Unfortunately my dad, who was a bracero during 1958-63, does not have any proof or evidence that he was actually a bracero worker back then. My dad recalls that after he became a legal US resident one time he was traveling from Tamaulipas to Houston, an immigration agent from the border in Hidalgo saw his bracero ID card in my dad’s wallet and kindly asked if he could have it for his personal collection purposes, so my dad gave him his card (I still cant believe my dad did this). My dad says the agent convinced him by saying he would never need it since the program was over and he was now a legal resident. He never knew the name of this agent. Now my dad has no other way to prove his background as bracero since he never imagined he would sometime in his life need his id, check stubs or contracts from these companies that were enrolled in the bracero programs back then. He can’t recall the names of the companies he worked for since he would work for a company for a month and then work for another one the next month and since the companies names were in English it would be more difficult for him to remember the names. My Dad is currently living in Houston Texas. If you have a family member who had his bracero id card collected by an Hidalgo border agent perhaps together we can investigate about this person or testify about this as a group. Does anyone out there knows anything about immigration agents who got these bracero id cards for personal collection purposes please contact me at tamu50@hotmail.com.. Is there a place here in texas or in mexico that perhaps has records of all these bracero people who worked in the US back then?

Until they noticed him and made him get back in line with the other men.He questioned them and they said that all the short men were going to pick lettus,celery,strawberies...and that the taller men were going to pick lemons,ornges...he was 6ft tall.By the time he came to California he was known as a hard worker and was asked to return to work in the US when his contract expired. He was sponcered to come here and work by his boss.He got his Green card, and later his US citizenship. He sent for his family, all seven of us in 1965.He used to say "I don't have alot of mony to leave you, but what I do leave you is a land where you can do or be anything you want".We all made good in the United States and are thankful to our Mom and Dad for bringing us to this land of oppertunity.Thank You Dad. <text>RE: the Bracero History Archive:

I am Refugio I. Rochin, Professor Emeritus of UC Davis and Santa Cruz and native of San Diego County. I was born in May 1941 and worked with my father who was under contract to provide Bracero Labor camps with food and related provisions from 1941 through 1964, the year the program ended.

I believe that little has been written about the relationships developed between Bracero hosting corporations and U.S. service providers, especially Hispanics (Mexican-Americans) in business. I am writing to make sure that the Bracero story is told in terms of its spin-offs, corporate ties and the impact of Bracero contracts in San Diego county.

For example, Sunkist and avocado growers (also called associations) developed camps and facilities for Bracero workers in San Diego county to live in during the time they harvested and processed vegetables, avocados, oranges and lemons.

The camps they developed would hold (by my recollection) 25 to 300 workers each. Relatively large camps were located in Fallbrook, Vista and Escondido California. Each camp was built of wood and appeared to be modeled like US military barracks. The workers (all men) slept in bunk-beds, closely lined with boxes for each for personal items.

Workers used open showers and did their laundry - much like soldiers of their day. Workers ate together in "mess-halls." They used metal trays for food and regular glasses for drinks. The quality of food varied by camp, cooks and staples provided by the companies. Camps that specialized in "Mexican food" kept their workers content. Camps that did not serve Mexican food experienced some protests and worker flight.

I know this from personal experience. My father was one of the first contractors in San Diego county who worked successfully for Sunkist growers, serving Mexican food with fresh tortillas, lots of beans and rice and meat. The camps served by my father often had workers from other camps seeking "sanctuary" at the Sunkist camps.

My father developed a wholesale business called C&R Provisions in Oceanside. He learned from personal experience as an immigrant farmworker (beginning at 15 years of age) the importance of home cooking and service.

The 'C' in C&R stood for Castorena (Manuel) and the 'R' for Rochin (Refugio).

Manuel Castorena (Spanish origin) was my fathers friend and our neighbor. He became the first mayor of Carlsbad California - also the founder of Carlsbad's acclaimed school for gems.

Refugio Rochin (my father - born in Sinaloa Mexico in 1908) was a wholesaler of Mexican produce and owner of Mexican grocery stores and restaurants. Through the restaurants he befriended (mostly through the Rotary Club) some of Sunkist's executives. One, in particular, Roy Workman, who was married to a Mexican, was responsible for contract workers. Roy liked my dad and handled my dad's special contracts with Sunkist.

Together, C&R and Sunkist developed contracts to feed workers at Sunkist labor camps. C&R Provisions also picked up several other farm labor camps in San Diego county.

The business relationship led to C&R becoming a successful operation, supplying Mexican food and related supplies (e.g corn husks for tamales, spices, tortilla presses) in the region.

I can relate more since I started working with my father in C&R from the time I was 10 years old. I was born in May 1941. When I was 16 - 1957 - I had my own delivery route and went to camps in Fallbrook, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.

I also delivered to my father's close friend - actor Leo Carrillo. He purchased my fathers' specially aged prime rib and Mexican food for his parties and friends - some I met were old time movie stars, Conrad Hilton, and corporate executives. At the time, Leo was always in the Rose Parade and rode his beautiful gold stallions, all dressed with silver saddle, etc. For verification, contact: Gerry Streff. Visit:
www.carrillo-ranch.org

Leo Carrillo was referred to as Mr Republican. My father was a Republican and my mother a Democrat - mostly because of social ties, not because of political agendas.

The Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University published booklet that my mother wrote, covering aspects of the Rochin business and bracero program. It lends credence to my account above. It also shows the affect of my father's work and friends in her life. She provides another perspective of the Mexican business community, beginning with her birth in 1913 in Colton California.

Let me know if you have questions or interest in other Bracero related work. I can relate, for example, how la migra (US border patrol) raided our restaurant and harassed our Mexican workers - legal or not. This story continues today.

<text>Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: Vance E. Beasley was born on March 11, 1916, in Heber Springs, Arkansas; in 1927, his family moved to Heth, Arkansas; he was the third eldest of his six siblings, four brothers and two sisters; with the exception of one of his sisters, the rest of his siblings passed away; he was educated in public schools, but he often went in late and left early in order to help with the crops; in 1939, he graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in agriculture; soon after he married, and he and his wife had three children; he later went on to help his father and brother with their farming partnership, CJ Beasley and Sons.

Summary of Interview: Mr. Beasley describes his family and what his life was like growing up; he also talks about his wife and children; during the midfifties, his father asked him to help with the family farm and the partnership of CJ Beasley and Sons; the dwindling labor supply led to their hiring of braceros, particularly for help with cotton, their primary crop; they took on thirty-five to forty braceros per season, and they stayed for contracts of roughly two and a half months; the farmers were required to provide basic necessities such as housing, bedding and cooking supplies; in addition, the braceros were given picking sacks, which were roughly seven feet long and could hold up to one hundred pounds; there was always at least one man in the group of braceros who spoke English and served as a leader; he would receive pay for all the workers and distribute it accordingly; he was also responsible for helping the men buy groceries; Vance repeatedly mentions the incredible work ethic of the braceros; they picked cotton better than any other workers; in fact, he mentions an instance in which he hired workers from Memphis, Tennessee, but they drank too much and did not pick the row of cotton as clean as the braceros did; he found it easier to pay them to leave; eventually, mechanization took over and eliminated the need for manual labor, which in his opinion, ultimately led to the end of the bracero program.

How might he have compared different locations? How might he have responded emotionally to the migratory nature of his work?<br />• For students with background knowledge on the bracero program, Judge whether Juan was better off working as a bracero in America or staying in his homeland.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="../../../TraceRouteBracero.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Download this activity guide</a></text>
